Dang, that was really well explained and great to know! For the example it would have been cool to see how it actually does look the same but learning the limitations is important too… Great vid man!
Great video! I guess I wish I would have wanted to see the local adjustments applied correctly at 10:42 to see how close the images matched up in the end
Not necessarily. I mean, LUTs can work wonderful without revealing how they were created or what they do. But as mentioned in the video, making solid LUTs requires some serious work and I definitely agree, there are many bad apples out there.
Nice explanation, Eric. I've used the LUT creator in Color Finale for basic Log to Rec 709 conversion. Works somewhat simpler than what you've described. But it does cost $$. Love to see you do some Color Finale vids. Understood if you don't, since it would be creating free tutorials for them.
That's not necessarily the case I would create tutorials on that. I know colour finale is a fantastic plugin and very powerful, but currently, I don't use it and I try to keep my videos as bare-bones as possible. I'd argue Final Cut Pro has all you really need. So, I want to get the basics right before diving into the more niche and advanced things. :)
One quick stupid question: what is the widget top left on your screen? And congratulations! It's the first time ever I see a desktop as clean as mine 😂 Today, I am using Cinema Grade and I think it's a great tool. Though, with what you're teaching me, I might create more looks on my own. Thanks
Would love to use this software! Unfortunately my Mac says that the your software needs to be updated in order for it to open. Any tips on bypassing that? Thanks!
Great tip! I tried to export a Capture One style this way, but I'm not sure what to do with color spaces. The exported neutral file has no ICC profile, so it's interpreted as sRGB by default, but I can also pick 'neutral'. I can export as sRGB, generic RGB, or AdobeRGB. Any idea what would make the most sense for a videoLUT?
Glad it helped! As for the colour space, if you use sRGB to create a LUT for rec709 you're good to go. They are very similar, so you shouldn't notice any colour shifts. I'd have to test it thoroughly but I believe there is nothing to be gained from choosing Adobe RGB in Capture One. Hope that helps. :)
@@iamericlenz Thanks! I ended up using ‘VideoHD’ as the input profile (which is probably Rec.709) and sRGB as the output profile. This should ensure that the styles are applied correctly to the input, and the only downside of sRGB for the output would be a change in contrast due to the different gamma curve, but that is easily correctable!
I'm trying to create a LUT in a wide gamut color space for rec 2020 HLG and It Never looks right, it works for rec 709 but not HDR. I'm looking to create an HDR LUT for 8K 12 Bit Raw and output as 8K Rec 2020 HLG export, any tips? Edit: I may have found the issue, In FCP for the project where the HALD is in go to the inspector for the Color Space Override and set it to Rec 2020 HLG instead of OFF and I think that works.
No, I would not use the LUT you created even though it might seem to work. Creating LUTs for HDR is not trivial. I haven’t looked into it properly because it’s super complex - and how to make that stuff work in FCP is a whole other story. The LUT-generator creates LUTs for SDR only. So again, even though it might seem to work, I’d stay clear of the tool and the LUTs for HDR purposes.
@@iamericlenz That's a bummer to know and I did find it incredibly difficult to find more information on the topic so it makes sense. Thank you for the Reply!
Question. I tried downloading this last week. I am using Sonoma 14.0 and it will not allow me to open the file. I get the same “cannot check for malicious software” and it will not let me bypass. How do I get past this wall?

Wow. Way to flex on all of us mere mortals Eric. This video made me realize…. There’s a LUT more to learn 😉
Right on! :D Haha, thank you Dylan! :D

Great point! I could have done this but didn’t think of it at the time!
Boom! Just tried this and it works! 😃 Now I have my lut loaded on blackmagic app as a preview. Loving it! Thanks very much!
Glad it helped! I'll probably do the same today with my Atomos! :D
Shows you exactly why a lot of LUTs online, don’t really explain how or what they are created for or from.

Sorry to hear that! You should be able to open it with right-click and then select open. So, double-clicking it won't work. I hope that helps!

Right-click and select open. This usually works. :)
@@iamericlenz I will try again tonight. It seemed to only open using the Terminal. Not having actual location and application to create the LUts
