Foreclosure (1 of 3): This is not repression!

  • There are a series of moments in Freud's work - in the Wolfman case, in respect of Judge Scheber's delusions - where he struggles to isolate a psychical mechanism that is paradigmatically different to repression. His choice of term 'verwerfung' for this different psychical mode of defense is taken up by Lacan as 'foreclosure'. Freud: "What was abolished internally returns from without". Lacan: "What is refused in the symbolic returns in the real". Genius.

@@Chorismos no, but even if that were the origin of this query, there would be nothing wrong with that. no reason to gatekeep it.

@@beanbagchair I'm sorry if this sounded like gatekeeping. That was not my intention. Just that I am also going through a Lacan rabbit hole currently thanks to Žižek.

I learn much ado about Lacan from these mini-lectures. Thank you so much, Derek. Just noticed your slip at the beginning 'neurotic is a form of psychotic suffering?' But you're human. Can you talk a little on Kant with Sade. You touch on it in your final talk on the Other, desire is the [superego?] desire of the otherness of the Other. Something like that. And how in our secular world, God is Dead, more and more of us are vulnerable to psychosis and neurosis with death of the Name of Father, and the increasing importance of the Father's Name.

The best recent commentary on Kant avec Sade is by Dany Nobus and can be found as a book chapter in a book I co-edited entitled Reading Lacan's Ecrit. Dany has also a full book length version of this commentary entitled The Law of Desire. I would recommend those highly.

Lacan created two schemata in reference to Marquis de Sade, iirc

If you want to go back for it, you can find the Hegel reference in Zizek's preface to Ethics of the Real, at least in the Verso edition
