Great review. I just came from an early showing with my wife. I didn’t watch your review until after I saw the movie. It was an incredible journey and I loved it! I loved it all! There were parts of the movie where people in the theater were laughing, clapping, and I found myself with huge tears running down my face at the end of the movie but a smile on my face. Thank goodness for Baz and Austin. What an amazing film. Thanks for your videos. God bless.

I do totally agree with EVERYTHING you said, Ashley....Austin has set the bar soooo high for anyone else to play the character of Elvis, it really felt like I was having a difficult time in my head of differentiating the real Elvis and Austin. You do get lost in the story. So kudos to Austin, he deserves an award for sure. The only things different I can say is that I do wish the main girlfriends in his life would have been portrait or even somehow been included a little in the movie. Also, I wish Elvis' spiritual journey would have been shown a little more, as that was a big part of his personal life. Otherwise it was really amazing and I can't wait to watch it over and over again to really grasp the incredibly creative details and way of telling the story. It also makes you really appreciate all the detailed knowledge we have of his life and events to give a cool understanding of what Baz was doing with it and the creativity of it. Thank you for this post. Loved the movie ❤️👍🏻👍🏻

Great review! I agree with what you said about new fans coming from this movie. I saw a cool moment on Instagram from the Toronto premier showing the other day where a young twenty something year old black female was holding a vinyl copy of Elvis's How Great Thou Art gospel album waiting to get an autograph from Austin. That gave me hope that he can and is attracting the younger generation.👍

My husband and I are going Friday night. I have read a few bad reviews from critics but I don’t agree with most critics anyway. I hope the movie does great. I am hoping it makes tons of money. Not sure it can beat Top Gun in profit though. It could IF all the Elvis fans around the world would go see it. I sincerely hope they do. Future generations need to know about Elvis. It’s important to remember that this story is told from TP’s POV, so it is not an accurate, chronological retelling of Elvis’ life story. Such a to-the-point review! I agree with all things mentioned!
That was one great movie! Loved the fact that it was focused mainly on Elvis and his need for performing, for singing the songs and music he liked. His dislikes, his aspirations, his ambitions. It was refreshing that they didn’t spend time on the “spicy” stuff, whether that had to do with drugs or affairs (things that were mentioned but in such a diligent way, not to offend either Elvis or his family). The accuracy and the details of each costume and scenery, just amazing! Felt familiar! By far the best biopic of his life, with undoubtedly great performances, smart scenario and amazing cinematography! You need to watch it, even if you are not a fan!

Holy cow, I'm sooo glad you did this! Thank you so much, Ashley!
I expected this movie to focus more on the complicated relationship between Elvis & Colonel Tom Parker. Baz Luhrmann confirmed this in a 2020 Australian news clip interview.
I agree with you about keeping an open mind and the music.
As my Mom said, "Nobody looks like Elvis. Nobody sings like Elvis."
I think that's not just keeping an open mind but being realistic about it.
Gladys Presley was a loyal and hardworking lady. So I'm glad to hear she's given the personality that rings more true to how those who knew her claimed she really was in real life.
This was so awesome, Ashley! As predicted, I really enjoyed this & you only served to amp up my anticipation for the movie!

I loved the real footage in the end. Unchained Melody with Elvis really loved. Elvis was used and abused by his Manager. Too bad when Elvis fired him, it didn't last at all. The paper with all the money Elvis owed him was just sooo bad. The Manager showed his true colors in the movie. Gambling and sold Elvis off to feed his addicting habit. Worked Elvis and made him unhappy. Elvis was promised to go places and it never took place. Greedy Manager was only thinking of his addiction. The part where he says to Elvis, I am you and you are me. We are the same person. I would give Austin a 10 out of a 1-10 rating. Hanks played his character well too. All in all I liked it that it didn't dwell on all the negative things taking place around Elvis. Elvis was so trusting in the beginning and his Manager took advantage of that. Austin looked very close to Elvis. Especially when he had his hair black and tanned. Great movie even though fast paced!!

    Hello Ashley,
thank you for your new video!
First of all: I like the way you talk about the respective topics, you have a very friendly and calm demeanor. This, in my opinion, sets you apart from the majority of posts on RUclips.
I actually had mixed feelings about the film at first, and thought that another cliché would be produced with the usual stereotypes about Elvis. In the meantime, however, I'm really looking forward to seeing the film, also and especially because it wasn't produced in the classic (and often seen) linear narrative style and obviously a lot of value was placed on attention to detail.
I would call myself a "die hard" fan and I really hope that other fans will be a little more open and see the film for what it is: a chance for us to experience a little more of Elvis in an exciting new production and as a chance for all non-Elvis fans to experience the importance of Elvis and what he has contributed to modern music and culture.
And of course Austin Butler isn't Elvis, that's just not possible. No one can be 100% someone else. But that's not necessary if you're able to open up and just follow the character. After watching the trailers several times, like you, I also had the feeling that Austin Butler was becoming an Elvis in his own way that everyone should actually be able to follow. What would be the alternative? Better a film with Austin Butler as Elvis than no film with Elvis as Elvis!
Anyway, I'm really looking forward to tomorrow's preview and will embark on the adventure and bring 10 friends (none of whom are fans)!
Thanks again for your great work!
Greetings from Germany (hence the perhaps unusual grammar)
    Kai

“Elvis,” can be classed as a biographical portrait a cradle-to-grave story of a little boy from Tupelo who became a pop-culture sensation and sad cautionary tale. Elvis” is basically a compilation of musical-biopic conventions. Luhrmann is an maximalists director the movie traces Elvis’s trajectory through Parker the colonel is the villain of the piece. They meet when Elvis is a young As soon as the colonel sees Elvis perform he realizes that this kid is a gold mine. The colonel swoops in seduces Elvis and puts him under his exploitative sway. The rest is history one that Luhrmann tracks from obscurity to Graceland and finally Las Vegas. I think it's necessary to watch this film a few times in order to have a clear view of it. What is clear is that this film has a lot of respect for Elvis as an icon . I like your review.👍🙏

How good or bad is the accuracy, I know it seems petty but I get itchy when things are wrong about Elvis or his life (don't ask me why) it's weird I only get like that with Elvis... I get so frustrated when non fans just talk about the untrue stuff and treat him like a caricature when his life was so much more complex

I saw the movie last night! I think your review was spot on! I love how you broke it down into topics. I loved how the music was woven throughout. I liked how his movies were shown in a montage, so cool. The only thing I didn’t care for was Jerry S. saying the Colonel was an alien and implying that Elvis knew about that while he was alive. I think that should have just been reported at the end when they said the Colonel died. I wasn’t sure how they would handle Elvis’s death, but I started crying, knowing it was coming. I thought they would show the Colonel at end in his hospital bed dying, but they didn’t. I have tickets for Friday and Saturday and am sure I will see more great things!! I saw it yesterday, it is so fast paced like an action movie or someone on acid/speed. You can tell its in Baz's style, Parts of me wanted to see all the scenes in full and not the back in forth dream like state. I think the best part of the movie was the first part, If only they gave us time to enjoy the concert footage like in the movie "I Walk The Line" I think Baz has it going back in forth so fast is because it doesn't give you time to indulge in it to tell if its good or bad, its like a high speed train for almost all the movie, except for the comeback special, but even that had a lot of back in forth shots. I didn't care to much about the modern music mixed in, I thought it will only date the movie in a few years, and it took you out of the Elvis time period, our music wasn't around back then, but I guess he did the same thing in M Rouge. Is it good? I think there were really great parts that moved so fast you didn't get to enjoy them. There was a lot of stuff I didn't like that distracted you from the story (like I said it was like someone on speed) all I was thinking was so one on drugs and high would love tripping out watching this movie. I guess you can compare it to "Alice in Wonderland". I think i'm more interested in seeing all the music scenes uncut.

I agree. I've just saw it in my language that didn't sound good to me 😕. I'd prefer to re-watch in the original language. Anyway I liked it, especially the second part (from the 68 comeback). Austin is great but narration is too fast, especially for those unfamiliar with the story. My friend had to ask me something more at the end, because she had missed in some parts. Baz takes you in a psychedelic trip but sometimes it's too much and this doesn't involve me emotionally as it should.

When I first saw the trailer for this, I was "cautiously optimistic". Not much has changed there, but I'm hoping to enjoy it. All I ask is that they don't run the usual narrative of "he just did drugs and died in the 70s". There was a lot more to Elvis from 1977 until 1977 and I'm just hoping they do some of that justice.

Especially the 68 Comeback and International Hotel music scenes. Thanks to you, in the shot of Elvis and Priscilla in the living room/music room while still married, I knew the stained glass peacocks were in correct for a prior to '74 scene, but that's OK. As a 46 year old I didn’t grow up in Elvis time. My family was big fans though. I can say the end of the movie how it’s handled is the most emotional experience I’ve ever had in a theatre. Even people a lot younger than me I’ve heard about them crying too. That scene was perfection. Elvis is and will always be the greatest entertainer in human history.

Thank you for that, Ashley! I am busting at the seams to see the movie and I will on Friday. I've read a few professional reviews and a couple of them say the movie goes so fast, you can barely breathe. One guy didn't like Baz's style for that reason and he wanted to see more of Elvis' life story just told straight. He said it played like a long running music video. Funny you mention Gladys. He made some kind of comment about her barely even being in the movie. I know she died early in E's life, but he made it sound like suddenly she was there....and then wasn't. For me, I already know Elvis' life story, so I'm not so concerned about that. I'm expecting a lot of flashiness based on the trailers. Thanks again for your review. ~Gloria

@@ashleysadventures Okay, Ms. Ashley, I saw the movie yesterday and I, wait for it....LOVED IT! Even with the nit-picky things throughout, I still loved it. I cried like a baby. That scene where he goes off on the Colonel during a show in Vegas...hmm, not too sure about that. I have not seen any proof that that incident ever happened, and if anyone knows about this incident, please, enlighten me. I'm thinking artistic license for that scene. You know what? I wish E had told off the Colonel, (just not in that way). I WISH Elvis in real life had said to the Colonel...bye bye after he was done with the movies, and never looked back. I thought about buying the Alanna Nash book about the Colonel, and never did because I thought it would just make me even madder at him. But I broke down and bought it online after seeing the movie. I'm glad I saw it on the big screen. Austin Butler - magnifico! I will forgive Mr. Hanks for playing someone I, errr, don't like, to keep it nice. Like you said, I love me some Tom Hanks. There's one thing in the movie...where Parker walks around a deserted casino with his drip while telling the story. An eerie kind of weird were those scenes, but somehow it fit. Still loved it though!! And I love Elvis...FOREVER! ~Gloria

God bless you for that thoughtful review Ashley. I loved the movie. I went in with my expectations level. Not too high & not too low. I felt like I was on an emotional roller coaster and by the time I walked out , I felt like I was in a daze. I agree with how you become so immersed in it that you just think, see, hear and feel like your watching Elvis. Since his fans know his story, I was able to sit back & just enjoy it. One feels his emotions because we love Elvis & I felt like we were watching him happy, confused & so hurt he’d be crying at times & it affects you. Besides Austin’s obvious talents with the singing, dancing and inflections of Elvis, his acting skills in just regular scenes were so good. He actually was crying and I was crying because it was so believable as Elvis , I just wanted to reach up & give him a hug. I’m going back tomorrow to see it again because I had already reserved seats for 2 days & I’ll have enough points for us to see it on the XD screen which is this gigantic screen that’s sort of circular. I agree with you also about the death. It was respectful, emotional and quite poignant & the music associated with it started me crying because I knew it was coming. The one item that I have heard from almost 100% of people who saw it stated it went by so fast it didn’t seem like a long movie. I kept hoping there’d be more. So, I think if you love Elvis, go see it & support the true story & not all the myths, folklore & gossip that’s been out there for 45 years since his death. I’m happy Baz made this movie and I believe as the Presley family did, that it will be the Elvis movie that will be historic. Sorry this was so long. See ya at the movies 🍿 🍿🍿🎸🕺🏻🕺🏻🎤❤️

We saw it at a special premiere. Enjoyed it and would love to see it again. I do think your dream sequence is spot on. I think this and the modern music is more for the new generation... a creative way to tell the story. The 68 special are my favorite scenes. Austin is epic and the realism of the 68 special and Vegas shows are spot on. I was 10 when Elvis died and I remember my mom and aunt were heartbroken. Elvis' command of the stage and his "showmanship" are unmatched.

YES! It did feel like I was watching a play. I loved that aspect of it. But, then again, I watched the interviews with Baz and knew from the start what this would be going into it. You don’t go to a movie for accuracy. You go for the experience and the story being told. Those concert moments were insane! And Austin Butler was absolutely phenomenal 🥰

My 30 yr old daughter n I watched the movie last night. She liked Elvis as a child but was not obsessed as her Mother was. Watching her reaction to this movie made it even more magical for myself. She came out of this movie with a whole new respect for Elvis which made me very emotional on top of all the fantastic acting I had just witnessed. We talked about the movie the whole time driving back home in the car. She was shocked and very emotional about what Elvis went through as a rock God and a human being. You will want your kleenex, you will need to hold back your anger, it is a rollercoaster for sure. Tom Hanks, first time ever, the villain for sure. Austin Butler killed it!!! If he does not get an Oscar for his performance, like Lisa Marie I will eat my foot!!! I want to see it again, because it does move fast and I know there are scenes I would like to see again. The fashion, music, and the detail is spot on. You will leave the movie exhausted. Emotions run high. But from watching my daughter's reaction, the movie not only touches in on the older generation, but the younger generation!!!Thank you Baz. So much respect for you!! TCB Forever!!!

Just saw it last night and I could watch it a hundred more times and get something different. Your review was spot on. The end was done beautifully and after Austin’s performance nobody else can compare. He literally transformed into Elvis and it was hauntingly beautiful. Especially during the Vegas years. I loved Gladys part too as well as Priscilla. And I totally agree with you it didn’t feel like a 3 hour movie. I hope the younger generation is coming out to watch and I hope it makes all the money because it was a journey from beginning to end. What a ride.

Thank you for this video, Ashley! I couldn't watch the movie at the time of its release, so your POV was really helpful. I don;t usually make comments, but for this I will. I am not a big fan of Baz Luhrmann's style but overall I LOVED this film, mainly because of Austin Butler's performance! He was just fantastic! When I learnt how much he dedicated himself to this role, I grew to like him even more. Oscar please! I loved the sets and the attention to detail! And yes, we see a glimpse of the upstairs bedroom! The Vegas performances were beautifully done, but Austin really nailed the moves in the 68 comeback special, even down to the shaking of his hand before grabbing the mike! This cast really worked on this movie and I am grateful it was made for history! I do have some thoughts about the storyline; perhaps those who know more may share their view?
Was his Mom Gladys really into hard liquor as shown? Did they really cuss a lot in their home conversations? Did EP really start on pills on the road pre-army? Did he try to leave the Colonel right after the 68 special? Is this story suggesting a mob involvement with the Colonel in Vegas? And who was it who supposedly told Jerry Schilling about the Colonel's legal status? Was Jerry even there during the 68 special? Personally, I think Jerry was made to look too relevant in this story; I feel Joe Esposito was more like the one in that position. And of course, we all know that when he got that jet plane, Priscilla was no longer in Graceland. I can understand why so many detractors do not like this movie. But I love how it focused on Priscilla as the most important woman in his life after Gladys, even though there were so many girlfriends through out. Inaccuracies and all, I think this film is the best ever made about Elvis, so far. I wish there was a part 2 that could focus more on Elvis as a person, and not just the performer! He was just a beautiful, talented and flawed person. Gonna watch it again on the big screen tomorrow!

My mom and I just saw the movie tonight and WOW!! It was amazing!! The quickest 2 1/2 hours ever. I agree with what you said, there’s just so much stuff going through my head that I know I’ll forget parts of the movie. I loved how Baz stuck “Easter Eggs” around. Some only Elvis fans would know about and some that you would just notice, like the real pic of a young Elvis on Gladys’s dresser. Also, the ending was PERFECT! If I would have been at home, I would have had tears streaming down my face. I was able to just stop them with my finger at the theater.😉. I can’t imagine how hard it was for Baz to decide how to end the movie but I loved it! Also, Austin singing Unchained Melody and the way they made him look was haunting. Austin better win an Oscar for this!❤️⚡️

I’m a bit concerned here, I’m already crying when you’re talking about his death in the movie, how I’m going to make it 3 hours at the movie theatre holding the flow of tears back. Great review, I’m glad you mentioned again that this movie is about Parker and Elvis’s relation and Parker’s point of view, that explains a lot also and makes sense that some chapters or sides of Elvis’ life aren’t represented. The trailer maybe makes us thing differently so it’s important to say it. I hope the dvd will be filled with extra scenes and documentaries and ne we seen before images and and and the 4 hour long director cut. Elvis is back in the spotlight, where he belongs, and it’s made with taste, respect and his closed family approval♥️

I just know we're going to have a legion of New fans, and that's going to keep his legacy alive! I hope it's a great success box office wise, because Baz has said if it is, he will work on getting unreleased video and music out to us for his next project! That's what we've been begging for for years! There's alot of video of him that wasn't used in the movies of That's The Way It Is and Elvis on Tour! Stumbled across your channel, and so glad I did. Excellent review, and bang on. Agree with your decision to not spoil the ending. It had me in tears, as it always does whenever I see that bit of video. Also made me emotional to see people I attended the movie with, who are not big Elvis fans, touched by that scene, and the movie in general. This movie was so incredible, for so many reasons. It provides clarity on so many issues that have been misstated and misunderstood (I.E Elvis' relationship with the Colonel, Elvis' drug dependency, Elvis and the black community, etc). I think this film has certainly helped to change the narrative for those who's knowledge of Elvis was based solely on tabloid articles, or salacious authors who only presented one side of the story. This movie makes no excuses for the bad stuff, but provides much needed context into his life, and why it played out the way it did. This has been so sorely needed since he died.
Great job. Cheers from a massive Elvis fan in Canada.

Great review! I agreed with everything. I've seen the movie 4 times, and scenes keep playing in my head. I miss Austin/Elvis so much, I have to see it again. You can really appreciate what a great actor Austin is when you watch him doing interviews - it's kind of a shock seeing him looking and sounding like himself. It's now one month since you did this review, and those negative people are still being just as vocal. I find it very distressing, especially coming from his own family. I can't understand this obsession with "inaccuracies" and worrying that this movie will rewrite history. No it won't! There have been lots of Elvis movies, all of them inaccurate regarding facts - did they "destroy his legacy?" No! I can't understand why people want to obsess over THIS movie; I don't recall so much negativity about all the others. This movie really brings Elvis the human being and artist to life!

I can't imagine how much time he spent learning all of Elvis' moves and mannerisms etc. Great respect shown! Gladys was a bit surprising. I don't know how they know that she actually drank alcohol. Maybe so. But she (and Elvis) did have a gene that predisposed them to liver and lung problems. This was the alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency. Gladys mother had it too.

However, I was disappointed that Linda Thompson didn't even get a mention, and considering she was with him for four years it was like she never existed! It's a film with a strong visual impact, good choice of music, but it did not fully involved me because so little of the real Elvis was shown: his childhood, his love for music, his shyness, his heart in relationships with the people around him (family, Priscilla, friends, musicians) . It's a nice psychedelic and colorful trip but the Colonel's vision of history and Luhrmann's style in my opinion do not allow us to fully understand who Elvis was. Austin Butler and Tom Hanks are incredible! As a fan, I have accepted Baz creativity, but I think this film does not allow those unfamiliar with Elvis to realize his true greatness and why he is still so loved today. This is my first impression... I want to watch it again.

I'm more so a Baz Luhrmann fan than I am an Elvis fan so it's amazing to go in and see the movie with fresh eyes and no expectations whatsoever (I only seen one trailer and done) and left the movie extremely satisfied. Is it a great movie? Yep, Baz's best since Moulin Rogue, it has issues? Absolutely, but for the most part I really enjoyed the movie. The scene where Elvis sang "Baby Let's Play House" put a big fat smile on my face, I'm so proud for Austin. From being a C-list actor in Nickelodeon and Disney Channel appearing mostly as guest stars and supporting roles to playing Elvis, man's gotta great future. It's not one of my favourite movies of the year but certainly one of the best theater experience of my life. And I got to watch it only with 4 people in my theater which is sad cuz people are really missing out something cool. If Bohemian Rhapsody can get a lot of recognition, so could Elvis. Both Freddie Mercury and Elvis are legends so they both deserved recognition for their own biopic movie. First actor to be getting an Oscar buzz this year!! Let's get it Austin!! 🙌🙌🙌

Aaahhh! Your review has be even more rev’d up to see it!!!! I’m not gonna lie, I’m a huge Elvis and Linda fan and am a little worried they have completely deleted the 5 years they were together. Her book is what made me a fan, and then I started listening to his music. Please tell me, is Linda in this movie?! 🫣😁 PS I love all the women Elvis was with! All beautiful in their own way.

You're going to love it! This story is Elvis and the Col's relationship from his POV, instead of a bio of Elvis's life. Linda and other long term ladies weren't included (except for Ginger!), I think it would get confusing for the average viewer if there were several different girlfriends then breakups. Thanks for tuning in, let me know what you think of the movie!

A shame that June JUANICO and Anita Wood were eliminated. They both played
a important part in the beginning of his
career. They both had a impact on ELVIS.
They both were favorites of Gladys and
were welcomed into the Presley family.
And the...never a Col. never a Tom, never
a Parker...did frequently interfer and tried to
      always control ELVIS'S relationship with
both JUNE and ANITA, he wanted to stop
what could have been between them from
the beginning. Both JUNE and Anita are
very sweet Lady's and are to be respected
for enduring the circumstances with total
Grace, at a very young time in their life. It
had to be very heartbreaking for both and
ELVIS as well. I can imagine he as well, as
these beautiful ladies, held a special place
      in their 💕 ♾️ 😎 TLC⚡TCB⚡. 6-20-22

Linda and ELVIS were together 4 years.
Like a lot of relationships, it was good ....
      until it wasn't.

Well done Ashley! You're review is spot on. I went into the theater and was actually nervous. I never expected the movie to be so good. And Austin Butler is without question the best Elvis since Elvis. Kurt Russell has been de-throned.

Just took my mom and she was crying like she did in 1977 when Elvis died. What an epic movie!
