Yep I'm thinking one more accident and spectators wont be allowed down the track. I'm guilty of standing a bit close but it was on a straight section not on the outside of a corner.
20 years ago I sat on top of my 4WD about 5m off the track when the police car entry came into sight (Police lights and sirens blarning too). It suffered a radiator malfuntion and we tried to help them fix it but it proved no use. We offered them a beer as they were out of the race. They took it. 30 min later (and another beer later) we got the radiator leak fixed and they went on with the race. I bet that was totally illegal. BTW they broke down 20km later and finished their race. But it shows the level of cotton wool thats around events these days.
Personally I think they should take the gps out of the cars and run like the old days. Driver skill on what he remembers or sees not what the co driver is telling him every turn or big bump.
