Still got mine got it from Traffords Catologe back in the old days, 1974 i think it cost £32, thousands of hours, hundreds of pounds of fish and she is as good as new. i only use her now with a light ABU 9" spinning rod. Brilliant reel, great vid, well done pal.
Thanks for this guide, I didn't need to grease the reel as it had already been done. However, I did need to know how the mechanism fits back together after accidently knocking it out. Your video helped me fit the reel back together. Thank you.
Those are very nice reels; fun to cast with as well. I have the 505 with two pickup pins (though mine had one missing). I enjoy doing the kind of maintenance as you do and whenever I cannot find replacement parts I try to make them, which is what I did with mine. They sure don't make them like that anymore. When I was a teenager, back in the late sixties, I bought several new Mitchell 300s they came with two spools, I never thought much of keeping the box beck then; what a mistake. Today you can still find them (all models) but they want a good price for them. I must say they are still worth it. The Garcia Mitchell came from Sweden, but a lot of good reels also came from Made in Japan; not sure if we (USA) send the parts to them to be assembled or if they actually made the reels I'm not sure. If they did make them, they sure made some great stuff. Thanks for sharing this video; I'm looking to get another Abu automatic either the one you presented 506 or even the 520.
Bought this on flee bay and this video was very useful. Thanks. I do believe there is a way to remove the anti back wind as my uncle had one in the 70s and did it to his thx again.
I know its been 3 years now but Ken Giles describes how to do it in his chapter 'River Fishing' in the 1975 book entitled "Match Angling" By John Carding. (Sealey Service & Co. ISBN 0 85422 115 8)
Hello all, Yank here from Idaho who just purchased a very nice 505. No owners manual, what is the approx capacity in meters or yards of 8 lb test monofilament line?
I just recieved a 506 I bought on ebay.Very nice condition and from 1981 according to the stamp. I am currently browsing the net to see everything is in order with the device. The schematics I found suggest that this reel only has one pin to take the line. In your video I also only see one pin. But there seems to be provisions for two.The one I recieved has only one pin. That is how it should be,right?
+MainsOnTheOhmsRange Yes it should only have 1 pin, it also only shows 1 pin in my parts diagram/instruction leaflet, my friend had an Abu reel not sure which one possibly the 504 which i think had 2 pins. Hope this helps, have you usde the reel yet ?
lensman2online That is nice to know. Thanks for the answer. No, I haven`t had a chance to use it yet. The weather is just too bad. Lots of rain and the water is still too cold and rapid.
The red lip on the spool is a thin strip of cloth, which should prevent the line from going behind the spool, it acted like a gasket be he honest it never really worked
@@lensmanonline hello, I write from Italy ... this trick is not known to us, we have never seen it. I have 5 abu 507 mk1 and would like to try. How is it done?
@@antoniopapini2572 the red cloth gasket came already attached to the spool, its not something that I added, or even when manufactured. On older reels the cloth will disintegrate with age and disappear, I'm quite lucky that this reel still has it although it's slowly going rotten.
I have a 505 that has stopped working. i have followed all your instructions but the cog with the teeth on it where you remove the screw to see in the back, is not turning. Any clues please?
Sorry can't really help, have you removed all of the gearing e.t.c, maybe the shaft that connect's the crank to the gear has broken or lossened, sorry i can't be of anymore help
THIS IS NOT DRAG!!! Just look schematics , this is simple ball bearing to make handle turn freely when drag is tide. Drag inside on main gear. Its very important on old reels to lubricate all turning points for example like handle axle, you can lubricate from handle side just drop light oil inside gap between brass bushing and axle and turn handle until oil penetrates. this is if you dont want to take apart very simple reel and lubricate drag. good luck and look schematics.
Yes, by turning on the handle screw- nut with spring, when you screw clockwise you pull axle to the handle and add pressure on drag discs located on the main gear and under it. please look schematics, its very very simple reel- very hard to make mistake because all materials in this reel top. Dont have this exact model but have other million reels, use light oil like sewing machine oil or similar.

Elegant reel, one wonders why they aren't more readily available in today's market.

Thanks for this. I wanted to find some advice on long overdue maintenance on my 501. This is very useful.

Bought this model yesterday and found this really useful so thank you.
Interesting video nicely made, thanks. A comment though, are you chewing gum? That's the negative, not terribly pleasant hearing chewing.

What brand of chewing gum are you munching? It sounds very tasty.

Thanks for the clarification, can the drag be adjusted ?

Why would you chew gum whilst making a RUclips tutorial!!?
Why not
God awful chewing sounds yuck
Thanks for your kind comment
Mmmmm not stripped down at all. Just take side panel off and moves grease around
I can see it does not have a clutch bearing , another low quality build
Trolls suck!
Are you in the middle of eating your tea ??
You should have waited till you'd finished the meal, before making the video,,, 🧆🍔🍟
