These early Christian monks brought wth them their Gaelic tounge, and they were the only ones who could write, - So naturally they imposed Gaelic place names everywhere. IMO the locals did not speak Gaelic. Gaelic was an imported thing from the West. I often wonder what the locals used to think, or say about those well off Christian monks within the walls of Deer Abbey with their strange Gaelic language. I wonder what the locals sounded like when they spoke Buchan?
