Man, you really don't see places like Rogueport in many Mario games. People really make a big deal about a noose and gallows being front-and-center in the town's main square, but so many other, as Goombella and certain residents put it, "sketchy" stuff is here too, including a Toad-shaped chalk outline in a random Bandit's house, which was removed in international versions of this game. The more overt dark theming is one of the many reasons of why I love this game so much.
There’s also something to be said about the contrast between West Rogueport and the rest. That makes the sketchy part of Rogueport stand out all the more and implies some real class-based history. Really the game as a whole just does an excellent job worldbuilding.
I think that the reason this dark tonality is important is because it creates a stark contrast with the heroic and helpful nature of the main cast, helping it stand out in the process. it also makes it feel like despite its flaws and weird creepyness, Rogueport is still worth saving in the end. It’s simple, but it’s very narratively significant-it’s the same reason that Kirby’s whole pink puffball vs. eldritch cosmic horror thing works so well.
The middle of the song really does kind of display the mischievous and mysterious natures of rogueport and the start and ends more or so display the senses of adventure in finding a new place outside of the mushroom kingdom.
one of my favourite hub areas the music, the themeing, the crime scene in that bandit house in teh japense version and the noose which i didnt expect to be in the remake oh yeah and gambling🤑
Looking at this song on purpose, I see the interesting stuff they did with it. Some parts, it sounds happy and others, it sounds very mischevious. The mischevious moments really do represent the place while the happy ones(especially the beginning of the song) don't really represent it that well. Compared to other main Paper Mario RPG towns, Rogueport is a mess. It's all poorly painted, with mischevious Bandits ready to steal your coins at any given time. The only reasons you go back to it is the lack of any true harm, the shops, the Inns and the need to go to different areas. It almost sounds like they made 2 different songs into one. While we see that this song is very clearly not perfect, it's hard to think of ways to change it to make it sound both better and more representative of Rogueport. I haven't heard the remake yet, which I'm about to do and I'll see how the changes made will affect my opinion.
Definitely! Will have to use the original soundtrack badge. They really ruined the soundtrack. They need to just always have the original soundtrack as an option in settings.
Been playing the remake for 2 days now and although this version is my favorite the new one is kinda growing on me I never finished the original cuz I was stuck and rented it in blockbuster but am liking the remake soundtrack especially the underground theme.
@@Lord_Elronyeah I agree. Usually I’m a stickler for the “old” version of music. I hate basically all of the remade soundtracks in the Pokémon remakes for example, but even I think that this game’s remake did an awesome job. I didn’t really grow up with this game tho, so maybe there’s that.

They're removing a lot of the confronting or dark themes and sexual innuendo in the remake for the Switch unfortunately.
Good thing I kept the OG.
@@botterminator they are no, the game stays intact even the noose is in the game

A better representation of Rogueport's dirty, pirate-y atmosphere than the remake
Welcome to the hood.
Oh, I forgot how rogueport turns out when you do tons of exploration when you’re going for all chapters and post game stuff. This one slaps!
great first song to hear after buying the nostalgic tunes badge
Nintendo has made one of the best songs in the universe.
Me when visiting Detroit:
This song is awesome... until you spend hours listening to it through your playthrough. Its kinda like ptsd at this point.
luckily the remake gave 2 flavors when you got tired of one but it was still torture by the end

The anthem of Philadelphia
Better than remix version 😅

@@princessmagicalIndeed, I am so happy to see that badge, decide to use it in whole game.

Definitely. The whole game felt off until i found this badge.
