It's like a super brief Image Grand Design
You guys need to go to Singapore Comic Con. Singapore is one of my favorite places on earth. They like comics out there and there is a lot of stuff to see and do there. Also, the food is incredible
The street angel splash page was a very cool redo of the Lone Wolf and cub story meet the Buddha , kill the Buddha. Deep cut all of this book. Amazing.
"A Contract with Todd" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Priceless! I had a book with IMAGE for 3 issues during the original B&W experiment back in what, 1997? No complaints. I'm an Image trivia answer now.
It's interesting how poorly the 90s Image aesthetic has aged. However, it still hits that sweet spot for the 8-15 year old boy demographic. I was a couple of years too old to ever get into Image (I was already in my artsy-fartsy Caliber/Vertigo phase). However, my 14 year old son is discovering 90s Image and Valiant now and prefers them to any modern comic.
90's image aesthetics was always a joke to real artists. You can see a video of stan lee mocking these ridiculous designs from rob liefeld&todd mcfarlene but stan's passive aggressive jabs seemingly go over their heads. 90s image is basically today's deviant art Sonic OCs. I suppose, the grimdark characters do appeal to the young teen demographic but they don't have to suck. Kratos from God of war would fit right into the 90s Image Comics but he actually has character depth.
I never got into comics as an edgy teen in the 90s but when it came to Spawn that was my comic hero. My cousin preferred Savage Dragon & was inspired to get a mohawk like his mohawk like fins or spines. Now I am 40 & getting back into Spawn with the Compendiums & the new Gunslinger, King, & Scorched spin offs
Oh man, I would love if Barry Tan did a 1963 bootleg with some folks, maybe even Don Simpson, to finish off the series. Those 1963 pages looked amazing
Barry Tan is simply amazing, the best!
I'm proud to say that I've gotten to know and collaborate with Barry a lot this last year or two, including on the Sky Solo story in this book. He lives in Singapore, where access to having a RUclips account is complicated and this video dropped in the middle of the night, but he's awake and excited and his phone is blowing up. The attention is well deserved. The bad news is he only made 25 copies of Contraband Comic Cavalcade and the prospects for a wider print run are low. The good news is, you can buy a book with his art as the cover and a lot more of his excellent work inside, including a version of that Sky Solo story seen here with a few little details changed to keep us on the right side of IP law and getting artists like him compensated for his work. The book features a murderer's row of great artists who all know each other from following CK, and it's pretty impressive, if I do say so myself...

I still have a guilty pleasure and love for the beginning of Image Comics. Brigade, Bloodstrike, and Prophet is still my favorites from this era.
Holy shit incredible pages!
Thanks!
This comic really really is impressive. So much love and intention!
A Contract with Todd is my new band name.
If anyone ever finds this book for sale, please post the link!
I could sure go for a whole series of that tokusatsu Spawn
For me, it's U for Union.
Those cosmic Kirby-esque pages are drop dead gorgeous!
Shut up and take my money. Seriously, where can we cop, Barry?
I don’t want to speak for Barry, but I know he hadn’t intended to print more than what he already had for these. You can, however, get an altered version of that “1963” story and more of his work, including the cover, in this book, created by a group of people who met because of CK:

This is a killer bootleg! I hate that I missed out on owning a copy, but thankfully I can at least read it here!
You guys should have Ian Chalgren on I need a behind the scenes look behind the bootleg process!!!
Another vote for this!

At 12:18 into the video, the bottom left panel of the left page with the Violator/Clown standing in front of the brick wall--does that wall graffiti say "Cartoon Kayfabe"? Is that a shoutout to you guys? lol
