Hi Alone, first, I want to thank you for the great shoutout. In my 76 years in Alaska, I have tried everything under the Sun, But, for these many years, I have become immune to them. They are a pain when you try to sleep, they always go for the ears, lol. I hope you have a wonderful Summer.

Glad you like the bug zapper. One other thing I do is fill a spray bottle with cooking oil (the cheapest) and where standing water is caught (puddles, tires, bird baths, lawn ornaments) or items I can’t move (55gal drums with recessed tops). I lightly spray the oil. It thins out and keeps mosquito larvae from being able to breathe. They die and the birds and fishes like the snack.

Kenai no longer on bed he is going to be so lonely😢. Lol me without my doggies on bed I rather get bitten. We have very dangerouse ones in South Africa you get a illness called malaria. We sleep with fans on most of the time summer or winter. What works for us in my language kaki bos its a type of bush and citronella oil we spray it everywhere.

when I lived in Brazil I never used mosquito netting, just pulled the bedsheet up over my head and ran a fan. sometimes you could still hear them buzzing around but that worked for me. never really had a problem in Alaska but I lived in Fairbanks and Anchorage and they weren't as bad in town.

For the mosquito repellent for humans I have one word: Picaridin. It comes from the piperine, found in the group of plants used to produce black pepper. An Army soldier recommended to me because I am a mosquito magnet and the bites gets really bad all around my body just after a small gardening session. I buy mine at the place with the A. I hate chemical repellents so I use this and it works wonders. I hope it does help.

Mosquitos are truly annoying. The Noseeums are the worst variety here in Southern Indiana. The assortment of ticks are also challenging here. I've been using Lavender oil to protect myself, but your homemade spray looks interesting too. I want to try that also. Grissom says "woof".

    • @AloneinRemoteAlaska

Hi Beth! I use lavender body soap, and my homemade laundry detergent has lavender essential oil in it too. Yet, the mosquitos still come around if I don't have other deterrents on. I even use a citronella soap for my hands, so if I forget to reapply the essential oil spray I have something on that will help to repel them. I wonder though, if you are having success with the lavender, what type of lavender it might be? Maybe the essential oil in my soaps and detergents are a different variety that might not be as scented. 😕

When I lived in Houston I fished a few bayous in the area.Well if you live anywhere in Houston you know the mosquitoes are big enough to put a saddle on them and they bite like you're getting a vaccine shot. I don't remember who it was that told me to use Skin so Soft by Avon. I bought some and to my surprise it worked great. Now this was the original Skin so Soft back in the 80's and I found out it contained pepper or something like that .Avon now has a product that is strictly for mosquitoes now. I have not tried it but it looks like they finally got smart. Good luck.

I battle carpenter bees that bore into the wood in the eaves of my porches and home. Do you have problems with these? They make sawdust everywhere and jokes. I did get a few traps homemade of wood at top with a hole and a screw-in bottle where they crawl in and become trapped. They work pretty well.
Mosquitos here are a problem in the smokies.
I remmber growing up in Adirondacks and the black flies were awful! We’d wear nets like yours and while canoeing , many would puff on a cigar.
Your solutions make a lot of sense to me and I appreciate the recipe for the homemade repellents.
Great to see another video from you! I know you’re getting anxious about spring and summer!
Perhaps you can purchase a few tomato plants etc and put in 5 gallon buckets outside your door to have a little free sh stuff. Im enjoying the buckets, even plastic tubs. Squash, beans, cukes, tomatoes, radish, lettuce. I say that because I know this year is not garden year, but we all get antsy for doing a little this time of year.

Seems no matter where we live in this world, from the cold of Alaska to the tropics of Australia be are bedevelled by the bloodsucking mozzies !!!! They're out in force every summer here in Queensland AUS also. We yse the same methods as you do and ALL our WINDOWS & DOORS are MOZZIE SCREENED. I just forced myself to re-screen the 2 frint windows that my cat ran up 2yrs ago. The cat has since gone but the screens were in desperate need of re-doing. Not the most difficult of jobs IF youre a healtgy individual, which I'm not. I've had to live with back pain from lower back injury for 25yrs, plus sciatica . Does NOT make repairing fly,/mosquito screens a pleasant experience but one does what one has to to survive.
Im not surprised your mixture including GERANIUMS warns off mozzies LOL i hate the smell of tgem. Mother had them in her flower beds whwn wexwere kids and altho the flowers were pretty i could not stand their aroma !!!!
What a delightful array of gifts you received in the mail. Im always delighted for you and cheer on those in a position to give. I hope i can one day too. Hi Debbie. I have found that with the witch hazel essential oil spray that I don't have to reapply as often as I do the cutter brand. Even a couple of hours after applying I can still smell the scents on my skin and don't find that I am bothered by the mosquitos. Additionally, the cutter brand tends to leave me feeling sticky and like I need to take a shower after applying. But I do know that everyone's body is unique and reacts differently to essential oils. 😊💛

Would love to copy your recipe but a little confused,,, Did you mean black seed oil or black spruce? And real black pepper?
    Looks AMAZING!

Hi Teri! Black spruce oil and black peppercorn oil too. If you cannot locate black spruce oil, at least try to find the black pepper oil as this is a key ingredient. 😊💛

Hi Thomas! Yes, I have heard that Orkin and other services like that work well. I don't think there is anything like that available out here. Maybe Dork can add it to his Wedding planning, VCR Repair and Food Delivery Service and call it Dork'in. 🤣

Hey I love your video mosquitoes oh my God I have stories I could tell you they love me if there's a mosquito within 500 miles they always find me. Now the other big thing is CO2 if your body puts out a lot of CO2 they will find you in a second I think my body does do that. When I was in Northern British Columbia I got a little device to wear and it puts out the sound of a female mosquito especially the male mosquitoes stay away from you and it worked pretty good I didn't get bit too bad. I tell everybody the most important tool you can have around mosquitoes black flies or any insects that bite 90% or better rubbing alcohol and what you do you put that on the bike multiple times the pure alcohol gets into the bite and dries the bite out. After that I put a little triple antibiotic on the bites and that helps from getting infected. And let me tell you I had a mosquito or mosquitoes bite me on the leg in Southeastern Alaska about 15 years ago within 3 days I had cellulitis in my leg oh my God. Had to go to the hospital had to get transfused with some special junk had to take really hard and got it for the stupid thing hated it. But my worst experience was coming off the ferry at Prince Rupert and driving to Hazleton British Columbia. I've never seen the mosquitoes so bad they were relentless just wouldn't stop couldn't wrote a window down in your truck if you went to sleep in the back of my truck got in there they were biting through my clothes they were so hungry. I still have scars on my elbows but the rubbing alcohol 90% are better is the big trick put that on your bites and you'll thank me in the morning bye-bye San Pedro California🦟
