I've heard tons of great jump/swing players over the years and Charlie blows me away every time. I used to see this line up at the Decade in Pittsburgh, gave me chills every time. Dobie has some of the best chops of any drummer I've heard playing this style. Absolutely badass
Agreed. I have seen them in small bars with intimate (less than 100) audiences all over the United States. Have also seen them rock a festival crowd of more than 20,000 too..which is always a riot.
@1stchoicemodern Me and my buddies were glad that so few people knew about them that we could go see them twice a year at Fitzgerald's in Berwyn and walk right up to the stage and talk to these guys between sets - our favorite band and we could see them for ten bucks at a local bar - awesome.
It's mind-blowing to think that Charlie's main instrument was the harp. He stepped aside and went to guitar when Rick joined the band. I'd love to have talent like that.
I saw them on their last east coast tour together and spoke to Charlie about it. He basically was just retiring from touring. He's been doing it since the mid-70s and that's a good long time with a touring one-night-stand blues band. Charlie will be 60 in 2013 I think. He had been pretty judicious with his money and felt comfortable that he could retire from the road and just work in his home area, Berkelely/San Francisco.
Awesome band ! I live in Minnesota and I have my CDs and shirts all signed by this band . Thank you for the upload . I think he's the best guitarists around .
i saw this band in new orleans like 25 years ago, he was playing a gold gibson and signed my CD after the show. Im here 25years later trying to get some tips to help me play guitar better. he is unreal
fantastic band. estrin's one of the best harp players going and baty is the ball. too bad little charlie's not with them anymore but rick continues on.
my money is on that bit of broken tape where he does those crazy arpeggios some guitar fan rewound that part of the video over n over, just like any vhs version of crossroads where the duel is. lol
@1stchoicemodern Baty and Estrin are two of the absolute MASTERS of Jump-Swing Blues. Kid Andersen is a hell of a Guitar player but does not come close to Little C".
Feel sorry for Anson, having to stand next to a guitar player that is twice what he is. As a person too.little Charley would at least say hi to his fans. Anson wouldn’t even look at you, just walk past without saying a word…….
wow...great!
Fantastic playing.
Pure Heaven
You got that right one of the best RIP CHARLIE BATY
Little Charlie makes me happy.
Used to go see them in Sacramento and Davis in around 1981 - 1982. Great music.
Charlie is THE man. You can still catch him live in California.

Little Charlie is missed terribly
Holy Moly - Charlie Baty is just amazing!!! WOW!!!
Charlie Baty should have definitely been on Rolling Stone's list of greatest guitar players.
Sorely overlooked.
LOVE THIS! We were lucky enough to see them a few times during tours here in the Southeast. One of my all time favorite bands. Thanks for posting.

God given talent, no other choice. Love this guy
With Brad Lee Sexton on bass. Great player, great guy. RIP '95.
Smokin' solo from Charlie!

@danball1949 I was wondering what happened to Charlie. Last I heard they were touring as Rick Estrin & the Nightcats.

Kinda hard to believe that Charlie was actually a harp player in the beginning. He moved over to guitar so Rick could get in. Amazing!
JAZZ gILLUM TUNENICE!
@MinkSnopes1 Just goes to show how little Rolling Stone knows!
