    • @LM-dh1ub
      @LM-dh1ub 2 года назад +29

Absolutely. I think Paul was referring to his depiction of what he thought the public thought about them after the split. A lot of interviews Paul has given over the last couple of years seem to be him directing the attention away from his own part in the split, the Yoko element, and stating it all happened because John wanted out. Paul knew how he felt about John, he never doubted that.

I was born Oct. 11, 1980, 40 yrs and 2 days after Lennon. My Dad told me how he sang 'Yesterday' to me in the hospital when I was born. When I came home he would play his Beatles albums so often and never had any issues with me pulling them out to play them. I remember one of the very rare times Yellow Submarine came on the tv to watch, my dad would be telling me about Help! and A Hard Days Night, with all the little jokes in there. How he pointed out to me that Mr. Conductor on Shining Time Station telling the stories about Thomas the Tank was Ringo and my child mind being blown away. I remember him telling me how he enjoyed a lot of their music, but seemed to drift more towards John's, which is what I am as I tended to enjoy to melody and lyrics more. How my Dad would become, solemn when speaking of Lennon and telling me why he was sad. I have only ever seen my Dad cry about four times in my life, that was one of them.
Sadly my Dad passed in 1994, so he can't experience all the Beatles mania of the anthology and everything that's gone on, but I feel like he's around when I listen to them.
My favorite song, which I found out was my Dad's as from his Sister, is "In My Life". I love seeing the newer generations hearing them for the first time and discovering their music.

What a lovely story, thanks for sharing! I also started to listen to my Dad's few Beatles records ever since I was a toddler in the early 70s and I would listen to them regularly for the rest of the decade. Then I rediscovered the band in 1987 as a teen. But my full-blown Beatles "nerdom" didn't start until around 2008 when I was already an adult, hahah. The internet can be blamed for that 😁
I turned fifty a few months ago and The Beatles have been part of my life in some ways for almost that amount of time, half a century - crazy to ponder!

Bit of an unrelated note, but I’m currently reading ‘One Two Three Four: The Beatles in Time’ by Craig Brown, and I can’t recommend it highly enough. While it isn’t super in-depth (though it does run some 600 pages or so) it does do a good job of capturing from various angles the craziness of Beatlemania and the reactions and responses from different parts of society. It even picks up on some forgotten stories: such as the careers of the comedians who were on after The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show and how their supposed big break died a death because of how overshadowed they were, or the drummer who briefly replaced Ringo on a world tour when Ringo was sick, whose career then exploded because the success of temporarily being a Beatle went to his head. It even brings up that Mandela effect thing by recounting how different accounts of John attacking a man at Paul’s birthday party vary wildly - did he use a big stick, or a spade, or nothing at all? How injured was the man? How injured was John?
There are plenty of books out there on the Beatles, but this is definitely one to check out.

In regard to 'Get Back' I opened a thumbnail link to what turned out to be a bizarre channel called 'Mike Williams' Paul Is Dead Channel'. At first I thought it was a parody but it was full-on Beatles conspiracy material. This guy kept calling Paul "Billy" (Billy Shears) and then went into a theory that Peter Jackson was using 'deep fake' technology to create artificial scenes in this documentary. It was completely nuts but strangely compelling. The theories were insane but the fellow was very sober and analytical. There were no skeptics or naysayers in the comments so I got the impression this fellow tolerated no non-believers. There are some very odd people in RUclips. It is going to be mindblowing!
I think it would've been stellar if they'd release two versions, one short for theatrical, just to be in the same place as other hundreds of fans watching it and be hyped up, closest to being at the concert of the Beatles, and another long version for Disney+.
Just an idea regarding them having a great time during the recording is perhaps because as Georgie pointed out when the Beatles had a guest visitor or a session player then they'd forget all the bickering and behave themselves which is great for the documentary but that might've been a different story if there were cameras installed and just themselves alone, similar to Big Brother.

Selfishly, I wish to just have access to all of the footage Peter Jackson had to work with, all the footage that was filmed and the recordings of them that was just audio too... for long listens and viewings that don’t leave out a single thing.
Yes it would be daunting to piece it all together and to market that volume of footage, but you can’t say that you wouldn’t find at least some time at some point to sit through it all, especially if we came to terms with the idea that this documentary is going to be the last official Beatles thing ever made or released.

@@doctorrobert1339 I can forgive Jackson for cropping it. As we've seen from GQ Magazine, and the recent 60 Minutes video with Jackson, the original 4:3 negatives of Get Back footage have very rough scratches on the edges. Presenting it in complete full frame would just look tacky with all those scratches.
I agree the DNR looks very weird, and appears like a poor upscale. It worked better on the WW1 footage imo. I guess Jackson's goal was to make the Beatles footage look like modern shot footage in lower resolution. Personally speaking, a cropped 4:3 frame with grain would've been best (like 1+)
Unfortunately it also seems like the restored Let It Be received DNR too.

At first I was like, "Uhhhhh..." when he said he wanted to sit in a packed theater to watch this. Then I remembered "Oh, right. Not every country is as much of a COVID-19 hellhole as the US." Edit: I think it's fine it went from a theatrical release to a miniseries. The pandemic has really wrecked my ability to enjoy movies the way I used to, but for some reason, I'm able to handle longer-form stuff. Like video essays about McCartney's entire oeuvre, for example. Maybe because there is a kind of podcast-quality to it that makes it easier for me to digest?

I have been a huge Beatles fan since we first heard of them in the 60's. When VCRs became available for the public to purchase... the first VHS video tape I bought was the "Let It Be" movie. That is how much I love the band. I have always loved the movie. It let us get a glimpse into how they made their records. It was a fantastic documentary of that period of their existence. I never felt that it was this bad movie about the breakup of the band. It was an amazing opportunity to see them creating great songs. I always wished that their were movies from all of their album periods. I have Beatles friends that say it only shows the band as unhappy. I completely disagree. Even the original film has LOTS of times when they are having fun together.
So I was absolutely excited when the announcement of Peter Jackson's new look into this period came about. I want to see as much of it as possible The more - the better. SIX HOURS is a dream come true. I have been waiting and waiting for the new Jackson release. I think it will be my favorite Beatles related release in a long, long time.
Btw... in the clip of Paul and George (which so many people have blown WAY out of proportion)... Paul was trying to explain to George exactly how he wanted him to play a particular guitar part in one of his new songs. Sometimes George wanted to be able to just improv a guitar part... but many times Paul had the guitar part that he wanted in a particular song already figured out in his head. That is all that was going on in that small clip. Like Elliot was saying - it was not a big deal. It was a small thing that was forgotten shortly after it happened.
Also... George quit the group after a fight he had with John (and some sources say they even came to blows). After George left - John said to the other Beatles that they could get Eric Clapton to replace George. I am looking forward to seeing how much (if any) of this stuff is covered in Peter Jackson's film. Eventually George came back - and Billy Preston was brought in to play keyboards for their live performances - and things went pretty well from there right into the live rooftop concert. My greatest wish... is that George would have played one of his new songs live on the rooftop.

I agree with your first paragraph especially. I didn't like the way it was presented and edited by Lindsay-Hogg eventually as a I grew up and watched a few more times though. Most people who say Let It Be was a documentary of the "Break up" of the Beatles are full of a certain bodily expungement and of themselves. No, it was a documentary being made for a TV special at the time with little time to put it together. People are merely parroting what others have falsely said and written to compartmentalize and file away an easier explanation, rewrite history and make a buck possibly. The group had to make albums anyway, Apple was in debt, they needed to get out of it. But these retro-soothsayers also were not in the room while the film was being made. They pay no attention to the fact that Lennon quit the band in September 1969, 8 months AFTER the film was made and they kept it quiet for another 7 months. It's all BS. Nobody knew the band was going to break up until at least Sept 1969, not even them, it has been said by the members themselves interviews, for decades...."hindsight is 20/20." Now we get to see 6 hours of Get Back and see for ourselves to some degree. The RELEASE of the Let It Be film coincided with McCartney's announcement of his solo album [there were big arguments between the members and Allan Klein their crook manager then about that due to the release dates of Let It Be album and movie] and the fatal answer to a question of if the Beatles were going to resume etc. on April 10, 1970, over a year [roughly 14 months] after the film was made. He said no, McCartney gets the blame, Yoko is off the hook for total blame [how stupid] , lol, and it's all morphed into false narratives of gigantic proportion for decades now, often for profit. then someone said Paul McCartney was dead....they are still saying it...Egad give me a break...and the same people are surprised because they thought Keith Richard was dead but walking around giving interviews anyway...😂

Pop Goes the 60s had done a series of fascinating videos analyzing audio from the Get Back sessions which directly contradict many of the widely believed narratives which arose over the years…ie George was bullied by Paul and had many legendary songs rejected, John being strung out on heroin, Paul being bossy and having a major problem with Yoko being there etc…there’s actual audio showing that the opposite was true. Funny how many of these narratives have been treated as gospel
George didn’t have songs rejected, he just didn’t think they were working out as simple “live” arrangements
Paul was actually quite diplomatic and eager to get along with everyone
It was George, not Paul, who had the biggest issue with Yoko’s presence

With, of course, a layer of "realness"- conflict, personal pursuits, and them as individuals who are growing apart. It's incredibly interesting. Feels like you're a fly on the wall watching history being made without all the skewed narratives that the media and public put out.

    THIS DOCUMENTARY IS SICK!
This in my opinion, it's the best documentary ever made about the Beatles.
Sure the "Anthology" is the best and most complete in terms of "general-information" because it's the longest and really starts from their childhood and ends with John's death, with that marvelous heart-breaking "Free as a Bird".
Also "Eight Days a Week" is probably the best about their early years.
    BUT THIS ONE!
THIS ONE IS THE GOLDEN ONE, FULL STOP.
As a passionate musician/composer and a super Beatles fan, I have never seen anything like this one.

I got a bad copy of Let it Be on VHS, however many years back it was. I was surprised there was really only the one scene, with George and Paul, where there was tension. And it was picked up at the tail end where they were talking about what had already happened. There was the one scene where Paul is convincing John he won't be nervous playing live, once they start playing. John just listens, kind of expressionless; he doesn't even seem aggravated.
Yet everyone thinks it's the story of the Beatles breaking up. I think our opinions of the film were more influenced by John, Paul, George and especially Ringo, saying the sessions were dreadful, than by the actual movie. I mean, it was boring, with the first ten minutes of setting up the drumkit and Paul playing the classical piece on the piano, more than full of tension. Once they got to the rooftop, though, it was magic.

It's funny how George Harrison in episode one complains about Paul being bossy and selfish, and then walks in the next day and tells Paul he's written a new song called "I, Me, Mine". That was clearly about Paul, but I doubt George ever admitted it.
Paul a day or two later starts playing a new song called "Carry That Weight". "You're gonna carry that weight a long time." George really did carry that animosity toward Paul for over two decades, if you listen to his interviews through the years.

I've seen several of the documentary's trailers on youtube, and it seems that, so far, there's always "that one guy" in each of them saying how this looks horrible, horrendous, atrocious... (all the possible synonyms), as opposed to basically 99% of the people, who say how awesome and perfect and whatever the footage looks. Since I know jack shit about film making and film tech, that makes me wonder why. Why is it that some small percentage of people not only don't like it, they REALLY don't like it? What is film grain? Is it really better to have certain qualities or is it just a matter of personal tastes/opinions? Cause I really can't see what's wrong with how they treated the footage (but like I said, I know nothing about these things), and if the vast majority also marvels at how it all looks (from what I've seen in youtube, at least), what are you guys seeing that we don't? I hope there will be actual music - six hours is a lot of time. With John supposedly not bringing a lot to the table, what's his role going to be? Will we see Don't Let Me Down over and over again? I wonder if there's video of John's lead singing through Get Back? That would be a treat! Paul trying to lead the others through the formation of Let It Be took hours, what's that going to look like? Also there are many iterations of Get Back, Two of Us, and I've Got a Feeling. George only has a couple songs. John didn't really like I Me Mine. How's this going to turn positive? Will this be more of miniseries of talking with music interludes or music with talking interludes? I can see the Beatles parodying their early selves somewhat but do they truly enjoy each other at this time? Sound bites tend to have a silent Ringo when Matt Williamson shows breakdowns of conversations between the Beatles during rehearsals. I hope there is video of him being himself (whoever that is during that time - surely not "Peace and Love"). I don't know how there can be a lot of optimism between the Beatles during this time because they never played together since then. I mean, was it an amicable breakup? And the rooftop concert day was cold. How can that be fun for them? It seems more of an obligation to fans or something at Paul's insistence. I hope Peter Jackson shows a realistic portrayal of the Beatles during this period. If there's six hours hopefully it won't be dull. Or will it make us wish the Beatles stayed together through the '70s? I do not have expectation of everything being happy and wonderful. Clarity of video reproduction looks excellent!!! I wonder if the first two days will have sort of cliff hangers to make us want to watch the next episodes. Anyway, we'll see!!! Thank you Elliot!!!

One episode in and it's already fascinating. It's probably as blunt and straightforward as a documentary can get and I honestly think that's one of its biggest strengths. It's literally just the footage filmed for the original Let it Be film but uninterrupted and unfiltered. No interviews, no tangents, no fancy editing/digital effects, no over-dramatized narrative, no bullshit at all! And ALL it is is just the band writing and practicing their new songs and planning the concert and it's so interesting to see. I would KILL to have this much studio footage of the Beatles working on other albums in their career like Abbey Road, Revolver, and of course Sgt. Pepper.

I'm glad that "the legend" is being rehabilitated, hopefully to a more truthful AND more positive version. The same with the stories about Paul, who was made the villain, and was probably more like the guy with the most energy and enthusiasm to keep the band alive and get the work done. Lennon even admitted at one point that he had to have somebody with the drive to get them all back to work.
But also, I wonder if there was such a weird mood in the fandom back then, that we NEEDED to think there was serious bad blood that forced the band to end. Weren't we all living with the dream that it could go on forever? From the beginning, they were constantly asked, "When is the bubble going to burst?", and for so many years it magically just kept going and changing and getting better. I think we all needed to believe, "Now they can't stand each other", so we would let go and let them move on to the rest of their careers and lives.

More than anything I just love seeing footage from that era dealt with properly - it doesn't need wizardry. There's plenty of colour and detail on the film. It just needs to be appropriately scanned, wobbles corrected, dust and scratches cleaned up. Then it's suddenly like a window into a past that really existed rather than some other fantastical 'past-world' in weird colours and fuzzy details.
The fact that it's of people I've come to know a lot about whose music I've loved since childhood just takes it over the top. I'm at a point where I don't need it to match some fantasy of magic and togetherness - especially if it's curated to be that way. I mean, George quit. Obviously he was _not_ having a good time. But I do want to get as many insights as I can get about what was actually going on bearing in mind that they were also conscious that they were being filmed and expected people to see the results within a couple of years at most.

One wonders if they had this marvelous footage of the get back sessions, why was it shelved and the miserable let it be movie was put out instead? Sounds like they’re trying to polish up The Beatles myth. Cgi tricks and 56 hours of footage?
