I felt bad for Wander this entire episode. His curiosity made him obsessed with the box and what’s in it. And what makes it worse is that there wasn’t even anything in there. It was all just a dumb test, and what even was the test!? To see if Wander would let his curiosity get to him. If so, then what was the POINT?! All it did was, quote unquote, give strength to his character.
It’s like, you know it’s their first time knowing who Wander is. Cause they should’ve known Wander isn’t someone who needs to be taught this kind of lesson.
I get the impression they need to feel superior, but are actually quite cowardly. They'd never do this to Hater or anyone that could actually use the lesson, because he'd just beat them up. Thus doing this to good guys that already have self control gives them a feeling of moral authority.
His face was like that before, so he might just be oblivious. Considering they tend to have their "heads in the clouds," I could see that he is just slow to react.
