I’m just so interested in Junko’s psychology, and philosophy. At its most basic, Junko seems to derive pleasure from things and feelings that make her upset/sad/angry/despaired. Perhaps there’s some kind of severe wiring issue in her brain that releases dopamine exclusively in response to negative stimuli. Her frequent persona changes could be a desperate attempt to keep her going when things are fine and any normal person would be happy. An explanation like that explains why she is also, as she states herself, bored in her day to day life. She can’t feel that rush unless something bad is happening. The only thing that confuses me is that Junko’s condition seems contagious, as I’ll elaborate on later. More evidence to suggest that it’s a neurological condition is that Chisa’s lobotomy successfully “infects” her. If Junko had some sort of MRI machine, all she would have to do is scan her own brain, then make Chisa’s brain look like that. However, this doesn’t explain why the 77th class was converted without the use of a lobotomy. So, my theory as to what causes this condition is as follows: It’s a literal disease. Virus, bacteria, amoeba, etcetera. Junko will be our Patient 0, and from there she has caused a massive pandemic. The way that I think it works, is that it eats away at specific parts of your brain, causing its wiring to be all fucked up. A normal human brain will, however, slowly recover from this. Even if not completely, they won’t end up like Junko. However, if you combine some kind of trauma with the damage that the disease has already done to your brain, it creates the perfect neurological storm to create Junko. This may be a far fetched idea, but think about it. That would explain how the 77th class became infected. Not only were they afflicted with the disease’s damage, but they were also exposed to trauma (Chiaki’s death.) This is pretty well the only explanation I can come up with, anyway.

I love how in her eyes it’s a win-win scenario. If she didn’t get caught, she’d get rid of the remaining hope left and there would be nothing but despair which is what she wants. If she did get caught, she would be punished and face the ultimate despair the school could give anyone which is also what she wants. Despair comes either way so she wins either way
Its also why Junko is a villain you just cant fuck around with. You'll never get the satisfaction of killing her because she will enjoy it so might as well just take her out.
It would've been so much better if she prepared the six executions for the other characters and then got executed in those ways. Sure, it still could've ended with Makoto's execution crushing her, but I just think it would've been more interesting (and it would've made more sense as well) to see her get killed in the unused ways (because I bet she was sure she was going to defeat them anyway).

i like to think that junko decided to really die at makoto's execution, because he was dubbed the ultimate hope. to be destroyed by the one feeling you lacked since birth; something you never got to experience, the determination to strive forward and see the outside world again: truly made her feel the most overwhelming amount of despair.
While the series as a whole is just great: the sequels commended for their mysteries, their gameplay additions and improvements, and their story contributions...nothing beats the delightfully, cruelly creative, originality of the original games executions. The Ultimate Punishment satisfies on EVERY conceivable level.

There is a theory that, to cause more despair to people around her, she acts a bit like other people she’s killed. Like in one of the games she says “hey hey” which is what Chiaki would say, so there is a high chance she was mocking Mukuro.

Even though it's anime, they're literally required to make the plot, characters, mysteries, murders, trials, and cases make sense, because the developers wanted the game's players to use their brains to understand all the info the game gives you. I don't know, the pink is so vivid, and it really sets a mood that treats horrible deaths as exciting and in some way beautiful. Honestly I think red blood would lessen the experience. I mean, for comparison, which is more painful to watch, the deaths in the Hope or Despair arc? I'd say despair, and the psychopop style is part of the reason. That heart-wrenching death at the end not only gets me every time on an emotional level, but makes me feel sick to my stomach.

And the whole point of the punishment is to bring despair, so she died, unhappy with it, feeling ultimate, eternal, and true despair, all of the executions have a deeper meaning if you read into them. She was unhappy, and she died with hope, which caused her true despair...

I love how in her eyes it’s a win-win scenario. If she didn’t get caught, she’d get rid of the remaining hope left and there would be nothing but despair which is what she wants. It would've been so much better if she prepared the six executions for the other characters and then got executed in those ways.
Sure, it still could've ended with Makoto's execution crushing her, but I just think it would've been more interesting (and it would've made more sense as well) to see her get killed in the unused ways (because I bet she was sure she was going to defeat them anyway).

No, it doesn't. If anything, it only serves to compound Junko's happiness and joy, which is the exact opposite of what the U.P is supposed to do. Junko enjoyed her punishment in defeat even more than she enjoyed her time on the top of the dung heap. She got everything she had been praying to the devil for all her life. Which was despair. In her mind, she won in the end by losing.

I don't know, the pink is so vivid, and it really sets a mood that treats horrible deaths as exciting and in some way beautiful. Honestly I think red blood would lessen the experience. I mean, for comparison, which is more painful to watch, the deaths in the Hope or Despair arc? I'd say despair, and the psychopop style is part of the reason. That heart-wrenching death at the end not only gets me every time on an emotional level, but makes me feel sick to my stomach.

This is why at the end of her execution, the crusher stops for a second, giving her the hope of living, which causes true despair for her. And the whole point of the punishment is to bring despair, so she died, unhappy with it, feeling ultimate, eternal, and true despair, all of the executions have a deeper meaning if you read into them. She was unhappy, and she died with hope, which caused her true despair...
