  • The San Antonio puffy taco is a delicious and unique Tex-Mex dish that originated in San Antonio, Texas. It is a variation of the traditional taco, but what sets it apart is its distinctive puffy and crispy shell.
The puffy taco shell is made by deep-frying corn tortillas until they puff up and become light and crispy. The tortillas used for puffy tacos are typically made from masa harina, a type of corn flour used in Mexican cuisine. The deep-frying process gives the shell its signature texture and flavor.
Once the taco shell is prepared, it is filled with various ingredients like seasoned ground beef, shredded chicken, or other meats, along with lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, guacamole, and salsa. The fillings can vary based on personal preferences and the restaurant or taqueria where the puffy taco is served.
Puffy tacos are often served as a street food or in Tex-Mex restaurants in San Antonio. They have gained popularity and have become a local specialty, attracting both locals and tourists alike. The combination of the crispy shell and flavorful fillings makes them a delicious and satisfying treat.
If you're ever in San Antonio, trying a puffy taco is a must-do culinary experience. Several establishments in the city are known for their puffy tacos, so you'll have plenty of options to choose from and enjoy this unique Tex-Mex delight.

We used to eat puffy tacos in Austin in the early 1970s. They are available in all the big cities in Texas.
