Furono Kinderszenen e Album fur die Jugend di Robert Schumann a ispirare Čajkovskij a iniziare la composizione del suo Album per bambini nel 1878. Dedicò il set a suo nipote Vladimir Davidoff (Bobik) che aveva 7 anni. «Da tempo mi dico che sarebbe bene contribuire, nei limiti delle mie forze, all'arricchimento della letteratura pianistica per l'infanzia, che è piuttosto povera. Vorrei comporre una serie di piccoli pezzi molto facili con titoli attraenti come fece Schumann". Scrisse alla sua mecenate Mme von Meck e, In meno di una settimana , aveva completato i 24 pezzi del suo Children's Album. Come le opere di Schumann, non c'è niente di infantile nella musica, piuttosto mostra una mente adulta che comprende totalmente la visione del mondo di un bambino, insieme a una tenera nostalgia.
L'Op.39 di Čajkovskij si dimostrò così popolare che in seguito anche i compositori russi composero opere per bambini. Nel periodo sovietico Prokofiev compose la sua Musica per bambini (1935), musica meravigliosamente fresca, molto lontana dagli aridi testi didattici che la maggior parte dei bambini aveva per lo studio del pianoforte. Nel 1947 Shostakovich compose i suoi Children's Pieces per sua figlia Galina. Un po' più strettamente legati ai brani didattici tradizionali che la Musica per bambini di Prokofiev, tuttavia infondono in modo piuttosto affascinante la nozione accademica di una felice "maggiore" e di una triste "minore" capovolgendola in Una allegra storia in mi minore e una triste storia in Sol maggiore.

Sergej Sergeevič Prokof'ev (1891 - 1953) è stato un compositore, direttore d'orchestra e pianista russo vissuto nel periodo sovietico. Talento precoce, dopo aver suscitato clamore nella Russia zarista per le sue opere ardite e innovative e pur avendo dovuto in seguito affrontare le critiche del regime stalinista, Prokof'ev mantenne sempre la sua indipendenza artistica, staccandosi da ogni scuola e rifiutando qualsiasi etichetta. La sua musica, conservando un'assoluta integrità d'ispirazione, riunisce in sé ogni aspetto della cultura novecentesca, dalla fiducia nel progresso e nell'uomo, alle problematiche esistenziali, al richiamo nostalgico del passato, alla sensibilità mistica, all'atteggiamento ironico e dissacratorio.
Antonio Castagna si è diplomato presso l’ISTITUTO MUSICALE PAREGGIATO “G. Braga” di Teramo e, successivamente, si è perfezionato con il M° Franco Medori e con il M° Carlo Zecchi.
Con il pittore NINO DI SIMONE, nel 1986, ha ideato la performance di “MUSICA E PITTURA” sui “Quadri di una esposizione“ di M. Mussorgsky; ha quindi tenuto numerosi concerti e recitals in Italia e all’estero (GERMANIA, SVEZIA, BELGIO, OLANDA, EMIRATI ARABI UNITI) per prestigiose Istituzioni culturali. Ha partecipato più volte a programmi radio-televisivi RAI.
Nel 1999 suona in ARGENTINA e in COREA del SUD per l’Università di Taejon .
Nel 2000, oltre che essere nel cartellone ufficiale della XXI Stagione dei Concerti “Primo Riccitelli” di Teramo come solista, ha effettuato una tournée in GERMANIA, SVIZZERA e AUSTRIA suonando a Salisburgo nell’ambito dei Salzburger Schlosskonzerte. Nel mese di ottobre ha suonato a Boston (USA) per la Dante Alighieri.
Nel 2001 é stato nuovamente invitato a Salisburgo e nel mese di giugno ha suonato a Parigi, presso l’Istituto Italiano di Cultura, nell’ambito della manifestazione “Hommage à LA FIGLIA DI JORIO” organizzata dalla Provincia di Pescara.
Ha suonato a Lanciano per la XXX Estate Musicale Frentana nell’ambito della “1a Rassegna Pianistica Errico D’Amico” e quindi quindi a Basilea per il Consolato Generale d’Italia.
Su invito dell'Istituto Italiano di Cultura, ha suonato in BRASILE, a Rio de Janeiro, nel prestigioso Museo Nazionale delle Belle Arti.
Nel mese di novembre 2010 ha suonato, con il Trio di Teramo, a Filadelfia (USA) nell’Auditorium Marshall dell’Haverford College, nella Sala Lincoln dell’Union League e nel Consolato Generale d’Italia.
E’ stato Direttore Artistico di importanti rassegne musicali svoltesi in Abruzzo.
E' stato Direttore, dal 1996 al 2012, dell’I.S.S.M “Gaetano BRAGA“ di Teramo. E' stato docente di Pianoforte nei Conservatori di Foggia e di Teramo.

Enjoying this jaunty march again, you played the dotted rhythmic with so much precision and feel. The articulation between the rhythmic notes in the opening bars and slurred notes in the B section which need to sound and feel different was perfect! Ciao Antonio, ti fa onore dedicare il tuo tempo e talento a diffondere la letteratura pianistica per bambini.
Credo che sia molto importante far capire che molte opere non siano solo dedicate ad una nicchia di esperti o specializzati ma che questa musica sia destinata a tutti e anche alle famiglie che hanno dei piccoli. Mi immagino il periodo storico e queste composizioni che venivano dedicate ad una parte di pubblico molto ristretto e che avevano la possibilità di ascoltare queste composizioni diverse da quelle classiche. Immagino anche Sergej Sergeevič Prokof'ev che propose questa musica in un periodo storico molto delicato tra l'epoca Zarista e avvento del periodo Stalinista nell'Unione Sovietica.
Il tuo nipotino Antonio è cresciuto molto ora.

Prokofiev was quite the composer and so intelligent, also a world class chess player! His very distinctive style is such a blessing to the music world and your performance of this beautiful children's piece is fabulous!!! So interesting the way it can stray from the main line and harmony, but without ever really losing a tonal center. Not many composers can do this. Also, not every student understands it. I remember being "tortured" with this music in my youth, but grew to love it as I got older and more sophisticated in my own studies. However, I never grew to love Bartok, which was more atonal and did not resonate with me. I love your perfect approach to this music with it's staccato, quick leaps, silly cadence, and key change. It is once again a perfect performance that tells a story and even your own youth is showing :-) Your grandson is adorable....pure joy on his face! Thank you Antonio! ~Jackie

I didn't know that Prokofiev was also a chess player. I find this aspect very interesting. I'm glad you enjoyed my instrumental performance of this signature piece.
These compositions are intended for young students who do not always appreciate them.

@@AntonioCastagna You're welcome Antonio!! I am so happy that this piece resonated with you to capture the essence of your wonderful grandson!! I laughed at your comment about Bartok. My God, it was horrible! For my senior studies, I had a VERY tough Hungarian teacher. She wore a beehive hairdo that was over-sprayed and used to BANG her pencil on the piano, screaming "time, time"!!!! I struggled with Bartok's extreme dissonance and was forced to play his Romanian and Hungarian dances, Bagatelles and a few others (because she liked them), but I did it (for some recitals), never to return to a single one of his pieces later! They sound like nails on a chalkboard to me! So many other pieces I'd love to play now by many of my other favorite Classical composers, but my hands won't let me :-( I do what I can. Di ritorno da qualche giorno di relax al mare, mi accingo all'ascolto di questo brano di Prokofiev, che non conoscevo.
Un brano molto breve e davvero particolare e al tempo stesso gradevole.
Mi piace il modo in cui lo interpreti e ritengo molto interessante il tuo accostare - nel video - immagini in bianco e nero (che fanno concentrare chi guarda e ascolta sul compositore russo) e immagini a colori (che ci riportano invece all'attualità delle feste natalizie e al tuo splendido nipote).
L'ascolto di questo pezzo mi fa altresì riflettere sulla musica russa, sul conflitto russo-ucraino, su come la musica non abbia confini e su come gli artisti russi (così come gli atleti), siano stati ingiustamente messi da parte a causa delle decisioni di una sola persona, le cui azioni sciagurate si riflettono negativamente su tanti aspetti della realtà.
La tua esecuzione, dunque, va al di là degli aspetti puramente musicali, perché fornisce a tutti noi che ti guardiamo e ti ascoltiamo numerosi spunti.
