    A brainblast I recently had was, “There’s a special kind of evil that can go into a place where children are full of joy and want to cause them harm.” That kind of evil has a lasting impact, and more than anything that is what FNAF’s story is about.
    It’s why I get frustrated with people saying they’re tired of hearing about “kids that died 30 years ago” and want to move on from Afton as the villain. It’s not just grief. It’s the hurt that is bleeding out and causing all of this.

    "I am agony."
    Localized agony is often felt like a legend, and legends always come back. Afton, the embodiment of agony in every way imaginable, despite all the horrific things he's done in his life and despite everything he's done to the lives of other people, is truly the embodiment of legend. His agony, the power he held in blood stained iron for countless unspoken years despite it fizzling out pathetically at the bottom of a lake, is felt in every facet of life because of the horrific desperation and continual spread of the infectious wonder he created. Fazbear Entertainment, where fantasy and fun truly do come to life.
    Truly a realized antagonist when given a presentation such as this. Great job Ozone.

    • @OzoneYT
      @OzoneYT  8 месяцев назад +17

      Wow, what a great way to put it! I really loved the addition of agony as a scientific term to the series because it gives reason and narrative behind haunted things. When Afton says he is the very concept of Agony, he is the past trauma he has inflicted, he is all of his pain of the present and he is the reason many will be infected in the future. That was such an overlooked scene that really delves deep into the core themes of the franchise, I'm glad I was able to present it!

  • @Fragmentsinfractals488

    Here's the Thing. William Afton really isn't a "human" anymore. He is a Metaphysical Concept, the kind that Exist the way Demons or Angels are thought to. The backbone that Haunts Freddy, whether Literally or Metaphysically. And that is, perhaps, Why The Mimic would try to copy him, if that is what they are doing.

  • @galaxycamerata
    @galaxycamerata 8 месяцев назад +96

    I love Silver Eyes William and Twisted Ones Springtrap because it highlights William's recurring drive throughout everything he appears in. His primary motivations seem to be cowardice... and jealousy. He targets children simply because they can't fight back. When he's forced to confront the world as his truest self laid bare, he has a mental shutdown and just refuses to speak, and barely even moves until he's given a new mask to hide behind. But when he wears those masks, being the literal Spring Bonnie or the metaphorical David Miller, it gives him the confidence to confront things. At the core of it, it seems his greatest dilemma is that William Afton desperately _does not want to be William Afton_ . Because he's afraid of the consequences. Afraid of the horrors hes created and what they'll do to him. Of death. However, after Charlie unhooks his springlocks... He _adores_ it. The agony of existing like that is nothing to him, because he is still there.
    And thats where the jealousy comes in. Seeing those he killed being given new life, life he felt he deserved, probably broke him in some way when he put the pieces together. He saw a way to be immortal... But the only way to achieve it was to put himself through pure suffering. And while he will accept any price for immortality, he ironically can't stomach the simplest solution he has the most control over after his first time surviving the springlock failure and likely being traumatized by it.
    So when he has the choice made FOR him, he becomes so much more himself. He's literally rotting away and yet he has never felt so alive. He has a face that can't be removed. He has a body that will never die. He has everything he wants to continue his life unabated.
    That seems to come into play the most in the finale to Fazbear Frights epilogues as well. William was a weak man. A coward who killed children to derive pleasure and power. Who couldn't save his own family from falling apart even when he was trying to be a decent man, let alone when he was trying to seek power. One who had been laid low by the very children he killed after unwittingly making them more powerful than he ever imagined they could be. But now, he wasn't that anymore. He was a titan. A writhing monument to his own legacy of terror, pain, and conquest.
    It's little wonder "Afton" and "Agony" have the same number of letters to them.

  • @agonyremnanttrap6789

    Great video of analyzing William Afton. This is certainly why he's one of my favorite villains. A purple man finding his way to live through the afterlife and with his main goal having a family that obeys him and not to be confronted for any of his misdeeds on both life and death at all cost. Even if it means making his own family with animatronics and becoming one himself as well as suffering and loving forever. His portrayal in FNaF2, FNaF3, the Novels, Frights and movie are very enjoyable to me. The Man Behind The Slaughter who will achieve anything he wants, a man whose head is filled with illusions/delusions of what he dreamed of.
    It's evident that Afton is a horrible person as he deserves to be in own nightmare-hell and suffering he gotten. He's definitely a narcissistic coward who thinks he's better than everyone else.
    However, he's still a good villain and his motivations are understandable.
    He also has a good voice and good voice lines which I like are "It is not your flesh that sustains me. It is your fear", "Suffer now, like all who stood before me", "Let see how many times you can be pulled part. And put back together again", "Fascinating. What they have become", "You may not recognize me at first but I assure you, it's still me", and of course "I always come back".
    I believe that his portrayal in FFPS a was the only thing that I did not find very satisfying and enjoyable.
    His movie adaptation/version/counterpart is truly how I view him.
    Matthew did a good job becoming the best version of William. He acted so clam and intelligent to Mike but then at the end when he revealed his true colors/personality, he's a very cruel and murderous man. I actually like this portrayal of Afton a lot than the games.
    He appears clear and proper to me these days.

    @Ha_Sals-ha 8 месяцев назад +18

    You make a very vital point on what a legacy is in this context. If a legacy comes from a person or character, who and what they are gets interpreted a lot of ways. It's kinda like how legends and tales get various interpretations from different authors. Hearing you go over each medium clicked with me that they are all different tellings of the same story. But the alternate scenarios not only shows us what others [characters] might see in this 'story', they add something and show us a wider collective perspective.
    To compare, the games and the original three novels are deeply entrenched within the story of William. Both continuities have William's iron grip as he's always an active threat in some fashion. Where they differ is how the characters react with how William is presented by the story. The games show the rise and downfall of William; his claim of power (Fnaf1-SL), his entrapments and defeats (Fnaf3-PizzaSim-UCN), and the flandering and diluting of his legacy (HW-Ruin). The games show how a tragic story becomes butchered with the progress of time and skewed perspective of the public by Fazbear Entertainment.
    The original novels display the coping of loss and reopening of old wounds. The Silver Eyes starts as a recovery from this tragedy but everything following onwards to The Twisted Ones and The Fourth Closet display how tragedy and trauma is brought back in the worst case scenario by having William as a returning and active threat. And this is felt until the very end of the third book. The original novels are a case of failure to recover by having the very cause of it return and make everything worse in the end.
    On the other hand, both book anthologies lean towards the widespread aftershocks of William. They all lean towards the obscurity, the tall tales, the gossip and rumors of what he did. And sure, he does act as an active threat in sporadic cases, but it's only a piece of the larger puzzle. Fazbear Frights does a fantastic job showing this, having multiple stories show how buried the story became, only being vaguely heard of when one goes down the rabbithole. And I also love that we see a variety of characters that get affected by these aftershocks, whether they were linked to the Fazbear name or not, looking for answers or otherwise. But nearly all of the characters we see in those novella stories were innocent people, unrelated to what occurred back then. It's crazy to think that this man's actions were so catastrophic, they hurt unknowing people decades beyond that.
    Tales from The Pizzaplex goes more into the flanderization side of legacy. So much so, I don't think William's name is ever outright spoken [correct me if I'm wrong on this, I haven't read Dittophobia or the last Epilogue just yet]. There's still the burial of the story like in Frights, but here we get to see how corrupted it became once the Pizzaplexes took over. This lures even more unsuspecting people into the trap is is still the aftershocks of the original story. And it's fascinating and heartbreaking to see characters who are brand new to the Fazbear name get roped in and punished for getting too close to something they never knew existed. Both of these anthologies will always be based in my eyes, flaws aside.
    Finally, the film is a bit trickier to tell as it's currently ongoing, so some details aren't known yet. But it looks like it's going in a route similar to the original novels with reopening old wounds, but it differs with the direct victim, Mike, refusing anything in life that isn't closure to his pain. Kind of a vengeance story, I guess? This may be a hot take, but I think the film is more focusing on character study instead of arbitrary lore tie-ins, which is nice. Seeing the start of Mike and Vanessa's arcs in search of closure is a very cool opposite to the novels. The film, so far, shows how someone with direct ties to the story chooses to face it directly and won't feel at peace until there's solid closure. I have the least to say here because I'm still mulling over it in my head and it's an unfinished story right now, but I really like this direction they're potentially heading to. If anyone has there two cents on the film, I'd like to hear it out!
    Bottom line is that William Afton's legacy is felt everywhere in all continuities. The original story is taken in a multitude of ways based how story presentation and who's eyes we see them through. I personally don't think it matters if the other stories don't follow the original story to the letter. In my opinion, every official interpretation we've seen up until know shows us how the world within the Fnaf universe sees William Afton at large. Always being remembered means he always come back.
    Sorry for the long winded comment, I thought your analysis was fantastic here, Ozone!

    Dude!!! This is a really good video, I absolutely adore FNaF video essays!
    I always spend time watching videos like these while im working on my own FNaF related projects as it serves as inspiration, but also just as something nice to listen to in the background!
    For so long, I've known about the Miscreation or "The Agony" character in the books. I always joked around about him just appearing and then dying shortly after and being essentially a waste of a character in my eyes. But once you fully described the scene where Afton blows up in the Fazbear's storage place and infects things and eventually becomes the Agony I got new love for that version of Afton and really the end of his story.
    Weirdly enough aswell, I have talked to my friends about how even when Afton is gone- he still affects the story with his legacy, though I couldn't really put it into the right words on why that's the case- But I feel like you really described it well and pictured it in this video!

    Something I think would be cool for springtrap is what if he had mold and mushroom/fungus growing on his body where he’s damaged and has holes and missing parts and not only that but he could somewhat control them and even cause them to spread, the mushrooms could be bioluminescence glowing purple and whenever he uses his mold it can infect and corrupt a person both physically and mentally.

    I like how in the Fazbear Frights books, William takes too many forms.
    He is a fixed up spring Bonnie on the other side of a time-traveling ball pit. He’s a piece of VR code who makes a man pregnant. In the story right after that, he’s a crippled “corpse” who isn’t allowed to die. He’s a broken down spring Bonnie in the Fazbear’s Fright horror attraction who copies someone’s abusive stepfather and makes them die in an oven fire.
    He comes back, and he comes anew.

    I'm of the same opinion that Mimic took over Afton's personality. Therefore, he was still the main villain in Pizzaplex.
    Because if Mimic simply cosplayed Afton, then this ruins the image of Glitchtrap, as (in my opinion) the analogy with the Green Goblin due to the fact that it was just another masquerade of some no-name.

      @@dylanhudec979 I massively enjoyed this video and agreed with a whole lot of it, but I have to push back hard on the Mimic being testifying because it's a "forced of nature."
      No it's not. "The Purple Guy" was scary because he was a mystery, we didn't know anything about him, we were left with only some confirmations and the rest was our own imagination, like an urban legend. As Afton's novelty wore off, so did his terror, with Fnaf6 being sadly one of his weakest appearances (Pizza Sim is absolutely GOATED don't misunderstand me, Afton just isn't uniquely terrifying at that point.)
      Mimic AI ISNT scary because there isn't anything TO know about it. It mimics. That's... literally it. It has no motivation, no desire, no overarching goal. Sure it's unpredictable, but only in the way a thunderstorm is: Can it be terrifying? Absolutely. Is it going to haunt my nightmares, keep me awake at the memory of it, and try restlessly to grapple with the existence of evil in this world and its effects on us as human beings? Probably not.
      Tl;Dr, if everything is Mimic then Mimic ceases to be scary

    Things I think would be cool for William afton in a future game (though these are very unlikely to ever happen).
    1. A sequel of ultimate custom night that focuses more on psychological horror as we follow William afton trying to survive and escape his personal hell while avoiding golden Freddy and the mediocre melodies who Cassidy has turned into her avatars and in new forms, and the game could also have us Better learn about William and his dark past.
    2. A fnaf game that’s set in a newer version of the fazbear frights horror attraction called the ultra horrorplex (bigger, better and scarier than ever), and the main attraction is none other than William afton himself in a new trap form, but rather than being a threat (whether by choice or perhaps by memory loss) he no longer tries to kill people and instead focuses on trying to take done fazbear entertainment llc.

    I feel like the line “I always come” back holds a lot of meanings. When he first dies and comes back it’s to show how Afton refuses to let go. The souls of the children find peace and learn to let go of the past but Afton won’t. He refuses to which is why no matter what he’ll always be a killer. In fnaf 6 it’s to show how he’ll always come back to haunt Michael. When Michael was a teen William tortured him with fear gas to break his mind, he tries to kill Michael in fnaf 3, and now we see him once again unable to let go. In UCN Cassidy uses Aftons quote against him. Since he confidently says that he always comes back Cassidy constantly kills him and brings him back over and over again. And lastly the mimic. Even though Afton is stuck in purgatory or has moved on to hell depending on what you believe, his metaphorical spirit lives on in the mimic. The mimic continues what Afton started. The mimic tortures Vanessa mentally and brings agony upon those he kills and their families just as Afton once did. It doesn’t matter if you think you’ve gotten rid of him. It doesn’t matter if you think he’s dead and gone. It doesn’t matter if you throw him back to the depths of hell itself. He always comes back.
