STORM BERT - Escaping South in our Motorhome Florrie

- Hello guys,
A couple of days we don't want to have to experience again.
We were up in Keswick - it was our last night on the CCC Derwentwater site, before we travelled South.
The forecast wasn't great - Storm Bert would bring high winds and rain to the Midlands and the South, and Sleet and Snow to the North of England and Scotland.
As we awoke the next day, the forecast had changed to rain for our area and Snow for Scotland.
There was no Snow on the ground in Keswick, so we decided to make our journey as planned.
But as we travelled East along the A66 towards the M6, conditions worsened quickly and Snow had settled on the roads. The Snow Ploughs were out and then they announced that A66 across to Northumberland had been closed.
Our journey down towards the Howgill Fells was bad, but once through them, temperatures rose dramatically and the Sleet and Snow turned to rain.
We had planned to cut our journey home if conditions were bad, and so we headed in to a lovely little CL, The Lodge which is North of Newcastle Under Lyme. And found a great little pub for a beer to help us relax.
Next morning, Storm Bert had intensified in that the wind had risen and we still had torrential rain!
So our journey home was as difficult as the day before.
The van was buffeted by high winds, but stood up admirably and the semi air suspension that we have had fitted meant that the impact of wind was reduced.
When we finally arrived back at our storage yard, we couldn't gain access as a roof had blow off one of the sheds and Florrie had to spend the night outside.
With hindsight, we would not have travelled until the Storm had abated, but with the weather forecast that we had on day one, it had appeared that the journey would be ok.
Hope you enjoy this one guys,
Dave & Sue

I don't envy you that journey Dave! I agree with you on the standard of driving. The ones that get me are those that fly by you and you can see they are going faster than the car in front of them. They wait until they are right behind and brake! I will never understand it. Like you, I keep out of the way :). I can only imagine what Bert would have been like without the air suspension. It's on my list! We are out next weekend, only 6 miles away to check out Matilda 2.0 then out for Christmas up in Gosforth, near Seascale. Loving the new van so far and happy to join the Adamo gang :). Ian
That will be great Ian - good luck on the first time out. You have the advantage on us as it is our first van. We had no idea what we were doing but had to learn fast! 😃
The air suspension is a game changer - the van is so much more stable in wind and when the lorry vacuum sucks you in on a motorway. Glide Rite are a really great bunch and highly recommend them.
The Adamo group has so much info. - a guy called Stephen Piggott set up the Adamo23 YT channel and there is some useful stuff on there.
Have a great rest of your weekend. 👍👍
@@NBNatureTrailvan Week we only had the first Matilda for a year and boy did we learn a lot! still lots to learn though :). Thanks for the heads up on the Adamo 23 channel. I have subbed.
That was bonkers Dave. Glad you both arrived safely 🙏🏻❤️
Cheers mate. Yes it was a bit crazy. In hindsight we should have stayed put!!
The van got buffeted on day two but at least it didn’t Snow on that day. Have a good week ahead Phil.
What an adventure
Thanks for sharing 😃👍Like 39
Thanks very much. It was definitely an adventure!!
Have a great week ahead. 👍👍👍
@@NBNatureTrailvan 😃👍
Glad you didn't let the storm stop your travels! Looking forward to hearing about your Spain trip 😊
Hi David.
We probably should she stayed out but the forecast was for a big improvement - it just didn’t happen fast enough!
We’re really looking forward to getting back across into Europe. Planning near enough done now - just the wait!
Hope you’re having a good week 👍👍
That was quite a storm, wow! Yikes, I wouldn't want to be driving a Motorhome in the snow. Nice that the rain let up enough for you to get out for a walk and dinner! :) Cheers, Jen
Thanks Jen. No it wasn’t much fun. But in the end I didn’t last two long. Weird weather. The temperature rose about six degrees in 45 minutes. I suppose that’s the impact of the front moving fast!! The second day seemed worse with the winds even stronger so we did get buffeted about but all safe in the end. 👍
Hello Dave and Sue, goodness me what a storm you were in, loved the poncho Dave. It didn't look a very pleasant journey all weathers as you drove. Looked a lovely CL such a shame with the weather, you certainly deserved the drink in the pub. Glad you were save in the storm, take care , Julie and Tony x
Oh gosh, yes we probably should have stayed put but the forecast was for improvement and rain not Snow! The temps rose 5 degrees by the time we got to Lancaster so maybe we should have left later. But alls well that ends well and we got safely to that little CL.
The poncho was great. 😃😃. And it cheered the warden up too 🤣🤣
Hope you two are doing well. 👍👍👍
@ yes we aren’t too bad had the Covid vaccine this week and we were ill for 2 days🤷 okish now. Been busy with our granddaughter lots of Christmas events happening. Take care xx
oh no. 😨. I had both vaccines and it wasn’t too bad. I wasn’t sure about the Covid one but went for it in the end. Sue won’t have it as it made her really ill too years back! We’ve all been Ill for two weeks with a rubbish lurgy. So much going around isn’t there!
Stay safe and well and enjoy all the Christmas preparations 👍👍🎅
It was a crazy storm and we got a littel bit of it over here. 😊
It was Soren. We should prob may have stayed put in hindsight! But the forecast was for rising temperatures and no Snow!!
Anyway, all safe and sound - in fact the second day was the worst as the winds were much stronger!!
Yes what a scary journey! What the videos can never portray is impact of the twitches of the van on motorways when hit by gusts or quickly overtaking lorries etc. Really scary and of course the bodily reaction to the sudden van movements!! Agree about the lunacy of some of those car and lorry drivers in those conditions. Take care
It was pretty crazy Robin. In hindsight we should have stayed put. But the forecast didn’t seem that bad - the temps just a bit further South of the Lakes were much higher.
Some of the driving was just mad. Cars on the outside lane on the M6 which hadn’t been ploughed 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️.
The van performed admirably throughout. A fair bit of buffeting on the first day but it was the second day towards home which was the worst of the wind. The semi air suspension makes such a huge difference - really helps to stop the wobbles! V
Safe trip this week you guys. 👍👍👍
That looks like some of the toughest travel I have seen you on. It the mercy of the weather always makes travel stressful. Have a great week Dave and Sue.
Hi mate. With hindsight we should have stayed put! It wasn’t fun. The second days journey was even worse as the winds were stronger. But in the end home safe.
Hope you’re doing well Duane - missing your vlogs.
Well done for making that look easy , it's bad enough in a car , let alone a high sided vehicle, but so nice to see the motorway so quiet, looking forward to the next vlog , loving the ponchos BTW
Ha ha thanks David. At least the poncho cheered the warden up before we left Keswick 😃😃
Yep wasn’t a great two days on the roads - in a way, day 2 nearer home was worse as the winds were much higher and the van did take a buffeting even with the semi air suspension fitted!!
In hindsight, we would have stayed put in Keswick, but the forecast was for weather improving and no Snow.
Anyway, home safe and it was a great two weeks.
Have a lovely Sunday and thanks for your kind comments David. 👍🙏👍🙏
What a dramatic storm! I'm glad you made it back safe and sound! Looking forward to seeing your adventures in the Lake District. I'm currently editing a video of our lake district trip!😊
It’s just our favourite area in England Dara. Love it there. The South Lakes get a bit crazy busy but around Keswick has a real mountain feel about it.
We had a wonderful week with our family although we all went down with a lurgy which we’re still struggling to shake off. 🤦🏻♂️.
Look forward to watching your vids on the Lakes. And hope you two are doing well 👍👍👍
Yes the impact of a Storm when Travelling can be a hard worrying drive.
so glad i dont drive HGV anymore for many reasons.
Love the Puncho, lol.. i gave a cpl to our Post girl the other week when it was raining, she said..`oh i can have them for my festivals` lol.. the drive didnt look great at all.. i always say, no rush, take your time.. i am pleased my Motorbike is off road through winter as a fair weather man..thanks guys.. atb K n S & Rubes
I think if we had known that it would Snow we wouldn’t have attempted to make the drive.
But made it through in the end Kev. Kept it very slow all the way.
The poncho cheered the warden up at least 🤣🤣🤣
Have a lovely Sunday mate.
Wow that sounds like a scary journey! Glad you got home safe, and I hope the shed roof won’t take too long to fix! We were affected by storm Bert too, but nowhere as bad as that!
Oh no. I hope there wasn’t too much damage! It was not a very pleasant trip at all. We probably may should have stayed out but we didn’t think it was going to be as bad as that. The storage facility roof was huge. We couldn’t believe it had been dislodged.
But I think they’ve sorted it now and luckily it didn’t blow completely off and damage all the Motorhomes and Caravans.
Have a lovely Sunday and thanks for watching. 👍
Stay safe guys that Storm looks bad . Love your vlogs keep it up ❤
It was a bit nerve wracking. We probably should have stayed put. Hopefully Spain will be a bit better! 🤞🤞
Cheers John and Zoe 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Nothing like setting up or tearing down in the rain or bad weather. Driving in possible icy conditions is always scary. Look at the snow. WOW! Love your hat. Glad you got to New Castle safely. It's just a muddy mess now. Minnie Pit disaster was so sad. Only 11 survived. Happy holidays.
You too guys yes, it wasn't a fun drive - we probably should have stayed put in hindsight!
And the Minnie Pit was really mind blowing and so dreadfully sad! That was a lovely little site and we will use that again as a stop off when we're travelling North.
Off to Spain in January and can't wait!
Be safe
We’re all fine now thanks Dave.
But that was a bad one
Have a wonderful Sunday Dave 👍👍
We try to avoid packing up in the wet. I try to avoid it at all if I can LOL. Back from a great weekend with the dog.
Pictures looked brilliant mate 👍👍👍
Hi both
Wow - Scary stuff that?....🥺
Glad you came through it unscathed, never mind, I can't imagine it getting any worse than that, so you've got that driving experience under your belt Dave?
It wasn’t a lot of fun Steve! With hindsight, we should have stayed put - but the forecast was for rain not Snow and it was green fields when we left Keswick. But lesson learned!
In a way, day two was the worst - the wind was brutal and the van really got buffeted - even with our semi air suspension.
I think that was definitely our worst journey yet though - in January we had Storm Isha gales, in September it was Storm Boris Snow but then this one was Snow and Gales!! 🤦🏻♂️
Days like that you question why you’re out in Winter 😃😃
Have a lovely week mate.
Wow - Bert was quite the storm and I can imagine you wondered a lot about road safety while driving in those winds and with slippery conditions as well. Thankfully you made it and had no mishap s, but that is not a day where you have to reach something! As for the ponchos they might look silly, but they are very practical. I always pack one when I go on trips. Seeing you walk in the dark, I wonder if you use headlamps and reflector bands for safety? I had to read the poem by Owen and the last part reflects his time, but also Ukraine today I think: The centuries will burn rich loads
With which we groaned,
Whose warmth shall lull their dreaming lids,
While songs are crooned;
But they will not dream of us poor lads,
Left in the ground.
Hopefully you are having a nice weekend and better weather! Take care and be safe! Ant
Cheers Ant.
That Wilfred Owen poem is so poignant and could well reflect Ukraine Ant and that mine memorial was incredibly moving. You could really feel the atmosphere about the place!!
I think that if we had known that there would be Snow we probably wouldn’t have attempted the journey. But in the end I stayed very careful and slow whilst other drivers were behaving crazy!!
The poncho cheered up the campsite warden but I do find it keeps my jacket dry as a bone!!
We do use a headlamp and hi visibility jackets on dark walks. But on this occasion, we only had a track (with no cars) and then a pavement for 150 yards or so.
Believe it or not, the second days driving turned out to be just as challenging as the first as the winds were wild! And a huge roof had blown off at the storage yard so Florrie had to spend the night outside!
Quite a couple of days!!
Anyway thanks for watching again Ant - means a lot.
You have a wonderful Sunday 👍👍👍
You never expect snow on the roads, do you? That's crazy!
It was crazy Dara. The forecast hadn’t said Snow in our area - we were on the A66, which then got closed over the Pennines. We were in 1 degree near Penrith and then 8 degrees at Lancaster, so I suppose it was difficult to forecast exactly where the Snow line would be!
But not a very nice journey in the van!
👍 #34 Good morning Dave and Sue, isn't it super dark when there are no artificial lights around and of course no daylight, lol. You do set off rather early... but beating the rush hour traffic cannot be under-estimated. What a sexy beast you look in the bright yellow poncho, lol. The driving conditions just worsened as you went and were pretty horriffic at times! But aside from the high winds, driving rain, sleet, snow and ice it was absolutely fine! Thankfully the snow melted sharpish and it was just rain from there on in.... what a journey guys.... aww, how sad you were at that site of a pit disaster and 156 lives lost is hard to imagine! trees planted for them is pretty amazing though. I'll look forward to your Spanish trip but admit that I'd rather be going there myself! Thank you as always guys. 👍◕‿◕
Well I though so too about the Poncho - but at least it gave the site warden a good guffaw early on 😃
We probably should have stayed put with hindsight Jane, but the forecast was for rain and not Snow, and the temperature just a few miles SOuth was much higher. But the drive wasn't much fun at all - the Motorhome does get buffted in high winds - which were even worse on Day 2!!
Oh gosh, that pit disaster, I only saw it in the morning - it was just so dreadful! Can't imagine what it was like for that comuunity back then!😨
Spain wasn't appealing much to be honest, but Sue really wanted to do the trip. Strangely, as the weather has worsened over here, the anticipation grows in me too!
Have a lovely Sunday Jane 👍
@@NBNatureTrailvan ... if you are anywhere near Majorca, I would urge you to check out the Albufera Nature Reserve... it is absolutely amazing and I vow to return one day, having been on two separate holidays.
Are you not keen on hot weather then Dave? I was wondering if it is tricky to drive Florrie in high winds too?
Indeed, that community will have been shattered for so long and life would have been difficult for them, plus others would have been at War! We are so lucky to have missed a War... 👍◕‿◕
Hi Jane.
Yes the van is 2.9 metres high, so it’s a struggle in high winds but we have fitted modifications to improve it a bit.
I don’t like too much Sun Jane, but Spain in January seems just about right 👍. Between 16 and 21 ☀️.
We are down there for three weeks travelling there and back through France. I’m quite looking forward to it now!
There’s a nature reserve Parc Natural El Fondo which is walking distance to where we are staying the first week so really looking forward to visiting there 👍👍👍👍
@@NBNatureTrailvan Spain in Jan is a great compromise and I look forward to footage from the Nature Reserve.... it's only next nonth too! 👍◕‿◕
👍 #46 Hi Dave and Sue, blimey, you really are early starters... which is great to beat the traffic but not for me lol. The weather looked truly horrid!!! I see the 'near illuminous banana yellow (be seen be safe lol) sexy poncho is standing up well to the weather and Storm Bert would challenge it's quality for sure! 'the Lodge' looked very homely. It sounds like you had a great 2 weeks in the lakes though, to make up for the horrid weather afte, particularly those last 2 days.... Spain can't come round quick enough eh. A great watch guys and the chatting really helps. 👍◕‿◕
Ha that’s right, Spain can’t come around quickly enough! 😃.
The Poncho cheered the warden up that morning at least 😃😃
We probably should have stayed out Jane, but the forecast was for rain not Snow. And there were green fields around Keswick so we decided to go.
But not a lot of fun driving in that! Our third big storm this year and probably the worst.
Stay safe today Jane. Big one incoming! 😨
Yuck! We drove home from Thanet on Storm Bert weekend. It was horrible. I was shattered when we got home. Constant rain and spray in the dark is not fun... N&Nx
It was dreadful. We just didn’t expect any Snow as it wasn’t forecast. But in the end we made it through but there were drivers in the motorway outside lane even when it was partly covered by Snow. Just crazy!!
Thanks for watching guys and have a lovely Sunday.
Yous have had no luck with storms. Looked grim indeed. Don't like driving in weather warnings maself like. Too many nutters on the roads. Our place went from mental snow to it aw melting in a few hours. Minnie Put disaster. Ye learn something new everyday.
Yep we probably should have stayed put in hindsight Kev. But the forecast was for rain and there were green fields around Keswick. Temps rose by six degrees by Lancaster!
But it really wasn’t fun and wouldn’t want to do it again!
The Minnie Pit was incredible. Standing there in the rain was just very strange - very evocative mate 😨
