Aang essentially needs the Avatar state to break free himself from the yakone grip of bloodbending. Without the Avatar state he would be over.

He doesn't even know about raava at all. He was even clueless about his origin. Poor thing.

The spirits in korra were way inferior. Raava and Vaatu are so western interpretation of good and evil despite the avatar world being based on eastern mythology as it was in atla spirit designs in lok are also lame, they are just paint blobs and generic energy monsters. Pokemon spirit portals undermine Aang and Iroh's spiritual aptitude of having enough focus to access the spirit world if a spirit is angered it has to be appeased to restore it to its pacified form , not perform a glowy spirit dance(spirit bending)
The legends of Korra did a really great job on explaining everything we needed to know about the Avatars True nature. I don't like that ATLA didn't explain a damn thing about the Avatar's origins. It was like a human with white glowing eyes who can bend all 4 elements and task with a job of maintaining balance to the world. It was Boring.
