- Today we tackle glare from glasses in your videos with a few lighting tweaks. Nobody likes to see reflections in glasses!
All lighting videos: • Lighting Videos
Here are a few of the tips mentioned in the video to help remove glare from glasses:
1) Move the light up and over
2) Use a large soft light source
3) If the light needs to be on the side, use some fill to compensate.
Using soft light will also remove/reduce nasty shadows from the frame of glasses. Кино
Finally a filmaker that shows how to deal with REAL problems we face, thanks Caleb! :)
thought exactly the same :) keep it up Caleb! greetings from germany!
Tmk Digital "we face" eye see what you did there!
Thanks TMK!
So true! Thanks Caleb :)
I've been trying for months to try to remove those lights from my glasses--even bought contacts which I couldn't use. Professionals tried to help, and didn't know what you are teaching here on this video! THANKS SO MUCH!! You rock!!
I don't think I've ever finished watching one of your videos and said, "Wow, that was a complete waste of my time." You ALWAYS have usable, real-world content, presented in a no-b.s. style, and you always get right down to it. I've been doing this for nearly four decades, and I always pick up something from your videos. Please keep up the good work!
Thanks man, I'll try this out, I've been recording without my glasses very often, but it just wrecks my vision more and more with time.
Keeping this in my "watch later" playlist for future reference. Lots of great tips!
Thanks David!
I'm 18 months in video and editing. First time I saw your presentation. Well done! You are so practical and your advice will be applied. I will follow your future videos and work through your previous videos. Thank you so much for you and the positive comments. Even from the comments much could be learned. At the age 61 I learn so much from the younger generation - thank you for sharing.
Great video very informative and straight to the point !
I'm so glad to find this video! Last night, my husband needed a headshot for a theatre audition and I'm a new "photographer"...so we had a little fun! I used some tissue paper over a desk lamp to soften the light. I wish I saw this video before shooting, but we still got a great photo that he could submit.
Honestly, sometimes it feels like videography is 80% wrestling reflections and bad shadows while lighting people with glaces. This sums up everything you can do about it perfectly. Thanks a lot and keep going :)
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. I’m going to try these tips today.
Another tiny hack from my experience: clean the glasses. Dirty glasses reflect even more. 🤓
Good idea! thanks for that.
So true, I just had to clean mine after doing a test shot :)
Yes! And make sure you keep your chin down when filming - it's easy to catch the lights even if you raise them up!
There is still no dislikes and 481 likes.. the reason is, he knows what he is talking about, speaks clearly and most of it all, he is not trying to be funny like most other camera and lighting channel guys. Because as a gaffer, I know that most camera people have the driest sense of humor.
Very helpful. Thanks from a glasses-wearing RUclipsr. I tried just not wearing my glasses but I felt way too uncomfortable. I appreciate the acknowledgement that folks who wear glasses will want to keep them on. The solutions are very practical.
Very helpful, especially for us amateurs struggling with lighting for zoom interviews.
What a brilliant, concise, video - really appreciated the 'proof' as you demonstrated the shifting of the light source.
3 years later, this is saving my butt. Caleb is the GOAT.
Another great video Caleb!
Ran in that problem today ! thanks so much for the tips Caleb! I'll use your tips in my next videos. thanks again so much
Caleb, the quality in your videos is amazing. I love the content and it's helping me get started with video shooting!
I really like these lighting videos. It is clear from the quality of your productions that you have a lot of knowledge in this area. Thanks for sharing.
Great video! I have thick glasses and was so frustrated by the shadows by my led lights, now I rig a reflector infront of my LED key light and it's so much better. Love the sunglasses example too, well done.
Your intros are dope, subtle but impressive! What kind of sorcery is that, you make lights disappear! :D
Thanks.
Ps. The old glasses you can´t beleive you wore, suit you :)
Yeah I think he looks better in those glasses, honestly
Thanks for this video! I had this problem too and it was a pain in the neck, especially with chroma keying. I'm definitely going to try your solution out!
As everyone in my house wears glasses this advice is invaluable, thanks dude
Very practical and helpful video, great stuff Caleb!
You can also use a black silk to diffuse the light. It cuts a lot more light but you don’t get that big white reflection.
Was literally wondering about this today so perfect timing. Thanks!
This is great. Thanks man! I've shot a handful of interviews and people with glasses have been a pain.
Very nicely demonstrated!
Thanks Curtis!
Simple... to the point, informative - Excellent~! Thank you Caleb
Caleb, I would love to see a demonstration of light placement by doing a pull-back so that the viewer can see how you change the placement. The drawing is helpful but a pullback would be super-cool. Love your video informational videos. You have great presentation - short and to the point.

Dude, you have so many great videos. This one is no exception.
I really appreciate you making these videos. I know that they are a lot of time and effort to put together. You are appreciated.
Great video! I was wondering about that problem and magically this came up on my recommended.
Bouncing light from underneath to lighten shadows from thick frames is a great tip! Like you mentioned, moving the key light to an extreme angle will require a lot of bounce or fill light.
Thanks Chuck!
Just researching my vlogging set up and this was a concern of mine - great advice, cheers!
Awesome content! Thanks for this quick tip. I do struggle with my glasses and how to deal with it. To me, the worst are the shadows. Reflections are kinda easy to figure out, but shadows... argh! Thanks again!
Thank You for this video. I've been facing the same issues while filming myself with glasses on. I really appreciate these tips. Thanks for the vid and keep content coming.
Thank you!!!
Great tip, Caleb. I'll be using this going forward
Excellent video, solves a serious problem. Thanks!
Hey Caleb,
Great video, thanks for the insights mate. Been having issues with this myself, hadn't thought of angling and using a foamboard to offset the dark-side of the face. Cheers!
This is a great video... I'm looking into lighting options. What are the lighting product(s) that you use? The lighting is great in your video!
Pretty good ideas. I would also add that going one 'stage' further than diffusing the light can sometimes be helpful. Specifically, I am thinking of bouncing off a white ceiling or walls (nothing that is coloured and will give result in a colour cast, of course).
Excellent video! Thanks for posting this info
I have a handful of corporate videos I have to shoot this year, this will definitely help out in the coming weeks. Thanks man!
Thank you for a great content. And done in a way human being could understand, unlike many other videos that you need to be a geek to understand. Thank you
We need more of this!
I wish I could like this more than just once -- What a super great video
Thank you SO much. Just put my screen-casting studio together and needed exactly what you discussed here. Turns out most of the glare in my glasses was just the computer screen in front of my nose. My studio lights were high as well as left and right... and they were fine. I had a second computer monitor just to my right, so I put the windows background default to black and it was not a problem. I really appreciate the help my friend. thanks - Don
I have been there last week with clients, I couldn't do anything about it since I was running out of time with the talent. Thanks for the tip Caled Always useful.
Thanks Hubert!

You do great work. Thank you for another great video.
So direct, useful and practical lesson. Thank you
That was a great idea. Thank you.
Still sun glasses sucks... Especially when it's outdoor. It's really hard to hide even the camera from the sun glass.
You are doing a great job. Waiting for more exciting tips from you.
Outstanding video once again!
Great video. Thanks for putting this together.
Awesome! Finally!!! thanks for this!!!! Bless you!
Great video. Very clear and simple.

Super useful. Thanks Caleb.
An enjoyable and informative precise of the critical issues.
Excellent tips, thank you!
Very handy, I wear big glasses so I definitely needed the tips. Thank you.
You do such a great job, feels like I'm back in film school.
very helpful! Funny this video was suggested under a video I made of me with really bad glare in my glasses. The algorithm is helping you :-)
Been waiting for this one... thank you sir!
No problem! You and many others asked so here we go!
This is great info, man- thank you!
This was helpful, as always! Thanks for your videos! :D
Easiest explanation I found. Thank you!
Brilliant - why didn't I read this before I did an 8 min recording!!! Just moving the lighting ring to the side makes an instant difference.
Great tip. Thanks
Thank you. It gonna be very helpful for my work. Greetings from Brazil.
Nicely done. Thank u!
Do you have any recommendations on where to get a diffuser on a budget?
Brilliant, now I know how to avoid my daughters glasses glare when we record for our channel .... thank you
Thank you for telling me about this as I have this problem and I am a beginner with glasses.
Really helpful video.
Funny. I was doing a video today of myself and had to reshoot because of glare. Fantastic tips.
Great video, helped me VERY much!
Super great video -- I have seen this problem so much in videos.
Very informative, thank you so much!!
I think your old hipster glasses look great on you! Thanks for the tips.
Very helpful tips !
Great video! Two points of improvement: Try to make sure every sentence or instruction makes sense syntactically. Reading back your sentences to yourself will help you recognize it. At 1:29 you say "One thing you can do is just grab you iPhone and point it at the person and kinda move it around - try to find a good angle." I didn't understand this at first - what am I using the iPhone for exactly? (finding a camera angle?) How exactly is this helping me with the task at hand? I would fix the sentence like this: "A trick to figuring out where to place your light is just turn on your iPhone screen, point it at the person (...)" I know it sounds nitpicky but small changes like this just makes the comprehension smooth and 100% foolproof (: the other thing is that you mentioned in the beginning that distance was a thing to think about, but you never got back to it. Thanks for the quality, helpful video!
SUPER helpful. thank you!!
Thank for your video. This video helps me tons!
Thanks Caleb. Great workable solutions from a pro... that instantly upgraded my product.
Amazing tip! Thanks!
Thanks Paulo!
