ill be getting a capo, and my reason is that I want to learn songs as theyre originally written, but when I sing along, I need to adjust the key for my own voice. sometimes all the time. I think its a pretty good reason, personally.
Capos are a very useful tool, especially for slide playing. For example, if your guitar is tuned to open G and you want to play in open A, slap a capo on the second fret.
I play my guitar (electric and acoustic) with a capo. Personally, I hate barre chords. I know they but I’ve had several hand injuries over the years that make them harder for me to play. So play on my friends!
Beginners starting to learn where each note is on the fretboard MASSIVELY benefit from a capo. Slap it on, learn the notes to a song... Muscle memory kicks in, take Capo off and (theoretically) your brain should be tuned into what frets to use even on open strings. Edit: OBVIOUSLY learn to play the instrument but a capo can be used as a learning tool as well as what you mention.
Awesome video. I came here because my Telecaster was going sharp when I used a capo and I have the exact black you advised against. 😅 Thank you so much!
I only use it to fit the singer's vocal range. Tune your guitar to D standard, use a capo, and you can adjust to any singer. I've never personally used those highest notes on the fretboard, so having lower notes is more useful.
I actually don't like when people refer to the chords by their open name because it confuses me. I play ukulele and guitar anyway, when I play guitar I know what a D is, when I play ukulele I know it's a G because it's a fourth higher, same as if I have a capo on the 5th fret, or if I make a barre chord using that shape. If I am on 2nd fret it's a whole step up, 5th fret it's a 4th, 7th it's a 5th. Some voicings are just really difficult to get with barre chords, requiring partial barres, etc especially if you are embellishing it and all your fingers are tied up, you should really know what chord you are playing rather than just it's shape. To go even further being able to construct chords in alternate tunings by knowing the intervals between strings is handy, I can pick up a mandolin and still figure out how to get the chord I am looking for but if someone writes the chord down by shape, I need to keep that in mind and remember to transpose it in my head if I am using a different instrument.
Yeah, pulling sharp is definitely moreso of an issue when using a capo where you can't control the pressure being applied. Another thing I should have mentioned in the video is making sure your nut height is set properly. A nut that's too high will contribute negativity to a Capo's functionality as well. Thanks for taking the time to comment!
I have been using a G7th capo for a long time. So far it is the best I’ve found for electric. Pricey though so I take extra care not to lose it. It works using a ratchet system and a lever for quick release. I use a capo a lot on electric. I got over the judgement of the naysayers.
The trouble is that on stage the capo will put the guitar out of tune, even if you know what you're doing (and you're right about pressure and position here). So you always have to check and retune most of the strings and that's not good before the audience. Some people talk to the audience when they tune but that's very difficult...
Interesting. I would suggest that if using a capo is pulling your guitar out of tune, you probably have a setup problem. Either your nut is too high (if you capo the first five frets or so) or some other string height issue exists, or if after taking the capo off things are out of tune your strings are getting hung up in the nut grooves. The former problem can be solved (or severely lessened) with a proper setup while the latter can be remedied with nut slot adjustment or by using a lubricant. Hopefully this helps anyone having a similar issue!
Can I bend and have decent vibrato with capos? I play some melodic and raw old school death metal, and some guys like James Murphy, Brandon Ellis are know by vibratos and stuff and I "kinda" play like that also, I never used a capo and I don't want a need to have 2 or 3 guitars, so, can I have some decent bend feel with capos? Thanks.
Unfortunately bending strings with a capo is just asking for trouble. A little vibrato might be fine, but anything more and I'd fear pulling the string out of tune :(

So can u play individual solos the same as you would if you didn't have a capo but you start with the capo as the nut but play it from there?and what about reading sheet music but then you have to change the key? 👍
What if I like... just want to use one to change the tuning? Like I have my guitar a full step down for like 2 Nirvana songs, but if I want to quickly switch to standard tuning, I could slap a capo on right? Is that just too stupid? I was considering getting a second guitar, one for standard and one for an alternate tuning, but... maybe a capo would get me by until then? (It does feel wrong to me, but I'm not really too worried about appearances lol. Just hoping it doesn't make me forget how to play when I go back to a capo-less guitar in standard tuning. Like, I hope my fingers remember where to go, since I know nothing about music and just learn by remembering where to put my fingers on the board.)
Well yes and no. A capo can help make barre chords easier but A) you should work on getting barre chords to the point where you are really comfortable with them and B) while you can place a capo on the first fret and make the F and Fm barre chords easier; you can’t access a proper Am Em or any open chord as easily anymore. They definitely have a positive side and I would say they are a crucial part of a guitarists toolkit as they can make some songs a lot easier to play. (take on me comes to mind) but you shouldn’t overuse them.
Dunlop Triggers FTW!!!! I never liked Kaisers, they hurt my palm. Dunlop Triggers work just as well, are more comfortable, and don't look goofy sitting on the headstock. Seriously though, I use capos all the time. Mostly to allow me to use certain chord shapes in whatever key the song is, so it really serves two purposes.
Even though yutube compression I could hear the sparkle left the open strings when the rubber clamp was put on. Don't let those millenials cheapen out our worship music. Seriously, a bunch of people who (won't learn modes, intervals, voice leading...) simple barre chords, notes on the neck, and want to call a chord "A" when it follows the open position 'A' chord shape in the CAGED method regardless of where it is on the neck. Why would we work with sound, and all its properties knowing that people have a synthesis of pitch. The ability to hear different notes as 'hot', or 'cool', go a head and put a capo on the second fret, create a 'B' chord, and call it "A"? They literally train people to hear pitch using the difference of 'C' and 'Bb'. If I play 'B', and call it 'A' on my little chart (devoid of time, tempo or not durration) with my crapo on the second fret, and I ascend above open position shapes bc I want to play in another position how do I then adjust to play in key? I have to transcribe up a whole step in my brain just to eek out a few notes in the second octave. 1. Capo ruins the shine of open strings (they're no longer open, they are now fretted). 2. Causes confusion on chord charts. Handing someone a chart that says 'G' but sounds Bb. 3. Obviscates soloing or any kind of melodic work above the first fret open position. 4. Causes a need for multiple charts in different key centers for instruments like piano and bass who aren't going to put a rubber clamp on their instrument. A caop by design causes a person to now juggle two key centers at the same time. Not a problem for a seasoned musician. Huge mega problem for sweet volunteer performers trying to give of their time and stand unfront of an audience where the primary goal is not to distract the audience in attendance for the purpose of focusing on not the music'
