They actually want them to provide levity; unfortunately it's been bred into our culture that you must be high or spaced to be the least bit entertaining. I once heard someone say that Chevy Chase wasn't funny anymore since he quit drinking. Looking back and being honest he wasn't really funny but silly and the drinking just would make the antics easier. I feel he's much funnier now that he realizes he has talent and doesn't rely on being drunk or high.
