It’s not *quite* like this story but this couple does remind me a little of my grandparents.
She wasn’t what I’d call nerdy but my grandmother did well in school academics, played hockey, loved reading and was painfully shy and had bad anxiety and self esteem issues (the last two lasted her whole life). She was born and brought up in a small village, went to school there, everyone knew everyone and their business.
My grandfather, he was what you’d call a lone wolf. He didn’t talk a lot, was in trouble and had detention quite often. Teachers didn’t like him much. He, his brother and their parents moved to the village when he was in his mid teens and the teenage girls soon had big crushes on him (including one of my grandmother’s sisters) but he wasn’t interested. He had black hair, olive skin, was deemed very good looking, he looked very different to most people around (even though this all happened in Wales and he’s half welsh).
My grandmother had a crush on him but didn’t think he’d ever look at her because she didn’t think much of herself and he was so good looking. However, one day, it was tipping it down with rain and separately, they were both out in it for different reasons but my grandmother had an umbrella but my grandfather did not. Anyway, they both had to cross this particular road which had a middle island between the lanes, one was crossing one way and the other was crossing the other way and they bumped into each other whilst on that island. My grandmother offered to share her umbrella with him and that was that.
There’s more to their relationships and then marriage later on but for now, three children later and they were happily married for 41 years until my grandmother died at the age of 62.

There was “Beauty and the Geek,” there are countless movies and books and tv shows featuring this trope. @@SemekiIzuio that’s two examples. One Taylor Swift song and a TV show. There is FAR more media featuring geeky men with pretty girls if for no other reason than the fact that men used to be more of the target audience. Women have traditionally (and still are) more valued for their looks, men think their value lies in other things. Look at cartoons-Fred and Wilma from the Flintstones, Jessica and Roger Rabbit, nearly any early sitcom wife and husband pairing. The men are the default, the “protagonist” and they “earn” the pretty girl as a prize.

My parents are what you would consider "cool" I guess. My dad worked at a canteen near my mom's university. He was the hardworking, stern, handsome guy that girls fawn over. (according to him) And my mom was the beautiful, tall, varsity player that guys admired (still according to him) He apparently fell in love at first sight and courted her for a whole semester. She refused because apparently she was moving to a different university the next semester. My dad didn't want to give up, but had to. Next semester came and boom, my mom was still there. He didn't want her to escape and the rest was history.
According to my mom, she didn't want to date him because she imagined that if they get married, she would have to take his surname. She liked her surname and didn't like his because her surname "sounded pretty". Apparently, the only reason she said yes was because he was handsome. 😂
This was the story they always told us growing up. Which, funnily enough, in my country you could 100% use the wife's surname for your family or even both of your surnames combined. (Yes, we are using my dad's surname) 😂

My dad on the other hand was not popular like my mom and very shy. But, my mom said a lot of girls had crushes on him and my dad wasn’t aware of.
My grandparents (mom’s side) didn’t like my dad. Thought he would be a bad influence to my mom. My mom continued being with him and still are.
However, things are different now. My parents have been fighting (silent fighting as they don’t yell but they don’t sleep together anymore and only talk when they need something). My mom unfortunately had 2 cancers (breast and stomach) and has to do another biopsy as her doctors believe she has another one now in her lungs. and we were really great friends with the dance team since we often exchange members in cases of emergency (injuries, failing grade, lack of member). we shared some coaches (gymnastics and contemporary). we were close with the school paper as well since they're often at our events.
when i entered university, i passed the try-outs for our cheer team but i didn't continue it. i saw the stereotypes. the girls had the queen bee persona, while the boys had the fuck boy status. slacked off in classes as well. i was so so so surprised and disappointed.

This is honestly one of the sweetest love stories ive ever heard.
    First of all, its real.
Second, its turns things around. Not only is it the cool and popular guy going out with the nerdy awkward girl instead of the reverse; but rather than be Disney channel about it and make it about popularity, everyone was giving the cool guy a hard time because they thought he would weigh her down; and he worked whole heartedly to prove to everyone that he was worthy of the akward girl

I was the nerdy, socially inept, straight A girl who married the popular boy… also had our first son at 20.. also happily married and in love 23 years later. I think it says something about the type of popular kid who goes for someone they love, not someone to impress others.

They met swing dancing in college and have had a great relationship since ❤I’m lokey obsessed with them cuz they are super cute and a great role model for me

I know he was so popular because all through the past three and a half decades, people still come up to us in stores or restaurants or post on social media about how he was back then. 😁 Even people several years ahead or behind knew him.

People are usually more multi dimensional than these high school labels suggest. On the surface, my own parents’ story could fit these stereotypes, but not really. Let me explain… keep in mind this was before I was born and I only know what my Mom told me.
My Dad played football but was not exactly the popular kid. He wasn’t a nerd. Based on the Dad I know, my guess is the popular kids respected him but he didn’t hang out with them outside of school. I suspect he *could* have been popular but secretly didn’t really like the popular kids; he just liked playing football. I could be wrong.
He had 2 best friends and they all played football. That’s the only thing they had in common. One friend was cerebral and a top student, the one who corrected the teacher, and ended up going to an Ivy League college. The other was rough around the edges rode motorcycles and barely stayed out of trouble.
My Mom was quiet and a good student. She loves to read and also liked math and like academics due to a love for learning. Her best friend in elementary school did “drop her like a hot potato” in middle school and started sitting at “the popular table” in the cafeteria. But she wasn’t a target of bullying and was part of a 4 girl friend group. There was her and her best friend and 2 other girls who were best friends.
Apparently my Mom had a crush on my Dad for a while, I don’t know how long. She used a fake name when talking about him with her friends. Meanwhile, my Dad also had a crush on my Mom but didn’t ask her out sooner because he actually heard her talking about this guy with the fake name who was actually him and my Dad assumed my Mom had a boyfriend at some other school. I’m not sure if they began dating right before or right after graduation.
Anyway, so many questions, that I keep forgetting to ask and I didn’t know how to formulate when my Mom shared their story with my when I was a kid. Like, how much and how loudly was my Mom talking about my Dad using the fake name? What caused Dad to realize my Mom didn’t actually have a boyfriend at another school? Part of me thinks the story is cute and another part of me struggles to picture my Mom being so immature but she was in high school. I find myself actually frustrated that she couldn’t simply avoid talking about him at school and only talk about him outside of school. Maybe she had limited access to the phone. This was over 50 years ago. When I liked a guy in high school I tried to play it cool and was reluctant to even tell anyone. Her high school self is simply not someone I know.

We all end up the same. Just people tryna pay bills. It's not that big of a mystery. I knew Miley Cyrus briefly when we were young. Her name was Destiny then. So, unless they happen to grow up and become famous, they're probably in credit card debt, working overtime, baby on the way, etc. I was popular in highschool but it's only because I'm attractive and developed early. I noticed this was a common theme with my male and female peers. All the hot people usually just hangout together and do drugs or experiment with sex in a variety of ways. I don't advise it.
