Yamaha basses are criminally underrated
Agreed - my first Yamaha was a BB424 which was a brilliant little bass. Regret selling it, but I have since acquired a BB1024 and more recently a BB434. Both brilliant! The 1024 is a tad heavy but probably my best bass!
@Peter, how is the sound of the BB434? Consider getting a new bass and I'm still not sure if I should go with the TRBX 504/5 or the BB434/5
@@TinyTeaKettle hi Andreas, I love the sound of the BB434 - doesn't quite match my BB1024 but not far off. I've not played the TRBX504 so can't really compare. The 504 does however have the option of active of passive mode, whilst the 434 is passive only...
@@TinyTeaKettle I got me the BB424X,BB434, BB734A and TRBX504 and these basses cover lots of ground, really don't need anything else.Maybe a TRBX304 soon. Will see
I was just trying out one of the natural wood style ones
(one of the EW ones)(EW was the name of the bass, not talking about the quality)
and it was just beautiful and everything I want out of an instrument.
TRBX 504/5: Excellent construction, playability at the top, ZERO neck diving, ultra sound-flexibility, perfect switch active-passive (same volume, tone control on passive etc). Yamaha is simply the best, NO FRILLS, total quality also in non-Japan assemblies. Great!
I wish I could be as happy about anything as Lee is when he plays bass, that's sheer joy right there, then again, I might smile that big too if I could play half as good as him, LOL.
Glad you guys finally reviewed these, they are really great basses. I got the 305 and added an a passive switch to it, that way I have the passive tones of the 505 with the quick selection blade switch of the 305 :).
can you please tell me how you did the passive switch? I also have the 305
Let us humble folk know how you did it mr Epicest.
EpictheEpicest well you are not having the passive tone of the TRBX505,cause the 500 series have alnico pups against the ceramic found on 300 series.
@@jmwreck I know I'm way late with this, but you just have to disconnect the preamp from the pickups and add an on/on switch between them
@@EpictheEpicest any sound degradation?
These basses sound incredible in person and the active switch adds another level of clarity and punch that you can dial in so easily with the EQ
Some people make such a drama around the truss rod adjusting. I remember in the 80s my brother got a Gibson SG and had to get the truss rod adjusted, well you would have thought the guitar was going in for major surgery mixed with witchcraft to hear the guy that was going to do it. I think before the internet they wanted to keep it a secret how easy and simple it really is
that jam at the beginning sounds like some earthworm jim music
Ayyoww!
lmao I was trying to put my finger on it and I saw this. 100% spot on. like some old menu screen music lol
holy shit, you're right!! Brings memories back! :)
As a guitar player, I have to say it's part of a daily ritual of mine to revisit your video intros and play along and improvise over the vamps you play. Really fun. Thanks for sending the inspired bass lines all the way to Detroit!
BOOST!
My eyeballs immediately zeroed in on the beautiful candy apple red 5 string TRBX305 near Nathan's left knee.
thats the one I have! its as beautiful as it looks on screen
Wow. These basses sound AMAZING!! I'm super impressed! Best all-around bang for your buck in my opinion.
Love the matte finish on the 5 string.
the 304/305 is my go to bass I recommend beginners. there is just nothing to complain about for that little money.
you recommend a 5 string for beginners? I don't play bass yet, but I am tempted to buy a yamaha.
@@MrTw2009 I know plenty of people who started out on a 5 string. But only get one if the style music you want to play a 5 string is typical. you wont use the low B in every song but you dont want to buy a 5 string bass and NEVER use the 5th string
Thanks, watching reviews to get my first bass, 304 is on the top of my list
@@BassRacerx When I started on bass it was with a 5 string. Don't remember the bass, but it was of far lesser quality than these Yamahas.
TRBX 305 is a really good bass, I love my 305. I know even professional bassists using a 305.
I have trbx 505. It is a great bass as you get a mercedes for the price of škoda. It has nice mid range and trebl and earth shattering low end. B string is excellent and G string is also sweet on higher frets. It would work as nice with a hi C string as well as with a low B.
Hey btw are the pickups on 5xx different than 3xx? Or is the only difference in the active/passive switch?
the bridge pickup sounds quite ass though
@@MyGroo different. 500 series have alnico V pickups. 300 series have ceramic pickups.
Bought one of these a couple of years ago. It was literally love at first note.
i came here to see the trbx505 demo but i didnt expect to see you playing with each others knobs!
LOL
I have a TRBX605. And yes, these basses sound pretty much like in the demo, a little anemic out of the box if you ask me. CHANGE THE STRINGS IMMEDIATELY! You will notice and incredibly improved sound instantly. Ernie Ball Cobalts (even the EB Cobalt Flats) will put some cojones into the sound. The output will rise drastically and you might have to lower the pickups. D'Addario NYXL's, DR Pure Blues are a huge improvement as well. Also, pickup height is critical. I love that my bass only weighs 8.1 pounds! They are versatile basses, but if you're looking for the ping and zing that slap requires, a SR505 with Bartolinis might be a better choice.
I'm garbage at changing strings 😆
i've always wondered this about bass players. is the reason you guys leave strings on for so long because 1. you don't need to very often 2. have very little practice doing so because of lack of need 3. hesitation because of cost.
as a banjo and guitar player i feel like i change strings almost as often as i practise.
@@Yourmomma568 Speaking only for myself, I tend to replace strings on each bass around twice a year. Also having played guitar, I've concluded that strings should be replaced more frequently due to their being smaller gauge than bass strings; thinner strings seem more susceptible to wear from skin oil's dilute acids and oxidation. That bass strings are more expensive per set is another reason why a lot of players hesitate to replace them often. Furthermore, changing bass strings are quite simple, yet replacing strings with lighter or heavier gauge sets requires a good working knowledge of truss rod, bridge saddle, and intonation adjustment to compensate for the gauge differences.
@@FenderBassMan interesting insight. thanks a lot.
@@Yourmomma568 For me, it's option 1 really. I play primarily flatwound strings, which don't collect grime like roundwounds (there are no grooves), so last a very long time - they are also loved for their deadened thump by a lot of players.
For my roundwound strings, I change every few months.
I JUST ordered one in pewter, a 4-string. I haven't touched a bass in over 3 years and I want to get back into playing. And even before that I wasn't ever really great at the bass but definitely I have a good grasp of the basics. So I decided to go cheaper than what I used to play instead of a $500 Washburn I'm going with this cheaper but probably just as good Yamaha bass to re-start my journey in learning to get good at this amazing instrument. I think this is the greatest choice to start and keep until the end of my days and if I get anywhere near as good as these guys I can upgrade to more expensive basses. I'd still keep this one though. And I will be pairing it with a Hartke HD50 amp I decided to get with it too. Wish me luck!
Own one of them they're so comfortable to play it's unreal
3 days before this review was posted I had already bought one
How do you like it so far?
I think you guys should crank up the "yeahs" and "there you goes"!
I always love Yamaha bass Guitars design ... love the new curves. Wonder why they didn't too innovative on guitar ...
Boy Aditya Have you seen the Japanese made Yamaha guitars? I feel they have been innovative for decades with their guitar models.
I really don't like their looks, but they are great basses! I like the 70s style a lot but the almost straight top horn bugs me.
I think Yamaha are committed to quality rather than paying for a famous name ,they where first to address the LP style neck joint problem and the weakness of the back of headstock (for example the SG, SF, and SA ranges) they really design great playing instruments with great sustain.
But Yamaha were innovative on guitar. Their FG series of acoustics are the best selling student instruments of all time, they really set the standard for affordable solid top guitars. Electrics like the Yamaha Revstar are pretty awesome as well. Search Laura Cox Yamaha Revstar to see and hear one played really well.
Yamaha has made great electric guitars and basses for years. I have a Yamaha Weddington which I will never sell and I’ve owned some high end Pacifica’s. I think their marketing and promotion just sucks. That or they sell enough other things that they don’t care.
I was thinking about getting me a short scale just for ease of playability but forget that...this bass is the way to go!
You get more tones too!
6:52 love those chords.....
Wow, every EQ change sounds great. And Lee is such a good player!
i just bought 4 string 304 new for $209 at a local electronic store in NYC!!!
They are great. I own the white one. Many options to control the sound. And the battery lasts very long. Plays very nice. Even kind of experts thougt they were expensive basses. Only the presets are not really useful
Niklas E On my TRBX504 the battery is 2 years old and still going strong.
Niklas E can you change the pre sets?
@@meatrocket1good question! And: does it give you the option of 'none'? Or is that a stupid question?
There you go
Yahama has been putting a lot of more modern looking and sounding stuff in the last couple years. Real improvement on there old stuff looks wise.
Killer Clãw Yamaha...
Yeah, they've got a really interesting sort of modern/retro juxtaposition going on. The BB looks like you should be seeing it in surf rock revivals, while the TRBX would be perfect for anything from classic metal to modern funk.
I love Nathans approach to trussrod adjustment. LOL :-D
"twenny quid, drop it 'round my 'ouse i'll get ya sorted"
Will you ever review the BB series?
Do a review ,please of the new Yamaha BB basses.
Love most-everything about his bass ( however ) can you Remove the Goofy Plastic . . . that Label's the 5 way switch? It sounds & looks killer. oNe LovE from NYC
thank you im looking to buy this bass this helped
I sure hope so. Have a 305 on da way!
Started with a TRBX 170. Spent a month testing out a Fender Jazz, Pbass, Musicman, Ibanez, even a Cort.
Went with a trbx504. It has a really good range and fast neck. Very enjoyable to play. :)
Hello guys! Please take a review a Yamaha BB series. Thank you very much,Cheers!
I have both TRBX305 and BB434, both almost play the same. Soundwise, the TRBX305 got some edge and warmth, BB434 is punchy and full sounding
Best basses I heard here.
You guys should get your paws on the new BB series. They're beyond amazing at every pricepoint.
IPYF yep, especially the BB734A im getting this one its a tone monster.
I really want them to show these basses off
I've go the BB434 and it's superb! But I think my BB1024 is my best bass!
The black one got a sweet snap. I love it Yamaha are great sounding basses. just my opinion I have one .lol
Whats the difference between 600 and 500 series apart from different wood?
Oh wow, the 304 kinda has the ability to sound like a stingray. Considering I've always been looking for that tone and stingrays are hard to find in our country, I just might go for the 304 instead 🤔
Hey What did you go for eventually?
@@akinkunmiogunbiyi658 neither. Budget got tight at the time and I settled for a 174EW sadly. Would go for the stingray if I had waited longer though since they're finally available here.
I am getting this asap
Dobiju savršene primjerke za promociju. Kad ju ti kupiš, ne valja vrat, ne možeš spustiti action da žica nema buzz
that intro was pretty wicked
guys do a video on the yamaha bb series please!!!!!! maybe show some cheap ones and the high tier ones
Great vid guys. Any chance you could Review the new Fender Aerodyne Jazz?
Are these basses suitable to play jazz? Need some opinio
Thank you so much Anderton's :')
You are very welcome...
I have the end-all point on the "Does wood type make a difference in tone" debate. Yes, yes wood absolutely does make a difference, but not the way everyone expects. Tone wood makes a difference in that if a guitar doesn't give you wood, then your tone is going to suck.
But it won't suck your wood. Which sucks. But in the suck sort of way, nit sucking sort of way.
Which do you guys prefer. SR300E or TRBX304? i like the look of the trbx but the Sr300 in your other video seems to have better sound . I'm torn between the 2 on which to get
Everything my that is made by Yamaha has a certain beginner vibe. Take it for what it's worth its ez to play on IMHO.
that white bass needs a setup, but the Yamahas are solid.
The TRBX304 looks amazing for people who want to start playing the bass. I'm not sure if it is as mod-friendly as the MusicMan Sterling Ray4. If, for example, I want to switch the internal pre-amp for a DarkGlass ToneCapsule or replace de pickups in the future, is it possible? is it easy?
I upgraded my Yamaha TRBX-174EW with EMG Geezer Butler pickups, and it sounds and plays amazing!
When is andertons getting the epiphone thunderbird vintage pro and embassy pro basses
When you start using elementary-school punctuation.
i got it and i love it
I've been playing drums for a while and I want to pick up the bass now, I thinking of buying the 505, I want to get into Jazz and then fusion, what do you guys think?
Go for it
I have one it's a great bass
Thanks to bocchi the rock I tracked down a 98 TRBJP 4 mk2 in orange burst for $850 as the bassist plays a 1004j natural my bass just has a different neck could I add a passive switch?
Yamaha needs to rotate the headstock or make left-handed necks. Then I will buy one.
Can someone explain what quid is? I've heard so many British reviewers say something is X amount of quid, but I thought your currency was pounds. Is that like cents in the US?
...also I want one of those 505s. Great stuff!
Quid is a slang word for pound (like dollars are called bucks)
if you only had one bass to have for everything between these Yamaha TRB or the Marcus Miller Sire's? that Yamaha really cuts thru however those Sire's kinda have a more conventional sound whereas the Yamaha leans towards a more modern sound? Ive played them both in a few situations and the Sire was nice but far less quality in the build, as well as very heavy at 11lbs and super neck heavy so it dives. Also that C shape neck felt nice, but when I picked up the Yamaha [being bias to Sire] Itruelry wanted and expected it to out shine the Yamaha but to my dismay the Yamaha simply felt,, sounded, as well as that Shape with ergonomic's simply felt smoother to me. and Sire is imitating the first build of electric basses & Yamaha is focused on modern touches. I'm interested in you guys take?
Yamaha bass vs cort bass.... hmmmm.....who will win?
Just my opinion, but I would never let someone else moving the knobs of my bass, for me it feels like someone grabbing my balls... btw I have a TRBX305 since 2015 and is just a piece of gold (except for those moments when the battery dies so is just a piece of shit, but I've learned to keep a constant battery replacement in my bag).
Very good review and comparison.
NOICE indeed
Like the sound. I can get a used one for a $100. Dunno if it's genuine. BTW It's a RBS MS200.
well this model is from the early 90's so if its in a good shape, it rocks. Did you buy it ?
Like the Yamaha logo on the blackboard. :)
Can I use this particular model (TRBX305) for a high C tuning instead of low B tuning? Can I just rearrange the strings and start playing or do I have to do any modifications relating to the nut and bridge?
50x has neodymium in the pickup vs ceramic on the 30x
Amazing tone#
After a couple of clips i
Hi there, great video, great sound !
I'd like to know, what exactly is the signal chain here. Is it just bass - interface, or are there any amps / preamps / speakers or any other signal processing involved ?
Cheers, Paco
It's all sampled on a Korg and then synchronized with video in post-production, then fed with a Tandy cable to a Gateway computer running Windows98 .
Great video, looking at that 304
3:01 buy it!
You guys seem to love everything, I guess that's what happens when your trying to sell it.
Whats the name of the first song, something about blockheads?
Those basses sound so much better than my '97 Yamaha BB G5. Which would have been the equivalent model at the time.
How do you get the black in a matte finish? I could only find them in a glossy black finish...
EDIT: Oops, I made a mistake. I confused it with a different model.
If I am not mistaken, 304/305 are glossy, 504/505 are matte.
That’s what I meant
Ok sounds great ....where are they on your site ?
Nice, will you stock the new Yamaha BB's? Not that many places seem to have them.
ben Davies i placedmy order for the new BB734A direct from Yamaha store in Europe cause they'ee hard to find.
where are the sounds like videos =(
Nice intrudution
Hace poco he adquirido este bajo y trastea infernalmente, no sé si he tenido mala suerte o el bajo es una porquería, lo he llevado varias veces a luthier y no ha manera de que suene bien.
Is the trb1004j better then the trbx 504???
I love the affordable bass reviews, but how about some upscale basses? Like the Nathan East and or Billy Sheehan models. I’d love to hear how those sound. Thank you.
Yamaha TRBX 304 or Spector Performer???
Jeeeeezus chroist that crankitacoupleofturns setup on the fly gave me some serious anxiety.
Geez those sound awesome T_T
604 vs 504?
Does it have round wound strings or flat
Is this a jazz bass or precision bass?
What do you recommend, an ibanez sr300eb or a yamaha trbx304?
I own both! And yamaha trbx304 wins😊
I'm getting the Yamaha trbx305 5 string in black. But one question. Is the bass a precision or a Jazz
neither
504 winner!
SOLD!
Bass without tone control?
Ye it has tone presets
This or the BB734A!!? Can someone help me understand what I would get for the extra $$ on a BB734A?
Passive/active switch...
Do they make these Left Handed? The 5 string model

But are they schafordable?
Tom Tobin yes they are
