Perfect response!! I wondered if any organization in her area helps disabled individuals obtain end of life medical care against the wishes of family members. When basic care is provided by close relatives -- who are fully able to intimidate and even threaten the disabled individual -- a lawyer may be needed to step in and help the person find independent housing and personal care resources.
I like that Jim was a bit less patient and a bit more forceful. I have been listening for a long time and Jim has great knowledge and arguments but he use to give callers too much freedom rather than holding their feet to the fire. I hope he keeps improving in this direction.
Nick has a better take on the start of the universe than 99% of astrophysicists. It’s amazing! He should be writing up his findings to smoothly go through peer review.
No, sir, he does not. He appears to have learned a few words but has no idea of the context to which they apply or do not apply. And if he did, he should publish his theory in the appropriate peer-reviewed journal.
@@marcosolo6491 Exactly, also, they have to prove that the only form of life is life as we know it, in this instanciation of the universe. “Why does there need to be absence of a god?” Answer: there doesn’t. But if you want me to worship, obey, or live my live according to theocratic rules you make up, you need to provide evidence that this god exists. You are shifting the burden of proof. “What evidence are you looking for?” I like Jim Barrow’s response that for the same reason a prosecutor can’t ask the jury what evidence would result in a guilty verdict, you can’t expect the atheist to do your homework.
well said. I always wonder how so many people are intensely critical of anything that is claimed be it by government, friends or just other people but have this gigantic logically-flawed blind spot when it comes to their religion. A: Do you believe in Santa Clause or the Easter Bunny? B: of course not, thats just childrens stories somebody invented A: why do you believe in God then? Same thing B: THATS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT HOW DARE YOU ATTACK MY FAITH???
@@fritzhaselnuss7852 “blind spot”: I think you may have just hit the nail on the head. Religious folk seem to be rational in most every other way, but when it comes to their god, there seems to be an inability to see using their regular skepticism.
I spent my summer as an intern at a law firm dealing with CVA cases, those cases where people who had been abused as children can file claims despite the statute of limitations. I would say I worked through somewhere between 50-100 cases. There were maybe 5 or 6 public school cases. Another 5 or so cases against non-Catholic churches/schools. A couple against the boy scouts. The rest were against Catholic organizations.
My situation isn't as bad as Aidan's but I haven't heard something so relatable in a while. Even my closest friends who are like family, as much as they listen I don't feel they can ever fully understand.
Granting Sliew's point about that list was wrong. He implies that all of these diseases present as a non-inherited mutation, which is why he brings it up to argue that mutation cannot introduce viable genetic variation and therefor could not result in evolution. In fact, the very first entry: Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency is a codominant, inherited disease. The fact that we have identified a pathogenic variant of a gene doesn't mean every person with that variant mutated independently, and that makes his point brazen cherry-picking. We can also point to mutations in genes that cause improved health. I suggest SLC30A8, which when mutated reduces the risk of diabetes. See the paper "Loss-of-function mutations in SLC30A8 protect against type 2 diabetes". It is the exact same type of condition as he holds up as evidence, and would if the effect was reversed. Regarding the Genetic and Rare Disease (GARD) site: they list sickle cell anemia, which would be a great place to point out that harmful/beneficial isn't black and white. It's about adapting to the stresses of the environment. Heterozygotes for sickle cell have increased resistance to malaria and some fully functioning red blood cells. They may have a harder time running a marathon, but they have higher fitness than non-sickle celled individuals in regions where malaria is a serious problem. If malaria isn't a major threat to general well-being such as through medicine or malaria being uncommon where you are, that benefit is reduced and the costs outweigh it. For an excellent explanation of this with better citations, see "Sickle Cell Anaemia and Malaria" by Lucio Luzzatto. Sliew not only doesn't understand evolution, but he doesn't understand the information he holds up as evidence while it refutes his point.
It seemed odd the he would use genetic disease and the number of disease to disprove evolution! The fact that there are so many diseases, through mutual (see Covid) is evidence for evolution. Nice way to take evidence and completely misinterpret it to support your narrative.
When Nick said that he'd "studied physics and things" I was really hoping Jim or Dave would ask him where exactly he studied? Because I'm willing to bet it was the University of Google.
On one hand I want to see Matt back to the show soon, but on the other hand I'm really worried that some of these callers might make his heart explodes.
I've only been following this channel for a few months, and so far I never really felt like Jim was a very strong guest since Matt was always dominating the conversation. This episode Jim blew my expectations out of the water, he was super-knowledgeable and held his own as good as Matt any day!
Nick: There is no way to deny that X happened to start the universe. Jim: How can you say that when we can't get past the Planck time? Nick: I'm not saying I know how it did happen (OK), but I'm not saying it's impossible for it to happen. WTF? YOU JUST SAID WE CAN'T DENY HOW IT HAPPENED!!! Nick: We don't have any other examples of "undirected processes". Uh, Nick. Everything in nature seems to be undirected. EVERYTHING. Nick: These cosmological values are "too particular" to have come about by chance. OH! So you know how they are supposed to work?!?!? You have experience in creating a universe yourself that tells you just HOW PARTICULARLY SPECIFIC they must be in order to create a universe??? Yeah, right. This is what is called a logical fallacy of incredulity. That is, Nick, you can't imagine any other way that something can happen, so you blame an outside godlike entity with no evidence that it even exists or existed. Oh, and when you said scientists believe in what you do, and Jim said he could find an equal number that don't, your reply was weird. You said a "small number" of those that don't agree. You just went from a ratio of 50-50 to a numerical value (few). What that means is that even your own scientists are few in number. If you can't grasp this mathematical conundrum, you have no business talking about the universe's constants!
I do have to give him some credit for prefacing his call by saying none of it would work as a basis for further religious thoughts etc., but yeah he is desperate to bend everything to fit his conclusions nonetheless. Jim was the perfect person for him to call in to.
I'm always a little bewildered by "fine-tuning" as an argument for the existence of a deity. Absent a deity, would those proponents expect to find us living in a universe that WASN'T suited to our type of life? In fact, if we somehow existed in a universe that couldn't give rise to us, THAT would be an argument for an outside intervention.
The fact that most of the earth is hostile to human life pretty much invalidates their argument. Why would god cover most of the earth with water we can't drink, when there are millions of humans who struggle to get drinking water on a daily basis? Or make animals that want to kill and eat us? Answer, he wouldn't.

Doesn't answer it. Then we get the tapdance, evasions and red herrings. Same old story. And then come the fabrications and lies. Same old story.. Then capped off by a claim of the shows hosts "being in error"
Yep, they _really_ need to start insisting more that callers address the questions, and if they refuse or evade two or three times, just end the call. Not addressing what the other person says, let alone asks, is a demonstration that you're not interested or capable of an honest conversation - and that means you're not worth wasting any (more) time on. Period.
There's an old saying that if you want to teach a dog a trick you need to be smarter than the dog. Paul found some people to buy his book on biblical prophesies which leaves me wondering how he got all those people to sit, stay, and beg?
Sliew-(AU): The presence of the third molar, or wisdom tooth, is controlled by a gene called PAX9, widely present among primates and some other mammals. In fact, ours is almost identical to gorillas. A mutation of that gene would mean the absence of the third molar, which means that the wisdom teeth will simply never develop. That is why not everyone has them. Keep in mind that this means that even a deactivated or non-functional mutation can be very beneficial. And it would be nice to cause its deactivation in all of us so that no one has to suffer and run to the dentist, if their jaw is not big enough for all their teeth. Evolution doesn't have a goal, it uses blind mechanisms of mutations, which come up in the midst of naturally selective patterns, as a source of variation. What you get from that are varying probabilities of this mutation according to how favorable the genetic predispositions are, and this is what we see.
Happy New Year to you all. So glad to hear Matt again. I wish him a very quick recovery, because I miss him here. Does not mean Dave and Jim are not good enough. Great team today. @ Aidan, I hope you find people who will help you in the difficult time to come. @ Sliew. Study is something different then reading and reading. Learning a biology book by heart does not mean you understand anything you can cite. Visiting a website is not enough. Find out what the maker knows about the subject he has made the site for.
I LOVE when people like Sliew call an atheist show to say oh evolution can't be true. I know almost nothing about evolution but I've got it all figured out. Do you realize that if you could actually disprove evolution, you would be one of the most famous people in history? Like if I actually thought that I had information that could disprove evolution, I wouldn't be calling a fucking RUclips show. I would be contacting every single fucking biologist in the field that I could. Working my way up the ladder to show why it's wrong. But if he sat down with an actual biologist who is an expert in evolution and had a conversation, which I can pretty much guarantee you he has not, they would laugh him out of the building because every response they would have he would likely not understand. It's like me going to a fucking rocket scientist with almost no knowledge on rockets at all besides like a 05% knowledge base, and saying that they've built them all wrong. And then when they refute me with the actual information, that I don't understand, I still think I'm right it's fucking hysterical
Unfortunately (and I say this as an atheist and a defender of evolution) Jim Barrows seems to be about as ignorant of the theory of evolution as the caller Sliew. Sliew claimed that the source of genetic variation is mutation. He was correct in that, but Barrows denied that is true. Mutation is in fact the ultimate source of all allele variation in the genetic code. Recombination during sexual reproduction has no bearing on that issue. There is a systems dynamics explanation of the way random mutation creates a repertoire of variation-- good, bad, and indifferent-- in the genome and how natural selection continuously winnows out the bad and causes the good to be differentially successful in reproduction over time. Too bad Barrows doesn't understand evolution well enough to defend it correctly. It made me want to scream. This kind of stuff discredits the secular viewpoint. I've seen Barrows fail at scientific arguments before. If one doesn't know something about a scientific field, that's acceptable as long as he admits to what he doesn't know and bases his arguments on what he actually does know. But Barrows tries to fake it when he lacks information. I've almost given up watching The Atheist Experience when Barrows is on the roster.
@@donnievance1942 Maybe it's not really my place to butt in since I'm not an evolutionary biologist, but as far as I understand, mutation is just one of the mechanisms of evolution along with migration, and genetic drift. For instance, viruses integrating into our DNA is not considered a mutation. It sounds like you're saying the sole reason for evolution is because of mutations. Correct me if I'm wrong.
@@donnievance1942 "Sliew claimed that the source of genetic variation is mutation. He was correct in that, but Barrows denied that is true. " No, that is not an accurate description of the interaction between Jim and the caller. The caller stated that evolution could be described as mutation being the pathway to changes. Jim clarified that the actual definition was a change in allele frequency. He admitted that mutation was one cause for allele frequency change and that for the sake of the argument, he could go with mutation (1:13:27). So, no, Jim didn't "denied that is true". If you are going to criticize what is being said, the very least you can do is report it accurately. Just based on that snippet we can tell that Jim knows more about the theory of evolution than the caller. But in any case, as some wrote before me, even if the caller was right and Jim totally wrong, that doesn't mean the caller is right about god. Evolution, or lack thereof, is not a doorway to god. "Too bad Barrows doesn't understand evolution well enough to defend it correctly." Listen again, without blinders against Jim this time. "It made me want to scream." There are pills for that, unless weed is legal where you live. "But Barrows tries to fake it when he lacks information." Never seen that, my experience is that Jim, like Dave and most hosts, are very forthcoming with the extent of their knowledge on a given topic. "I've almost given up watching The Atheist Experience when Barrows is on the roster." If you keep mishearing what he says, I can understand you. By the way, his first name is Jim, the fact you keep referring to him as Barrows shows your bias against him.

His whataboutisms and non sec’s were pathetic, while his fake phobia is embarrassing.
Unfortunately I don’t think Catholics would be willing to admit to the issues with the church. I could see someone defending the church on those topics. People still defend the church and when they do believe it, they say it’s just that one guy. Regarding Nick - He says the Universe is a closed system. If that's the case, how did something from outside the universe tinker with everything to create it and the physical constants?
Beneficial mutations: 1 CCR5-Δ32 gives resistance to HIV. 2. Mutation that makes bone iron-hard but weakens teeth. Surviving car crashes and assaults sure sounds beneficial to me. 3. Double muscle mass mutation in myostatin-producing gene, makes humans (and animals) considerably stronger with no known adverse effects. That's just some.
So pleased to hear that Mr. Dillahunty is doing so well. The guy who claims to have written a book was interesting. If his research for his book was as good as that for his argument it is certainly one to avoid.

Where is the intelligent design when you consider that the current human species is a case of pure chance and persistence. Oh, so this god has helped Paul, he's answered prayers, and Paul did bring up rape and murder earlier... So Paul has never prayed for this god to stop the rapes and murders? Why am I not surprised? 🤬
Nick loaded his question. "We don't know of any random, undirected process ..." Why assume anything has to be undirected? For example, formation of a snowflake involves a large decrease in entropy via a natural process. But it's not undirected. So why impose the "undirected" constraint? Natural processes can be very directed.

When basic care is provided by close relatives -- who are fully able to intimidate and even threaten the disabled individual -- a lawyer may be needed to step in and help the person find independent housing and personal care resources.
This was JIm's best show so far.

Sliew-(AU):
The presence of the third molar, or wisdom tooth, is controlled by a gene called PAX9, widely present among primates and some other mammals.
@@donnievance1942 also, sliew didn't seem to be claiming that mutations are a mechanism for evolution, he seemed to be saying that was wrong.
@@donnievance1942 "Sliew claimed that the source of genetic variation is mutation. He was correct in that, but Barrows denied that is true. "
No, that is not an accurate description of the interaction between Jim and the caller.
