प्राचीन महाविद्या मंदिर के इतिहास के बारे में जानकारी देते हुए मंदिर के सेवारत पुजारी ने बताया कि महाविद्या माता को भगवान श्रीकृष्ण की कुलदेवी कहा जाता है। कंस के वध से पहले भगवान कृष्ण ने अपनी कुलदेवी की पूजा कर परिक्रमा की थी और उनका आशीर्वाद प्राप्त किया था। जिस दिन कृष्ण ने माता से आशीर्वाद लिया, उस दिन कार्तिक सुधि नवमी का दिन था जिसे अक्षय नवमी के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। कार्तिक सुधि दशमी को भगवान ने कंस का संहार किया। तब से हर साल अक्षय नवमी यानी कार्तिक सुधि नवमी के दिन मंदिर व मथुरा की परिक्रमा का चलन शुरू हुआ।
