I feel the looper track “ record and export” is at its best when doing a sampling session pre song. I’m finding my work flow is to get some drums and bass going on track 1, track 2 I try to get a main melody or pad going to set the tone and key of the track. Track 3 will be the sample channel and track 4 the looper. I then load different sounds and samples on track 3 , play and create clips, and then record into the looper. From this I export samples from the looper. Once I have a bunch of samples I can the go into song mode and utilise tracks 1-4 as all drum tracks (1=drums, 2=bass.. etc) and load up the samples respectively.
This is so useful! That opens up the mc101 to huge complex textures. Imagine layering a 3 sound humongous atmospheric pad onto a looper, then freeing up the remaining tracks for drums, bass, or whatever. That's cool.
Glad you enjoyed it! The only downside to this method is the total sample memory in the MC-101 - but I started with an MPC500 which only had 38seconds of sample time!
Coming from a daw workflow im confused on How you handle mix and master when you record to Ableton if you have multiple stuff running on one track, im used to mix with each in strument on different tracks
The idea is great classic 4 track recording tricks, but wouldn't it be great if we could bounce to a single drumpad sample, instead of taking up one whole loop track ? That way you could have 16 of these bounced loop samples in one track, and have 3 tracks free to add stuff and rebounce. @teabreakbeats , also on this video, are there filtersettings in play ? The hihats get dimmer and dimmer at each bounce.
Yeh - I wish you could do that too...I grew up with an MPC sampler, so would love the 16 slots! Yea, you can see I accidentally left the MULTI FX on when bouncing - so it is filtering through multiple times each bounce! Thanks for watching
So the main goal is to merge all simultaniously sounded clips of all tracks by recording them into one clip of one track? I used the same method with 4-track Zoom H4N by bouncing 2 or more recorded tracks in one and after that reusing free tracks again for recording new sounds. But you need to have final version of tone you want. After merging it cannot be adjusted.
Hi thanks for watching - yes that is the idea, and you are right, once you merge the tracks you have to commit! No more editing - but helps to force you to keep progressing forwards.
This is awesome man, thanks for the tip! Just got one of these last week, and found a preset for rain but didn't want to add it in because it'd be wasting a whole track. Now I can with no problems! I'll definitely be checking out some of your other MC-101 vids
I am wondering… actually you can’t do infinite tracks on the mc 101 bc you’re limited to the Looper RAM , which is not much. I was stuck after importing/resampling 6 loops with 4 bars length. Then the mc 101 showed me an error „not enough contiguous memory“. Did you find a workaround for that?
Yes, you now can. With the version 1.7 update you can export the looper tracks as samples and load it back into a drum track (this wasn't possible when I made the video). Thanks for watching!
Do you think Roland will come with an update for the 101 to enable more sound editing capabilities? Or we might have to wait for zenology pro. I have the 707 but I’m also interested on this more portable unit :)
I'm really hoping that they open it up to be able to edit more parameters of the synth engine. However, I think they make the only way via zenology pro to try and get you to pay more to upgrade. Thanks for watching.
@@teabreakbeats Welcome bro. how can i play the full song on the roland mc101 continiously and what is the process of recording the project in DAW?Thanks
@@langcoo7976 Hi - For recording into daw, please check my two videos (Multi Track to Ableton Live and Multi Track to GarageBand). There has been a new firmware Version 1.71 that has a new scene chain mode, so check my video on that too!
The only problem I have with this is that you’re limited to 8 measures. Before watching I thought you were going to use the ability of clips to have different sounds on them. I guess yes you could get a full song done this way since you’ve got 16 clips to play with times 8 measures is a reasonable length piece of music depending on your Tempo .
Hi - on version 1.71 you can now export looper tracks as WAV files. That means you can import them back on individual pads of a drum track! That gives you some more flexibility. Check out my video on the 1.71 update: ruclips.net/video/XTCHteDtCko/видео.html
Is best to keep the track levels mixed in the middle like that ? I’ve been wondering that, because sometimes I wish I had more volume on some tracks . Is there any disadvantage?
Hi Robby - I'll need to test it out, I was worried about clipping which is why I had it halfway. I also accidentally had the MFX on when I was re-sampling so the track gets filtered every time I re-sampled! I'll play around with it and let you know my findings. Thanks for watching!
It feels like a lot of work to then find you have locked in that loop and would have to go back and repeat if you suddenly wanted to edit the mix in the loop. Its really useful to know but feels like a workaround I won't be digging into unless I really take to performing with the 101.
True - this is a bit longwinded and forces you to commit to a loop. I mainly use it to layer background atmospheric noise together to save a couple of pad tracks - not really used this in such an extreme context for bouncing 4 tracks in the real world yet! Thanks for watching
Hi - thanks for watching. At the moment, it is only possible to export the looper track by recording to DAW (see my multi-track to Ableton video) - I am seeing if it is possible to extract the .WAV from the project file, but have no luck at the moment.
Hi - the looper tracks get saved into your project on the SD card (the whole project is a .mpj file, for example Test.mpj). I am not sure how to get into the mpj file to extract the looper track. In short, it is not like it is easily accessible like a .wav file or a .aiff
Hi - Thanks for watching. LT Stands for Looper Track , 4 Stands for Track 4, -01 stands for the clip number. In your case, you have clip 01 selected when you created the new looper. Because I started from an older track with CLIP 02 selected on the original track before deleting it and creating a new Looper Track, my label says LT4-02 instead of LT4-01. I hope this helps you!
