DUNE: A Brief History of The Butlerian Jihad (Encyclopedia)

The uprising against thinking machines, according to the Dune encyclopedia, came out of a rebellion against the planet Richese led by Jehanne Butler. They eventually discovered that the population of the Planet Komos had been altered by the thinking machines with the help of chef programmers. The citizens of the world had been changed emotionally and intellectually. The revolt began with an alteration in the rebel ranks. The goal of the Jihad was to destroy any mechanical technology which operated at the expense of human values.
The Butlerian Jihad had begun. In 199 BG the Jihad attacked the planet Illerda. Through clever military tactics the Jihad was able to force the Illerdans to abandoned their moon and eventually surrender their entire world. There were very few casualties during the effort. The encyclopedia notes that this operation remains an excellent example of the distinction between the use of power and the use of force. The deaths during the operation were confined to the crews of two vessels that tried to run the planetary blockade just before the surrender occurred.
