Greetings from Scotland! This is 15yo Diana singing in an amazing Russian competition "You are Super" for abandoned/disadvantaged children because Diana spent some years in an orphanage. She is a natural dramatic contralto (so VERY low) which is rare in females but exceptionally rare in someone so young! Diana was born way over in the far eastern side of Russian in Arsenyev, 160 km northeast of Vladivostok. Her adoptive family moved to Togliatti, in western Russia near the Volga River. After Igor Krutoy (one of the judges in this competition) gifted Diana an apartment in Moscow she moved there and still lives there! It makes it easier for her to study at GITIS International, the largest and oldest theatrical State Institution in Russia. Go take a look at her youtube channel - "Diana Ankudinova Official" She is now 17yo (18yo on 31st May) and she sings in 6 languages, Russian, English, French, Spanish, German and Arabic and she's only 17!!! Short compressed life story so far - "Diana's birth mum beat her badly, broke her collarbone and tried to drown her, then threw her out in the cold - at 3yo!! Diana was her only child after 12 failed pregnancies, you would think she would have loved her? A passing relative took Diana to an orphanage because they thought she was retarded (she cried continuously - not surprisingly!) Her new foster mum Irina worked at the orphanage and Irina's daughter said that if Irina didn't adopt Diana then she WOULD when she was old enough! :) SO Irina adopted her at 5yo. Diana could barely speak so they took her to a voice therapist who discovered Diana had a great singing voice - the rest is history. Irina and her family are immensely proud of her of course and Diana loves them. They had to leave Arsenyev (way over in the far east of Russia) to escape Diana's horrible birth mum who would not stop being horrible to her. They moved to Tolyatti then when the famous Igor Krutoy gifted Diana a Moscow flat, they now live there. She is an inspiration to us all. Diana perfectly knows the technique of yodel, for her voice switching as easy as breathin She is a singer with incredibly velvet contralto, the range grows with her. She is 17 years old, she knows a lot about vocals, but how many discoveries in her talent await us all in the future! The voice will grow with her. Diana continues to learn and improve. Diana has a "black belt" in vocals! This is our Russian treasure - a musical diamond! The singing of Diana is always magic, shamanism! At the vocal contest of the Russian NTV channel for children with a difficult fate “You are super!” Diana won at age 14. She sang a fragment of this song there. Two years later, the channel announced the super season of the competition. Diana participated in it for the second time and won the Grand Prix. Diana turns 18 in May and was only 15 in this performance. Diana's voice is very unique. It's a one of a kind really. I've seen music teachers say she sings in multiple frequencies while everyone else can only manage one at a time so that is why we hear something extra in her vocal color. That dark, rich, powerful tone is just something God gave her. Whatever the deal, she's mesmerizing and fascinating. She has dozens of covers and is now producing original content. She is comfortable singing everything from Russian Folk to James Brown's It's a Man's World. My first reaction to hearing Diana was much like yours. Frankly, it still amazes me and makes me pause when I hear her sing even after hearing her hundreds of times.
And...Two more souls captured into Diana's universe! You two were trying to understand..,.there is no explaination. However, If you both wore headsets/earphones, You will hear more than what you thought you heard. There is so much happening with her vocal abilities... It allows her to sing very dramatic/powerful, very (I mean VERY) deep, very dark, very rich. Second, she has a spectacular larynx. It is a gift from God, and others have called it the Eighth Wonder of the World. Third, she is polyphonic, which means she can produce multiple harmonics within her voice at the same time. This is what allows her to sound like two people at once. (more below) When you add all that up you basically get a person who who creates her own auto-tune. She doesn't need electronic auto-tune. She IS her own auto-tune. And the effect when you hear her is totally mind-blowing. It's like she's singing right through you, like a sword straight into your soul. Literally NOBODY else on the planet has a voice like hers. She's not one in a million, she's one in seven billion.

Sometimes, starting out with Wicked Game as the first introduction to her (and in this competition) can be somewhat confusing. Let me put a little context to the performance. Diana participated in this show two years running. The first year (she was 14 ) was done the year before this performance (the second year, which could be described as a champions show). Her actual 'audition' performance was singing in French the pop song by Indila "Derniere Danse (Last Dance). Like this song, NTV forces a lot of editing hoops to jump through, but it's precious because of the judges reactions. I'd definitely encourage you to watch it, but really the best version is the longer one done after the competition (which you can find in the comment section of the video of her introducing herself). From that list you can see the order of the performances she did for each season. So suffice it to say, by the time she sang Wicked Game, the judges and audience were very familiar with her and why the production & setting was so evolved. She is in the process of creating a crowd sourced album, which last evening (our time) she dropped the first single called Happiness (Счастье which can be found on Spotify). She has a few songs written for her that you can find on that discography list. Almost all of her performance (since she was six) have been backing tracks - my personal wish is to see her perform more with a band which would present her in a more organic environment. But she's still young (17) and in school and giving small venue concerts in Moscow, so her plate is pretty full at the moment, but that is something I hope for. Oh, the answer to your question toward the end regarding her vocal range is called Contralto.

She is varying only an octave and a half but using so many techniques...including the polyphonic ("two voices") you noticed that it's absolute masterclass of contralto techniques.
