Thanks for the memories, I've seen this group many times. This was Jonnny´s best quartet since he returned to the U.S.scene. And not too many people play with that energy and drive today.I miss both Griff and Ronnie...
Yep! You're right ....That's fast ....:-) I had the pleasure of booking Johnny a number of times at a jazz club I had in Liverpool during the early - mid 70's. .... He played fast then as well! Bob
@vova47 Yeap, I reckon you're right... Such a pity.. and that's why I went to great length to publish these 4 videos here (did a lot of EQ and other tricks to try to get the best possible audio) so other people around this world could enjoy them as much as I do... You're absolutely right about the sheer jazzz quality which we lost in the last 30 years.. the moder "jazz" festivals lack the quality of the groups you've mentioned.. And I fully understand your frustration.. Merry Xmas & a jazzy 2011
@melsamba You know, I don't think they ever recorded this group. They made a video at Vanguard but it wasn't as good as the stuff here. But there was quite a few great groups back then- Dexter Gordon Quartet, George Coleman Quartet, Cedar Walton Quartet, Woody Shaw group, Sphere etc. And now there's almost nothing to hear at the Jazz Festivals it's so commercial. Well, I am through complaining, Merry Christmas, my friend!!
I love KW's clean-cut sound. if you want more him, there's better coverage of him with Griffin at the village vanguard, nyc. BTW, Blues for Harvey sounds a lot like Blues for Gonzi! whatever, it's all good.
i cant help but notice that at 8:57 it says some name which begins with an L, or maybe thats a K...regardless the last name says Williams? whats up with that did they make a mistake or what?

Live, straight ahead jazz...the best! Johnny's got the spirit!

Kenny has maintained this classic sound and melodic swing in his drumming now with the great Bill Charlap Trio etc-a true master drummer
Thanks for posting this video!!!!
I wish the editing was a little slower.
Killing group all around. Whew!!!

Yeah, I'd be out in the ally by the back door, and it would be cold, and I'd be dancin' like a fool. Perfect!
