I have always been a Pentangle fan and Willy of Winsbury was one of my favorite songs ... I love the story. I've listened to it a thousand times. On a trip to California, I accidentally happened upon John Renbourn and Jacqui McShee giving a performance at a small former movie theater, maybe 15 years ago. It was well-attended and delightful ... I never thought I'd have the opportunity to see them ... I think Renbourn died a couple of years later. I still have the ticket. Your rendition is quite wonderful, I have listened to it several times in a row already today! Thank you for your art!
I love how adaptable traditional songs are, which is why they are timeless! Long time Pentangle fan here, now also a Christie Reeves fan! Well done!! Got to go look up more of your work. Thank You!!
Beautiful rendition! Fairport Convention used the same tune for their song 'Farewell, Farewell' on the album Liege & Lief (1969), sung by Sandy Denny, lyrics by Richard Thompson.
I love the transition you made at the beginning with your voice and style. When you went from strumming to picking, the vibrato in your voice, made me think of water flowing over rocks in a creek. Absolutely beautiful. Thank you for your music. By the way, your range is impressive! Rich bass notes and smooth, soothing high octave. I really feel like I'm sitting by a stream, a very peaceful place. ❤
Woah - ultimate compliments! I'm honoured - such a lovely write up on my voice and I'm glad that it can bring a sense of peace to your day - thank you!
@@CanIEditMyUserName I always liked 'Janet', no it doesn't rhyme quite as well as 'Jane', but there's a strange authenticity to it. I imagine the bard had a visage for the name, but who knows what was in his mind. For me the Pentangle version is just as lovely.
I can understand why you think it sounds a bit off but like cursoryglance1558 I really like it. Noticed it but never slightly disliked it. The sharp "T" in Janet has a sort of alliterative rhyme with the T in "daughter" as well.
One of the best I've ever heard. Love the light strum transitioning to picking and back again arrangement. So many fingerstylists jump right into the picking... and the pace.... vocal delivery....even facial expressions.... all absolutely perfect brit-folk. Congratulations...it is wonderful!!
Wow such a wonderful comment! That makes me feel my hard work paid off 😄 I love this song so much & so gave every detail much thought, very glad that you appreciate my work. Thank you 🙏 💛
@@ChristieReeves I first learned it from the Richard Thompson version, but am also quite familiar with the Pentangle version of course. But after several listens, yours is my favorite. Your appropriately reserved presentation makes Jacqui McShee's look too overly animated 🙃🙃🙃🙃
Stumbled on this watching some old Pentangle videos and really glad I did. This is right up there with the versions by Jacqui McShee / Pentangle and Anais Mitchell & Jefferson Hamer. You've adapted it perfectly for your voice. Wonderful!
I was listening to Lady Moon's album again yesterday, and her version of this song really got in my head this time, so I looked on RUclips for other performers' versions and was glad to find this splendid one of yours. I too thought the use of the name Janet in Pentangle's version was awkward, so I'm glad you made the same change Eva did.
Excellent performance of this incredible timeless classic! The gothic cathedral is the perfect setting both visually, spiritually and as well as acoustically.
Superb. Best version I can find. The guitar tuned down is genius and suits your lovely voice and reflects the dark tones of this story. Thanks you for sharing!
Breathtaking version. A favourite artist of mine, Olivia Chaney, together with The Decemberists recorded it a few years ago as Offa Rex, which was the first time I'd heard it since childhood (Pentangle's recording). I believe Olivia and Lady Moon have been in contact regarding drones, amongst other things. I'm very happy to have stumbled upon your lovely video, and look forward to discovering more of your music.
Wasn't sure about the slow tempo in the intro but once the guitar kicked in just wow!!!! As has already been mentioned, its ALWAYS best to sing in a comfortable key as your voice will thank you for it later in life! A fantastic rendition!!! Truly! Also nice that your voice isnt too processed so it captures YOU and makes YOU sound unique instead of ummmm.....well.... I don't wanna insult anyone so I'll let you figure out what I mean ;-)
wow, WOW. absolutely beautiful rendition thankyou for this! side note, the lyrics to this song always crack me up a little bit as it's so austere and folky but the dramatic turnaround is the king saying 'hot damn, this guy? would bang, call off the hanging make him a lord'
Thank you for the lovely comment! So glad you’re enjoying it. And I completely agree 😂 those who listen to the end are certainly rewarded with a giggle from that cheeky line!
@@ChristieReeves I love how this very haunting melody has lyrics that are somewhat comical, rather bawdy.
