  • Dwarf or "star" aloes are becoming hugely popular. Succulent collectors like them because they stay small and are perfect for pots. No two cultivars are alike, yet all share similarities.
    These diminutive aloes have intriguing textures, patterns and colors. Many have teeth that contrast with the green or blue of the leaves. No worries, these are not sharp or spiny succulents!
    In this video you'll see two dozen unique and intriguing dwarf aloes. You'll also watch me create a colorful pot-full with desirable varieties from the leading source: Oasis Water Efficient Gardens nursery near San Diego (owned by Altman Plants).
    And on the corresponding page of my site, you'll find a gallery of dwarf aloe cultivars with IDs, along with must-know's for sun exposure, temperature, propagation, flowering, pests, and---importantly---how to keep colors vivid. There you'll also find a list of best online sources.

    I think these dwarf Aloes are so beautiful and have the most interesting textures and colors. I find them easy to grow indoors in the winter and outside on my balcony in warmer weather in the northeast.

    I am thrilled to see my Aloe Blizzard being one of the stars of your most recent video. I blush to say, a very dear friend gifted me with the unique hand crafted pot. The pairing of these two lovelies makes my 💖🎶

    Thank you for a great video display of these lovely aloes. Is there a common definition of "dwarf" aloes?

    • @QueenofSucculents
      @QueenofSucculents  5 месяцев назад

      Great Q, Loriejean, thanks. I'll add this to the corresponding page of my site: Dwarf aloes average a few inches in diameter and seldom attain more than 8. Most are showy cultivars that appeal to collectors and do best in pots. In comparison, landscape aloes (which range from about a foot tall to trees) have larger, thicker leaves. Wedge-shaped leaves of small landscape aloes, such as A. nobilis and A. brevifolia, are about half an inch thick at the stem end, and have tough skin with prickly margins.

    These are so colorful...I've known them also as mosaic aloe. The Home Depot near my San Francisco location carries many of these Altman Plants selections and mention Kelly Griffin hybridization on the label.

    Debra, how can I clean up my cactus that look so messy after leaves and little twigs stick to the spines.

    • @QueenofSucculents
      @QueenofSucculents  5 месяцев назад

      I use long-handled tweezers to groom cacti in pots. If it's in the garden, use a blower, or wait until it needs to be watered and hose it off (spray upward, not downward).

    Hi Debra. My mix is 50% cocopeat 50% perlite. So it is very well draining and well aerated. But because of the coco, it retains moisture quite well. It takes about 5-7days to totally bone dry. Is that level of moisture ok? Or will my succulents’ root rot?

    • @QueenofSucculents
      @QueenofSucculents  5 месяцев назад

      I assume by "succulents" you mean dwarf aloes, because that's where you left the message. I wouldn't, especially since "cactus mix" potting soil is comparatively inexpensive and readily available. Coir and peat do retain moisture, but if they dry out, they shrink and harden, which inhibits root growth and aeration. A crumbly mix is best. That said, you can get away with using moisture-retaining soil for certain succulents, notably tropicals. See them on my site: debraleebaldwin.com/types-of-succulents-succulents-florida-hawaii-tropics/
