    We lucked up on our timing for going there, for what turned out to be the final year of daily steam. We rode behind 29 (with FA 'B' units) on the way up to the 'ditch' in a dome car, then back on a business car. Then, you rode behind diesels both ways. After staying the night at the El Tovar Hotel (on a corner room with balcony overlooking the depot), the next morning we got to ride the earlier return that day, so we rode behind 29 each way. Not long after that, they stopped running steam each day. In 2015, we went out there on the line again, but behind diesels. It was fun but not as cool

    Well I’m glad that I chose to ride on the Grand Canyon Railway on April 6th 2019 because locomotive 4960 was pulling the train that day & that was the locomotive that was hoping to see.

    even though 29 is now out of service going through a rebuild at least be glad she'll run again in a few years. And hope this rebuild won't take nearly a decade like her last one still don't know why she needed one after the one she got in 1989 but still hope the GCR will get her running in a few years since 4960 has 6 more years left in her flue time so I hope they let it count.

    • @Buynot
      @Buynot 4 года назад +1

      Her last rebuild was in 2004. From 2008-2016 she was on display. When she was returned to service she didn't get an FRA rebuild. Hence why it took only a few months. Since it wasn't an FRA rebuild, they only had 3 years left to run her.

    Since I unfortunately couldn't get to see 29 before her remove from service which is weeks away I'm quite upset about but lucky I know another steam locomotive that'll be going out of service in early 2020 in Nevada that I'll try and see before it is removed from service as well for an overhaul so I don't upset i missed 2 in a row if anyone wants to know just ask

    I feel so jealous you got to see grand canyon railway 29 buynot back in july (I'd would of loved to see 29 myself but I'd have to talk about it with my parents and do lots of planning, purchasing tickets, and more and I mentioned it several times to them during the summer and hey don't know when we can do it plus I had my summer job with metro at the Los Angeles union station) since she'll be pulled from service at the end of next month in need for another overhaul we all wish she can continue in service but it's the rules from the fra that every 15 years or 1,472 service days a steam locomotive will have to be taken out of service for a rebuild if it wants to continue running and the grand canyon railway doesn't want to retire either one of their steam locomotives since its thanks to them that trains run to the grand canyon today plus they already got rid of 18 in the late 2000s and now reisdes in Colorado that is also going through an overhaul as well. And now I feel even more jealous that my uncle and his wife/my aunt will be attending/heading to the doubleheader excursion next Saturday to see and ride behind 29 and 4960. Hopefuly some day I'll get it ride behind either one and maybe even work their and operate one Some day. Since I'm planning on moving out of California once I'm done with college and plan on moving to a state to work on a tourist line. Some people including my dad think I won't be successful but what he doesnt know is that you can makes alot of money while working on a tourist line. And that is something I hope comes true but only time will tell for now

    I sure wish I could go to ride Grand Canyon 29 aka Lake Superior and ispheming 29 sometime this summer but can’t because of my summer job with metro here in la at the Los Angeles union station and if I did go it would take a while to get there by plane and driving from the airport and a bit of discussing with my family but at least I got this to watch and that 4014 will be coming to la this October I’ll let it slide but It’s also quite a shame that Grand Canyon 29 will be going out of service at the end of 2019 for another overhaul but it has it happen because of the fra that every 15 years or every 1,472 service day it has to go through theses repairs to keep the locomotive running and hopefully in about 3 to 4 years from now number 29 will be back new and better to join 4960 and we already know she won’t need one for sometime since she got one in the late 2000s so steam won’t be leaving the Grand Canyon for the next few years

    Hey buynot on a scale of 1 to 10 how hard was it chasing Grand Canyon 29 while during your visit and how much did you enjoy seeing number 29 just 3 to 4 months before it went out of service and seeing a third operational steam locomotive in person the others being Santa Fe 3751 and Fillmore and western 14 I’m actually planning on going back to Fillmore this fall for Labor Day maybe also did you hear that big boy 4014 is coming to Southern California in October and do you have plans on seeing it. I am do you have plans on seeing it

    • @Buynot
      @Buynot 5 лет назад +1

      It was probably a 7 or 8. There's a few good locations you could get pretty to easily (mainly Espee Road, Rodeo Road a few blocks away from the depot at Williams, and a couple within the Grand Canyon Village), but the rest are only accessible via dirt roads that can be up to 13 miles off the main road. The car we had wouldn't have been up for those roads, so we stuck to paved roads only, and unfortunately that meant I could only really do Espee. I could have tried to do some pacing while the tracks paralleled the highway, but since the top speed on the line was 40 MPH, and the speed limit on the highway was around 60, we would've ran the risk of being pulled over for going too slow. It was alot of fun seeing another operational steamer! I want to see 4014 in October, but the day it comes coincides with the weekend of a family member's birthday so chances are that I'm not gonna see it. Hopefully one of these days I'll be able to see it running! But that may not be for a while.

      I see but thanks for replying though and I hope the tickets won’t be expensive like it was in May since I won’t be able to go on any of its days it’ll be going around the east coast because of my summer job with metro but hopefully the tickets are under 50 or 30 dollars hopefully

    • @Buynot
      @Buynot 5 лет назад +1

      Sorry, I'm not sure. I was too focused on whether or not I could set up quick enough, that I wasnt paying much attention to the amount of time that had elapsed. If I were to give an estimate though, I would say 15 to 20 minutes without traffic. I actually was on the road before the train had finished rolling through the crossing at Williams, and the train was in sight about a minute after we got there.
