I'm in Derry in the north. Which as has been said is worth a visit for reasons not limited to the pubs in and around the city centre. In terms of other parts of the island I personally love, I'd include the city of Kilkenny, which is possibly my favourite city on the island to visit.

Yes, Temple bar is a tourist trap but you have to walk through the district just to get a feel for it. I would recommend you go to Gallagher‘s Boxty house. You have to see capital city and then get out and about around the rest of the country which is spectacularly gorgeous. The National Gallery is a great collection of art in general and Irish art The national Museum of Ireland has the archaeology of the country. It’s spectacular. If you can try and take a show in Dublin, incredible theater or GAA hurling or Gaelic football
If you want to see what Ireland is really like then forget about the Kerry, Dublin and Galway tourist traps. Go to Leitrim, Cavan, Limerick, Offaly, Fermanagh, Laois, Monaghan, Westmeath. These are the hidden gems of Ireland with so much more history and stories to offer. And your dollar will go way way further than in that hole in Dublin.
Ireland is not much wetter than London, where I lived for 35 years. You may read that it rains for half the days of the year, but days when there's a 2 minute shower are also counted as rainy days. And, it often just rains during the night and the next daylight time is sunny, that's counted as a rainy day too.

I’m not sure what hundreds of thousands of Irish were doing flocking into Ellis island after the famine ended. When you consider the famine was in the late 1840s, and the immigrant inspection and processing centre did not open until 1892.

It's not a touchy subject (St Patrick) in Ireland. We are taught in primary school from age 4 that he was Welsh and brought over by pirates to be a slave in Ireland. We never claimed he was Irish, just that he was the patron saint of Ireland who, after escaping Ireland, was called back there by God to bring Christianity to the people there.
