I think the parents were not doing their job of supervising their kids in most of these situations. The adults who murdered their children are another story. Parents should be putting limits on the time kids spend on line period. Much less time limits on these violent games.

There is also the fact that some criminals, their families, or their lawyers will sometimes blame games in an effort to shift blame or make a quick buck via lawsuit. I used to be really addicted to the internet and MMOs. After I found out about getting blood clots from sitting too long, I started doing other things. I recall a few games would tell me I had been playing for an hour, and to take a break. I think that's pretty neat.

I is easy to get caught up in the thrill of winning the fight and "saving the day"; especially when your real life seems to be rather unremarkable. It is easy to understand how many people could find the fantasy life more preferable to their real life. But that does not justify, or excuse their actions. Many people blame role playing and video games; which do contribute to the problem. But I feel that the biggest contributing factor is the lack of parental supervision. That occasional, gentle reminder that "it is only a game", which teaches children where the boundary between reality and fantasy lies. This is something that parents (and friends) can easily teach to anyone; unless they, themselves, don't know where that boundary lies. 😉
