Love this lineup, they made such an impression on me. Saw them Summer of '86 on Boston Common, opening up for the "new formed" Chick Corea Electrik Band.
I have heard many performances by Wayne Shorter, but this is really the best one, in my opinion. The climax and the rhythm, and the endless solo are great. And the long bass lines!!!
I remember this from Pori Jazz, the same year. The drumming at the beginning indicated that there's something immemorable to come. One of the greatest, eye opening gigs in my life
At 6:36 Willis' bass cuts out for some reason. A technical hiccup probably, but wow...! It's like the heavens opening up for a moment. And then he cuts in again and it hits you right in the feels. A truly happy accident, that.
I still live in the Hague, and every time I'm on my bicycle and pass the Congresgebouw venue, this pops into my head. One of many highlights of the festival.
Ja, ik heb er ook de allerbeste herinneringen aan. Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, Pat Metheny, Miles Davis, Yellowjackets, Parallell Realities, John McLaughlin - ze waren allemaal daar!
@@marcelbas Pfff… The list goes on. Steps Ahead, Brecker brothers, Chick Corea, Spyro, ik ging vanaf 1992 standaard ieder jaar drie dagen. Heerlijke tijd!
Thanks... Back then we still had some good music broadcasted... Steps Ahead, Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, ... I think it was AVRO (???) with Paul van Schaik (???)... Me and my friends used to watch this video every day, after playing some vinyl records of Zappa, Magma, Mahavishnu, Hammer, RTF, Zappa, also Metheny, Narada and Steely Dan... of course, "eating sandwiches" (like they say in How I met your Mother)... and each time we got totally high and inspired on this NSJ performance... the harmonies, the dynamics, the virtuose drumming, the building up... Mitchel getting into action all the way... Gary loosing his sound at 6:40... The hilarious sax burp of Wayne at 7:25... At the end we turned to the beginning again... again and again... This was a true revelation... Thank you Wayne...Thank you Avro... thank you NSJ, thank you Paul,,, thank you music loving gods...
Fantastic performance! Must be from July 13 in 1986. I have a tape from a gig they played at the Montreux Jazz Festival the night after. Been listening to this over and over. Really great stuff
I remember this from the same year, at Pori jazz Finland. One of the most memorable gigs through the years. Tom Brechtlein made this beautiful opening there, too. And now, Wayne Shorter is coming to Pori with Brian Blade. I'll be there, definitely
missed this one,for me a killer track slammin groove and tremendous build up, wayne shorter is all class blowing up a storm and the band just magic...love it
Man, this takes me way back. I remember watching this concert on PBS back in the late 80s. I was in High School. What a great band! Thanks for posting!
このバンドを観て37年が経ちました。 日本公演でのキーボードはミッチェルフォアマンではなかったと思います。 素敵な思い出でした。 37years ago I watch Wayne Shorer group at osaka in japan Mitchel foreman parhaps not attended Gary Willis playng bass is great‼︎ more amazing‼︎ I thought jaco pastorious second coming playng ‼︎
I saw this band, probably in '85, in a small Hollywood venue called "The Palace Court." I remember I shared a few words with Gary Willis, and the performance of this tune was utterly transporting/cosmic/revelational/transcendental and ETC.!!!!
Man, I couldnt even see that is was Gary. Found this clip after searching for Wayne Shorter, and I didnt even look who was on it, closed the window and started writing on my paper. I heard it was Gary from the first note, he is so recognizable even with different equipment and even if its recoreded like 22 years ago :) Man, Gary really kick it, love his playing...Thanks for posting! Sandemose
Amazing. en now in dutch. Ik wist helemaal niet dat deze NSJ opname er was. Toen ik de opname bekeek, in eerste instantie vanwege Mitchel Forman, hoorde ik Wayne beginnen. Ben er helemaal stil van. Dit geeft licht ! Thanx.
My fault, you're right, even if this version is very, very far from the original; its only a small subpart in the middle, I've never made the link. And i've listened to it twice before writing here to verify, but, I've missed it. I have an other version of this piece, with the full concert in La Vilette in Paris : a very very rare unknown version... Thank you for solving the mystery !!!
Yeahhh Plaza Real from the Procession album first one with;Victor Bailey,Omar,Hakim,&Jose Rossi,,,,Molasses Run is one that album as well.Omar I s playing that one somewhere here on RUclips.
North Sea Jazz '86 not '85 EuroChannel recorded it but didnt air it.I was there Scofield band with ricky Sebastian,Jim Beard and the bassplayer from the Pick hits cd,Also Spyro Gyra with Richie M,Julio F,Manolo Badrena with the bettyBoob shirt on,Kim S and the 2 founders of the Band.
@turok0404 Yep, very good and tastefull, just as the whole feel and sounding of this gem from older styled and past days of jazz-rock music. Happy although to see the rating in amount and appreciation being raising as this deserves! ;-)
German tv also recorded it and broadcast it on German tv,,,only with Tom Canning on keyboards. I'll try to find the entire N.S.Jazz recordings,,it's rough thou,(no sound edit)
To my defense, if one get "Procession" to get this track will be disappointed ! It's like they named "The well" track in "Procession" as "Orphan" (in the 8:30 album) because they played a small extract of the second near the end... J.
Can't get tired of this one. The build up, the fever. I wonder why Tom Brechtlein never played with Tribal Tech, that could have produced some gems. Stupid anecdote, anybody noticed the black square ? look at 0:02 or 2:22
It's this very formation, with exactly the same repertoire, for example the plaza real-footprints song. It was taken live in the 80's during the Shorter tour. I have several other version of plaza real but they are more or less like the procession version. All other tacks of the concert are the ones we can expect, except this one which is very different from the original (this is why I've searched so long to find what it is). I've never found this version on a "official" recording, do you ?
Sorry, but this is not Plaza Real. Listen to it, you will hear that it's absolutly something different. I've been seraching for a long time about the actual name of this song, but I have not found it yet.
First time I've ever seen Gary Willis without his ever-present ball cap on--it's a revelation! :-)
Yes you are right 😁
Love this lineup, they made such an impression on me. Saw them Summer of '86 on Boston Common, opening up for the "new formed" Chick Corea Electrik Band.
Yup - me too, outside of Chicago. It was Chick, Wayne and Al.
Rip wayne my hero.😢

Ahhhhh !!! Times pass and this version with this amazing musicians become more incredible !!!! Bretchlein aaaaahggggg GENIUSSS
The great Gary Willis on bass!!!
I wonder if Willis still has that Tobias?
Great band and a misunderstood and misrepresented era of Jazz history. Thanks for posting. :-)

A powerful performance that builds in intensity.

Brechtlein is the king here!
He's been the king since high school .

Jag var där också, 1986. Tog båten över med en kompis.
Fun times at Pori Jazz 1999

Wayne definitely was trying to recreate some Weather Report magic. He certainly chose the right players.
Unbelievable performance. :-)
Points to Wayne Shorter for his choice of talented musicians!!!

l'intro ça marche pas je pense attaqué sur plaza real c'est pour le moins curieux je pense en début de concert
@ 7:20... the tea is boiling
Willis losing his signal almost sounds like it was meant to be.
Gary willis without hat and having hair!!!
Gary the only...sounds like almost as Jaco.
Sorry but I cannot tell you that. We'll have to wait till someone specialized in this music, that time will come up with it, grtz, Aart.

I'm using this intro for my next gig. It demand you to shut up and listen.
Nefertiti じゃないの?
The "real" North Sea Jazz. Not thecrap they're trying to pull off in Rotterdam.
Just to get this straight, Weckl's the drummer; Mitch Forman's on keys.
Nope. It's Brechtlein.
Tom Bretchlein on drums
Amazing talent, particularly Brechtlein and Willis, but the horrible 80s keyboard sounds make it nearly unlistenable.
This is not jazz and has no artistic value.
This is not a serious comment and has no artistic value.
This is Jazz Fusion and it is born of the highest artistic level of creativity! Your statement is so sad. I feel for you....
This is bait and has no intellectual value
Whaahahahaha you born under a rock?!?...
Ricardo da Mata Wayne Shorter says jazz doesn't have to be swinging drums, walking bass etc all the 🕙 time
