    You were kind enough to reply, it is only right that I keep you abreast of the situation. The ambient temp is approx 80 so with my set up it drops to approx 70-73 degrees, depending on the outside temp. Keep up the good work, jerry

    Hi, so here’s an update of my set up on lowering the temp around the orchids. Firstly I moved my 9 girls into my a/c bedroom which drops the temp by 6 degrees. I lined them up in a row and placed a whisper quiet fan at one end. That drops the temp a further 3 degrees. Then i put 4 ice packs in a tray in front of the fan between the plants and the fan. That dropped the temp another 3 degrees. Ice honestly would melt too quickly. So total between 8-10 degrees lower which is not enough but hoping that since the plants are grown in ecuador any temp change may trick them. Presently they are in the vegetative phase and doing very very well. I water them once every 5 days with seaweed extract (2 tsps per gal) and once every 10 days again with seaweed and 30-10-10 (1/2 tsp per gal). So now i have to wait.
    Tks again for your videos

      Hi Vicky, I’m sorry it took so long for me to write you back about your comment. I was on vacation and didn’t log onto my RUclips. Thanks for commenting on my video. I bought a little heater but then my electric bill goes sky high, so I'm still looking for some good ideas.

    I live in upstate NY. I have to move my orchids to a shelf with a grow light, away from windows, in the winter. We have long cold dry winters here. Ive had a hard time with my orchids and mold in media and mold in full water culture. I know i over watered them when they were in media. Ive learned a lot since then.
    In your opinion/experience, for colder environments like mine, do you think i should keep my orchirs in full water culture and switch to semi wc, have dry days, or go back to medium?

  • @jerrygruia785
    @jerrygruia785 3 года назад +1

    Forgot to mention all my pots are transparent and fully vented. My media consists of bit of sponge rocks on the bottom then bark, then a bit of sphagnum and finally bark to the top. Now you have a full picture. Lol.

    Hi. I am very new to orchids but always had a soft heart on orchids but always aff repaid of trying to grow them, last few months I've got a few pholanopsis orchids I just love these plants i am building a 6 x 3 metres green house the good part is I live in Melbourne Australia and we are in the south so temperatures are very cooler in summer we do get hot days above high 30s few days in a row then drops to 15° deg. What would you recommend as a first time newbie on orchids what do I need in my green house, at the moment I've got them in my garage I've got them near a luver window which I live open just a little for ventilation I use part smagnamoss and part orchid mix. The orchids mix I buy I am not to happy with it but it's the only thing I have for now till I set myself up, i love pholanopsis orchids but I am also into Adenium desert rose plants slowly getting the bug to grow mango from seeds. As you can see I am new at this but willing to learn, i look at orchids videos I save them go back to them if am not sure about something I'll take any advise. Thank you Kindly for your information.

      Hi Mario, I can't answer right off because I'll have to do some research to see what grows in your climate (I'm not too familiar with Melbourne). I'll save your question and get back with you in a few days. Just to not leave you without an answer, from what I can see, you are in a privilege climate. Most all orchids will adapt well to those temperatures, as long as they aren't in direct sunlight. When you buy your orchids, stay away from "cooler-growing" ones, that live in higher altitudes. Most other orchids should do great, but I'll confirm later on.

      @@Orchideria thank you for your prompt reply I appreciate your help, more information i have better understanding of these gorgeous flowers I've always been a fan of orchids but to scared to try as I did few years a go and I kept distrying these flowers not understanding how they grow was my mistake not having time for them was down side as well. Now that I am retired I've got plenty of time last few years I've been getting back to flowers, what started me off was video clips on RUclips in Asia on Adenium desert rose plants how they trained those huge roots and giant trunks, then slowly going back to orchids, I've also attempted growing mangos from seeds with good results still 7 to 8 inch plants and attempting on seeding cherry tree from seeds that's still on the works. Here is part of my story hope you can help with the information. Thank you Kindly.

      Hi Mario, When I lived in Brazil, we planted mango seeds in our backyard. I revisited those trees four years ago and now they are massive. It's sad to compare the mangoes to the ones you can buy in the supermarket here in the USA. I've never tired a desert rose plant. They are beautiful, indeed. You should blog about it and share your story! :) I still haven't had time to research orchids in a greenhouse to actually get back to you with better information, but I haven't forgotten.

    I’m starting with one and learned about lowering the temp tonight. Our little trailer has no heat at night so it goes to colder temps. I can put it outside and lower it to 30, and even add ice around the base, but not near the plant. I’m just afraid of lowering it too much.

    • @Orchideria
      @Orchideria  2 года назад

      Hi Judith, I’m sorry it took so long for me to write you back about your comment. I was on vacation and didn’t log onto my RUclips. Thanks for commenting on my video. I appreciate it and was glad it helped. 30 is a little low for temperatures and most orchids won't tolerate it. If you have a Phalaneopsis, then definitely try to keep it by the warmest place in the house. You only need to add ice around the base of the plant if you are in an extremely warm climate and are trying to cool it down. Most the time, it's not necessary. In fact, I would stay away from ice all together. I explain why in this video: ruclips.net/video/Koin_T11w-M/видео.html In all, I wish you the best in your orchid care!

      Hi Tara, You're most welcome! I've lived most my life overseas so I know how frustrating it is to have to pause a video and get a chart to compare. I'm pretty confortable now with the F/C but the inches and feet still get me. I still prefer using metric.
