  • This is a 10-minute version of the work Grant McCune Design's modelers did to restore the Nostromo from the original "Alien" movie. The Nostromo is now in it's home at the Prop Store of London's LA facility. Check out phases 1 thru 4 for more detailed accounts of each phase of restoration.

Now that it's been found and rebuilt, it should be preserved for all time, somewhere in a museum... Nostromo was / is one of the most important space ship designs in history!! IMHO
Thank God for Grant and team!!

    Wow! Just found this site.
I worked on this production set during my summer holidays. My uncle worked at Bray Studios and got me work with the Alien production team model building and sfx painting. I actually worked on The Nostromo and many other models featured.
Bins full of Airfix model kits broken open and Chloroformed into place. Lighting installation and defuser spray paint effects. Happiest days of my youth.

Fun fact: The Nostormo was originally going to painted yellow, and in fact was, because so much industrial machinery (earth-movers, bulldozers, etc) are yellow. But Scott changed his mind and ordered that the ship be re-painted in greys. I read where when these guys first got hold of what was left of the model, there was still yellow paint visible on parts of it (you can still see some of it in the "before" images in this video).

Even though this wonderful model sat outside for so long, it's refreshing to see modelers who love the art so much to take this weather beaten model and restore it! My second most beloved movie of all-time, Alien has a look and feel that even today stands up and is totally believable. The Nostromo's design will always be one of those that simply got it "right"! Not flashy. Not sleek. But completely functional and industrial. That front-on landing sequence is truly one of cinema's greatest looking shots! I LOVE it!

I remember seeing this restored model at the Prop Store in Valencia, CA. I knew someone who worked there and received a special tour. I had plenty of time to walk around the model and look into the crevices, engines, etc. What a treat after seeing Alien in Hollywood the week it came out. I've been in awe ever since!

This is film is such a work of art, absolutely amazing. Also, the fact that Jerry Goldsmith's absoltely amazingly beautiful, haunting and lullaby like kind of score is such a juxtaposition to the horrific and traumatazing events of the film, I mean, this film is one of a kind.

It's amazing how stupid studios are. They want all the money they can get yet, time & again things like this happen. The original death star had been used as a trash can for years until a fan aquired and restored it. If the studios don't want their old stuff, they could sell it and make a few extra bucks.

Kubrick destroyed nearly all of the 2001 models and props, lest the studio reuse them in lesser productions. I believe only the spherical moon lander still remains, on display in a movie museum in LA.

the ship at the beginning of the movie is the nostromo, the really big thing you see is king of like an oil refinery in space, the nostromo is like a tug boat. so in the movie it detaches from the refinery and goes down to the surface. hope that helps you :)

That, ladies and gentlemen, was still real art in the film industry.
Building sets, making models out of everything you could find.
All of today's computer-animated films simply lack that certain something. when you think of the old Star Trek films or Godzilla. It was always a shame about the models that were blown up, but it looked far more realistic than some of the compact nonsense of today.

The issue I have with the Nostromo is the ship here was nothing more than a landing vehicle that was PART of the Nostromo. When Ripley flies away in the Narcissus, the Nostromo looks like a massive floating refinery because it takes her almost 15-20 seconds of full-thrust to fly from the rear underneath before it explodes. This ship here is but a fraction of that refineries size.
