"Manufactured" Home Renovation Nightmare | Holmes on Homes 701

- At the base of the Rocky Mountains in Alberta is the home of Yvonne and Tadashi. Their home is refer to as “manufactured”- a house that is built in a factory and then transported in sections to the site and placed on a ready-made foundation.
They decided to add a small addition- Mudroom and covered front porch- and had blueprints drawn and hired a local contracting company.
Everything seemed to be going to plan, until the day the roof went on. The homeowners noticed that the new roof and the old roof didn’t lineup. The homeowners found themselves in a stalemate with the builder, who was demanding the substantial completion payment, when there were obvious major structural flaws still-to-be-addressed. Yvonne and Tadashi offered to let a lawyer hold the payment ‘in trust’ until the work was completed. This was unacceptable to the contractor, who walked away from the job.
Our homeowners found that no other contractor in the area wanted to touch another contractor’s unfinished mess, and so they called the one person they knew who would, Mike Holmes.

Contractor should be charged with attempted murder and given life in federal prison
@@MultiTurbospeed for what he didnt do anything wrong the fall happened 3 yrs later cant blame him
@@delyn13The fall happened due to improper structuring. The fact it lasted 3 years is an amazement of itself and the only person to blame is the one that said it is good enough. Original comment is 100% correct
@@nicka2929 a judge in a courtroom would disagree anything couldve happened in the 3yrs no one knows everyone is assuming the contractor but no evidence
@@delyn13 are you high? One screw basically held the entire structure up and was stated in the episode
@@nicka2929 no im not high the deck lasted 3yrs so it was stable for some time if it wasnt a stable structure everyone would be dead so you really cant blame the contractor the only person to blame for anything is the painter
love how the dumpster company painted the dumpster that is so awesome!
Mr Holmes,,,you & your crew & friends in your community has such a huge blessing to have all of you in it ,,,the decks are beautiful ,thank you to all for being such wonderful people ❤❤❤
What a completely wonderful episode! I had to wipe the tears away several times, would love to have that wonderful lady as my neighbour.
Absolute negligence on the Contractor! He needs to be Sued!!! Thank you Mike and your crew!!!!
Great job Mike and crews. A sad story, but a happy ending!
another great job by Mike and his team. I wished we had more people like this in the world.
This is what keeps me believing in people. When a whole lot of people come together to help someone who has been wronged. Its a shame that contractors can get away with bad work that can harm people and no one is doing anything about the bad work they get away with. The world needs more people like Mike and his crew and all of the good people who help Mike and his crew do the things they do.
God bless all of you
i don't think this is the right episode to match the title or description
Although this is episode 1 of season 7, you are correct. The title and description match episode 2 of season 7, "Rocky Reno".
indeed. Also: Mike says he's in St.John. Does he mean St. John's ?
It looked like st.John's to me but he's mentioning the Bay of Fundy (34:10), so it must actually be St.John, NB then.
Thank you for helping this lady. I think she really needed you…and your hugs. 😊
Original contractor should be liable, but the city inspector had to have signed-off on the job. If no permits were pulled, then the contractor should be in prison. The homeowner should not have to know what permits and/or inspections are required for a renovation. That's part of the "contractor" agreement.
As a side note, if I was a close friend or a relative of our homeowner, the "contractor" would no longer be a problem.............................
Excellent episode! Thank You for sharing. I sure hope the person who built the faulty deck gets his due and won't be able to injure anyone else with his careless shoddy work.
This is one of the best episodes I ever had the pleasure of watching, if not THE best!. So much love!! Well done Mike and the crew.
Great job again from Holmes on Homes ! Solid deck will never go away ! Thanks for the videos ! Mahalo !
Just an incredibly sweet lady. I hope this brought emotional healing to her and her friends.
Killer emotional story and episode.....well done everyone!
The media is brutal. So glad to see you walking and talking.
So sweet making it right for someone who has had a string of bad things God Bless you and your team
Mr Holmes. Thank you for taking care of this lady. Keep bringing light into the world. It's a horrible situation, but I'm glad you helped.😅
Wow! I can't believe that this Asshole contractor did not get sued for building it without the deck going to structure. And then Mike Holmes and crew coming along, overbuild a deck that will not go anywhere. As well as all the other projects that got tackled, with this house.
To have the whole community of St. John come out just WOW! 😲😨🤯
I would of sued him for billions of dollars
He not only should have been sued he should spend some time in jail.
@@MultiTurbospeed i don't know how it is in canada and if it is like the usa where they are an LLC (limited liability company) meaning they pretty much only exist on paper with no assets and when they do something wrong which is alot they simply vanish or at least the llc does and they start a new one the next day for a few $ fee 90% are not even insured or improperly insured
I have seen episodes on YT where people bad-mouth Mr Holmes for overbuilding things. I would much much rather live in an overbuilt structure than a weak one, every day!!
@@jays106 All episodes of Mr Holmes' programs are all in Canada.
All previous people who worked on this house should be charged with attempted murder, including the guy who painted her home and murdered it. WELL DONE to all the new people that contributed to making a happy & safe home.
I don't get how the judge allowed a contractor to get off when he only put in 5 bolts and 4 of them didn't hit structure. And the bolts were too small. How does a judge not side with the woman on such an issue.
Unless I missed that part, she was referring to the painter in court, not the contractor that built the deck. I don’t think that contractor ever went in front of a judge
As others have said, contractors generally form separate companies with little assets to go after. Prison time is very rare even in blatant cases. It's buyer beware and doing due diligence. Difficult for the layperson when it comes to structural issues, which often may not be visible without in-depth inspection like Mike Homes does.
Yup, this made me cry. This was a great episode.
This is the worst episode that has been uploaded and not because of Mike whatsoever. This almost killed 4 people which is why Mike never believes in minimum code. The fact that this deck was installed so poorly yet lasted 3 years is absolutely unbelievable. To whoever installed this seriously come forward and pay the price for your terrible work. If you seriously don't feel any remorse may god have mercy on your soul which in my opinion that isn't even deserving. Mike and crew all of you did an amazing job. Its built over and beyond as to not have the same outcome and obviously that is the point and i hope her friend came around to know that will never happen again
Yes absolutely best wishes for her and her friends. As always God bless Holmes for everything he and his team does.
Quite an emotional episode. Mike Holmes and his working partners are saints.
a very sweet lady....thanks Mike for a great job, well done.
The dishonesty among contractors is legendary. I got 3 quotes from 3 contractors who realized that I know s'thing about construction & trades, & those guys disappeared.
Yep, going through that now. The only ones who talk after are the ones who are either big companies and charge $$$, or smaller contractors who really know their stuff. Everyone else just disappeared.
As a man that made me cry for her. Nice wood work deck mike.
Love me some Holmes on homes💞
Guys, wrong title for the episode. Or wrong episode uploaded...
this
The house looks so beautiful the front and the backyard she went through two tragedies two accidents and God is with you and the angels cuz that was somebody else they would have been gone am glad that you still her God bless you and your family 🙏❤️🙏❤️😊😊
I have a suggestion. Start at season one-episode one and then go forward from there.
very sad that one of her friends will never return to the house. I do understand how that person must feel, but she is blaming/abandoning the homeowner for something she had zero control over
This description is not correct for the episode showing.
very nice job again!
Loved this episode
My eyes were leaking there at the end. Gotta get that looked at...
Wonderful episode.....TERRIBLE circumstances that brought it about. LOTS of failures led to this successful project.
Wrong title on the video though. "Make it Right" when you can.
That's on the city to make sure the homes r safe...also don't build in cold places
That's a beautiful victorian deck.Mike
They all need to sue the contractor for everything Mike is doing to fix it right
This is why I never would trust a deck that is more than 3 ft off the ground. I had 2 pressure treated boards rot 4 years after my contractor built our deck. The boards looked fine and I had sealed them. My foot went through the rotted board. Thankfully I didn't get hurt badly. Twisted my knee. Mike built a deck that should hold a dozen people. Nice job.
Wrong Title.
Yeah. There's a lot of mislabelling on these old episodes ripped from HGTV. This was a crap reno deck on a historic old home in the Maritimes. I remember the original airing of tjis one.
what a great episode
contractors from south America !
Where can one actually find the episode stated in title?
Time for lawsuits......
I'm glad he came there just a Niger of place and time your porch going to look really beautiful when he get finished God bless her in the crew a happy Fourth of July and God bless 🙏🎉🎉😊😊😊
Haha only in Canada , does a court find in favor of the criminal , EH???? This is also why you get at least 3 quotes, ask lots n lots of questions and make sure you only pay 20% to start, don’t pay the rest until job is done. Aldo make sure on the contract there is a start date and a completion date. Never sign contract without those dates…:
what does this have to do with a "Manufactured Home Renovation"? this episode has already been shown more than once in the past.
Lack of care. It's all about getting views. Regularly see it with news articles. Wrong titles, obvious typos, duplicated paragraphs, and more recently AI hallucinations of random gibberish mixed in.
Is this in Canada? I thought they had medical paid for through their taxes.
yes. But I guess they sued because of work/hours/wages lost and possibly life altering handicaps? Plus, all medication is only covered when in hospital, after that it's yours to pay, or your private health insurance with extended coverage.
Mike why?!! You had to want to angle cut the skirts to match the top plate. Im going to just believe that is true and for tv or budget reasons or even time it couldnt be done. Im so sorry i said this.
lovely
That lady has been to hell and back. I mean broken bones from the deck collapse , then as she is healing getting rear ended in a car accident , which re fractures some of those bones .
Remodel work sucks.
Where is St. John in Canada?
Southern most port city in province of New Brunswick.
So goddam beautiful.
mike homes, rush, gordon lightfoot and don cherry. some of Canada's best......what is the worst of Canada???? politics forbid me from saying... but you can!!! I triple dog dare ya!!!!
OMFG don't even try to include mike holmes in that group of people do some research first
@@carlsapartments8931 your statement has no merit without proof, please elaborate.
Imagine if one of the ladies was your wife or mom or sister...Reminds me of; H.L. Mencken - 'Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.' it's sad the the local inspector didn't pick up on the forthcoming disaster...Thank god nobody was killed. It's happened many times since I've been in construction...
Wow....reason why the brick broke is it has to be able to expand and contract. New modern mortar doesn't allow that. So water in the brick freezes and breaks the brick.
Newfoundlanders are great people. They make cookies!
This lady has had too much dumped on her. I'm worried that she lost the house.
Um...is it wrong that I'd like to do some archeology in the basement?
this is in St John New Brunswick, not nfld
Any updates on how she is doing now?
god gave her a second chance ,mike saved her
Stick built homes on a location are obsolete and too expensive. Plus how much of that home is wasted space that needs to be heated and cooled?
For what! Bugs and animals. Even Habitat for Humanity is going with other types of homes that are cheaper to build and more energy efficient. How many people are involved in building a stick built home on a location? Too many. Too many ways to cut corners, and to drive up prices.
I guess this comment landed on the wrong video?
Do it right, except your own properties.
You cant blame the contractor who built the deck 3 YEARS LATER now the painter is a different story i do blame him for painting things wrong
yes you can was a not built right
You can blame him, since it wasn't built properly in the first place.
It was a ticking timebomb and would fail eventually.
With that said, you can blame him, but doesn't mean anything will happen.
@@metroid209 no one can see into the future 3 YEARS come on common sense people
Um....the original contractor didn't anchor the balcony properly. There was very little holding it up. It just chose THAT moment to let go.
@@delyn13 Common sense also means building it right the first time and not cut corners.
Federal Prison is way to polite, I am thinking a Mexican Prison. Maybe a hard labor prison, along with equal physical damage's. Along with full financial compinsation and comfortable living for the rest pf each of their live's forever.
