The snow has insulating properties and this is now mother nature keeps the ground warmer in the winter. At the very cold parts of Russia, one can see snow being thrown at the places where the house meets the ground. As long as the temperature remains cold, and the snow does not melt, you can put a lot of snow in such a way so the air should not be able to go under the house and you can investigate more standard solutions, like packing insulation, meanwhile.
Overhead drone shots of the water’s depth freeze stages is amazing. If only I could paint, it would make a great wall covering! Your ‘woolen’ clothing will be a God-send during the cold months! 🥰
From a Norwegian neighbor with cold toes in an arctic cabin: I feel you, cold floors are the worst, because no matter how well you can heat the room - they manage to stay cold! Big (!) floormats made in wool are out there, even IKEA has them, and they both insulate and breathe so that you stay warmer and run less risk if any issues caused by lack of airflow. Also: thick (!!!) felted wool slippers. Complete gamechanger. Stay warm, och glad Advent!
I can relate with you too! 🥶 Our 120yr old house has badly renovated (sub) floors and they get cold! +5-10 max when it's freezing outside. Thick slippers, wool socks and wool carpets on the floors are lifesavers (or toe savers...). I also stuffed more Isolina linen insulation in the gap between the floors and walls and then taped it shut with window paper tape.
Thick carpets in the kitchen will temporarily keep the cold at bay! You could also put a layer of cardboard underneath the carpets, which will also boost the insulation.
THANK YOU KALLE!! Sir, you just changed my life! I saw your mixer and loved it and ended up going down the rabbit hole of Electroluxe/ Ankarsrum mixers and I am smitten! They are AMAZING and SO quiet! I was looking for a do it all machine that could also make butter because we have 3 Jersey cows. This looks like the perfect machine for that! Wonderful! Thank you for sharing your mundane everyday living, You never know who will benefit!
There’s always something that goes wrong in the winter. The pipes burst in our cabin last winter. Thankfully it could be fixed from under the house and we didn’t have to destroy our new bathroom. We have heated cables and insulation and are just an hour north of Uppsala, which is not north in comparison to you. I hope it works out well for you 😊
Right? 😍 The previous owners left it for me! If you want to check it out, that measuring cup is actually one of the seven new photo prints in our print shop: kalleflodin.myshopify.com
As nutty as this sounds, what about spraying some sand (I hear it is relatively inexpensive) into the hole to plug it up. Sand is good at insulating. This is temporary until summer. Cover up the hole after with a board and pack with snow. Then buy a thick rug for your kitchen. This way you can forget about it until June when the weather is better. Then, get a a digger or something and try to tackle the problem from the outside, rather than destroying your kitchen!
Use foam insulation around bottom of Cabin for winter and them pack snow around it to cover it. That's what we did w our A frame cabin here in Utah U.S.
As a temporary fix for your floorboards, you can get a product called Draught Ex which is a floorboard gap filler. It will literally fill in the gaps between your floorboards until you find a permanent solution
Oh I relate to so much 😊 I make RUclips videos in a similar spirit as you about our life living semi off-grid in our tiny house in the remote west -- Isn't it amazing how to live like we do, that we have to become electricians, plumbers, engineers, and building experts - it's wild! I'm so sorry about your anxiety about the kitchen floor, it's so scary when your living space is subject to all these variables and unknowns but guaranteed, you will figure it out (and you likely won't have to tear out the whole new kitchen you just installed). Sending my best from my little corner of the world to yours
Hi kalle. I’m sorry to hear your struggle from the kitchen. A temporary solution could be to put caulk in between the floorboards so the cracks are filled up and no cold air can sneak in. Something silicone would do the trick. It’s water resistant once it dries so the elements won’t effect it.
Put some boards up to stop as much draft as possible and make a large or a few small rag rugs to cover the boards to stop air coming up as much. That’s what the old timers would do. Good luck
my mom always made twice as much batter as needed (I got 5 siblings) and spooned up portions on tea-platters for all of us. You just made me realize I need to make lemon sponge cake for my daughters sleep-over this weekend :D!!
Here in Canada we put plastic under the Insulation to seal out air and prevent insulation falling out. Underneath in spring /summer.. Maybe spray foam if you have it there
I don't think here in Sweden to do it like that because of chance of mold within the insulation. Not sure, i'm still figuring out the whole building in Sweden, compared to the Netherlands its way diffrent.
Did u use waterproof plates under the kitchen floor? it looks a little bit bent. Otherwise you can always take out the couple of floor pieces where it is bad at this moment. put away the baseboard from the kitchen so you can reach under. take away the planks that needs to be gone. Fix the plates that are bent by waterproof plates and maybe with more support so it cannot fall down again. i think its every 30cm it needs support same with plasterboard. Insulate again, i don't know if u used 2 layers or one layer, because if you use two layers you can cover the cracks asswell for better air tight. Otherwise if you have some quenstions, contact me. I'm pretty new in Sweden and trying to understand all building standards here, but have been a carptender in the Netherlands.
Fireplace draws air in. As the smoke goes up, new air needs to replace it. So you cannot and should not avoid airflow into your house. But where it comes from is important for your comfort. Maybe an emergency solution is to push lots of snow against outside walls. It insulates and doesn't let air flow in that much. For frozen pipes, you can let water drip from the faucet. That is a pretty good way to prevent pipes from bursting if you cannot keep the heater on all the time.
Cold draught solution, perhaps buy a few meters of linoleum which is intended for floors, and place a rug on top, or invest in one of those picknic blankets with non slippery thermal bottom and warm fabrics on top, and again place your rug on top. you can then also use this foldable blanket in other seasons for the actual picknicks out in nature. Blessings and much luck.🍀
You can stuff felting between the planks, wouldn't look very good but should work for temporary insulation. And then can hide possible ugliness with a big rug on the floor. Only a rug might not work very well as it wouldn't cover all the flooring. Covering the hole outside the cabin should help too, but in this case I wouldn't recommend doing it using snow, as you have a problem with frozen pipes. Plus, I really admire your dedication with the cabin and the life style. I felt an instant regret the moment I've seen your channel beause I couldn't dare what you have done when I was able to. Plans are still on though, maybe we will be neighbours at some point in life. Cheers!
Love hearing the ice sing and speak...would make wonderful meditation or ASMR videos! You eating the cake was hilarious! Who needs dinner? You're an adult...you wanna have cake for dinner? Do it! As for the floor, I echo some others and vote for blown-in insulation. Seems the easiest solution.
Or maybe stopping the floor with insulation in the cracks, as a temporary solution. And in the spring, dig out under the house, to access and repair and re-insulate from under the house.
It would really Benefit you if you hung some black out curtains!! It would help out Tremendously with keeping the heat in and more area rugs. The kitchen turned out beautifully.
Hi Kalle, could you possibly lay some floor insulation and put floor covering on top, like vinyl, cork etc. I know from experience that this works well. Love your vlogs!❤
The sounds of the ice is interesting! You are brave sitting on the ice you mentioned was not safe yet! If you could get a heavy rug for the winter for your floor, you wouldn’t be as aware of the cold air coming in. That is too bad the bottom came loose underneath. I am sure you will come up with a solution, Kalle! Love from Pennsylvania, USA💕🌷🐻
I’m sorry to hear about your kitchen floor. I wouldn’t pull up the floorboards. I would look into spray foaming insulation under your floor boards. You would have to cut part of the bottom of your cabin to do it. This process would be handled by professional insulators. Or in the summer jack up the cabin high enough to get underneath to address the insulation problem. Again, there are professionals that do this sort of stuff.
I hope you decorate the house for Christmas and enjoy your little one on that special holiday make precious memories with your beautiful family❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Maybe a temporary fix would be a thick area rug on the kitchen floor. Or the old fashioned process of stuffing cracks with newspaper. This'll buy you some time to research what needs to be done when the temps warm up and your days are longer...bales of straw around the cabins foundation all around the house outside may aid in limiting drafts too. Good luck to you.
OMG, I'm sorry that you have to battle with so many 'inconveniences' (to put it mildly), nothing worse than not to have somewhere warm and cosy (and not drafty) to return to when it is so cold outside. Especially with a small baby ... there are so many good suggestions in the comments though (haybales around the cabin, thick rug, woll for the cracks, spray foam ....), I'm sure they will be a good solution until you can fix it for good in the warmer weather. I would love wild life photos (squirrels, foxes, birds ...) in all seasons 🐺🦊🦌🐗🐿🦔🦅🦉🪶 all the best for all your endeavours Btw, love your parenting (style) and Christine's reflections on schools and everything (from your last video) - that's my only regret for my two daughters in retrospect: that I sent them to a normal school as at the time I did not have a plan B. Hej! Jag har växt upp lite norr om där du är och vänta med golvet till det är varmt, du kanske kan komma åt det utifrån då? Förslag: lägg en stor matta med en filt under så länge, och tofflor!!! Tack för allt vackert du delar!
💚Do you know anyone with a big trolley jack, depending on how close to the external wall the collapse is, would it reach far enough to temporarily lift it until spring/summer💚
Is it possible to shovel snow tightly around the house to prevent the airflow? I've heard tightly packed snow is being used as insulation. But I'm no expert whatsoever and hope, you will solve the problem. Good luck 🤞
I really love your videos and your lifestyle. My dream is to buy a cabin as well some day in the future. :) My question is: If it is so cold in your cabin, aren´t you scared of mold? Or dosen´t it happen to a wood cabin?
How unsurprising that Swedish Companies still don't know how to deal with the cold climate. So many mistakes have been made while laying that pipe. First one they didn't check the minimum depth that water pipes should be dug at to prevent freezing. Second, you kitchen is not warm enough to prevent freezing the inside pipes so that is a problem. There are regulations for this, for instance in Norrbotten the minimum dig depth for water pipes is 2.5m to prevent freezing. Its really beyond embarrassing that these kind of things happen still. But that's Sweden in a nutshell. Do whatever is the least amount of work so they can have Fika. You just got ripped off. And as for your kitchenfloor problem, just shovel snow infront of that hole and keep packing it. It will insulate it and be fine for now. Put a rug on the floor there to reduce the draft.
Hvis du har nok plass fra den side du viser på video under gulvet legg 1 eller 2 Jacks og løfte den opp. På sommeren ta opp noe bord og spikre den på plass.
Put bails of hay all around the outside of your house. It would be nice if in the spring you could jack up the house to build a foundation under it. Having a cellar would be nice, you could put a wood stove down there that would heat up the floor in the winter. I know that is expensive, but I believe you can do it! 💙
You need to seal up that opening that goes under the cabin so air cannot vent thru the openings in the floor. Put soft insulation, plastic and then pile up snow around the cabin base.
Window coverings of fabric for nighttime would keep some cold out and look cozy blocking the dark holes (of the windows) with colour, texture and pattern . The warmth curtains would bring inside your cabin would be cozy and inviting!
En temporer lösning är att du isolerar från utsidan där du filmade och på våren/sommaren bör du försöka gräva ut så mycket att du kommer åt att fästa/kila fast bottenplattan
Hellooo!!!! Wondrful video!!! I'm sorry about the kitchen floor... Just an idea for a print - I really like the spot you have next to the fireplace on the hammock. Just a cosy place someone could imagine being at when they look at the print. Not sure if this will be a best seller, but just an idea. Happy to see you having fun on the ice 😊😊😊. Thank you once again!!!
I know this isn't very professional but for a quick fix I would shove a wide board into the hole. I would push it in flat and then turn it so the width is vertical and maybe when you twist it that would push up the section that fell. Maybe even jig saw the board so that just the 2 ends are wider than the middle. The one end will push the subfloor with insulation up as the other end acts as a paddle for you to be able to turn the board up.. I hope you can understand what I am trying to describe. Maybe after it gets up you can shove a big rock under it to hold since I know wood isn't good to have direct contact with the ground. Or is this silly?
Kalle, you have shown us great deal of nature! What a wonderful ice!❤ For the floor: in old houses you fill cracks with long rope (different thicknesses) and clue it with transparent wooden clue if needed. Outside problem: styrofoam is the best solution for the time beeing to cover hole.
Testa tryck in isolering från hålet ute och in under golvet just nu under vintern. Kanske hjälper, sen täpp till hål osv i grunden så att inte kall luft letar sig under så lätt.
Thank you so much for again such an amazing and inspiring video! Sorry about the floor.. As a suggestion for the store, maybe the dogs as a print.. or other animals around the cabin?
Bravo! Enjoy your meal! This little house in the woods that you are building - do you need permission from an architect for it? Do you need to make a project for this property? And how much does it cost in Sweden? Or do you not need documents for a new building on your site and you can build as you want? Thanks for your answer. Good luck. Hi Kristin.🍩
Definitely want to buy a print, but can't afford one at the moment. Could you fill that hole with rocks and expanding foam for now, and put a rug over the flooring?
Dear Kalle, so sorry about the kitchen floor, I can totally sympathise, must have been a shock to discover this. But .... no matter what you record and what your intentions are for your videos your editing is again such a treat! Your works have a very special calming and soothing quality to them. Thank you ⚘️
How about at least temporerally close the hole under house with insulation foam. Similar to installation one for windows. It expands and would close the gap between beams and ground
Maybe a print of christmas in or outside the cabin? Love this video. You made me laugh when you are the cake instead of making dinner and when you said it took 6 hours to put up the planks. You’re doing great!
Would it be any way possible to block the cold air from the outside with styrox (this is what we called it in Finland, it's made of polystyrene) until spring comes? If you could some how tie it againts the floor panels to prevent air flow, it would be probably get you through winter.

I LOVE the sounds the ice makes when it sings! I first heard it from Jonna Jinton. It's magical!
Wow that mixer looks like it does a better job than a kitchen aid mixer! I love that little side scraper! I love baking ❤
Especially sourdough 😊
A picture of the scene inside the cabin, with the fire going, really capturing the vibe.
Your cake mixer is a clever design. I hate having to scrape the bowl on my Kitchenaid all the time.
Kale add a picture of the frozen lake from your opening on this video. The blue colors are mesmerizing.
We're working on those at this very moment 😉
Thick carpets in the kitchen will temporarily keep the cold at bay! You could also put a layer of cardboard underneath the carpets, which will also boost the insulation.
for a few months you could seal the floor in the kitchen from above by applying a layer of vinyl and remove it later in spring.
You could temporarily lay a rug in the kitchen? It really would tie the room together ;)
I already have a rug, but maybe it has to be a bit bigger 😅
I was just writing him the same idea..
I was about to say the same.
I got that big Lebowski reference 😂
Same. A very large and thick area rug that would cover most of the kitchen floor…until you can address the primary issue.
Wow thats actually mind blowing amazing, thanks for sharing this.

@@KalleFlodin Ja, precis. Finns ju som snöre också, blir nog ett coolt inslag i golvet.
Temporary fix for kitchen floor. Thick rugs.
Hvis du har nok plass fra den side du viser på video under gulvet legg 1 eller 2 Jacks og løfte den opp. På sommeren ta opp noe bord og spikre den på plass.
I dont have long term fix but wondered if a thick floormat would helpyouget thru the winter
Yes that would at least make a bit of a patch for now 😊
Put bails of hay all around the outside of your house.
Spray in foam
❤❤

I'm happy you liked it Krasi 🥰 Hmm interesting, never thought about that spot in that way! Thank you for the idea! 😍
Welcome!!! 😊😊😊👍👍👍
En tanke är att du kanske inte har installerat avluftning i avloppssystemet?
Kalle, you have shown us great deal of nature! What a wonderful ice!❤ For the floor: in old houses you fill cracks with long rope (different thicknesses) and clue it with transparent wooden clue if needed. Outside problem: styrofoam is the best solution for the time beeing to cover hole.
Testa tryck in isolering från hålet ute och in under golvet just nu under vintern. Kanske hjälper, sen täpp till hål osv i grunden så att inte kall luft letar sig under så lätt.
Det sjunger i isen. Så härligt ❤
Bästa ljudet 🥰
Can you lay down a thin insulation on the floor . Like the kind they use to insulate van floors. Then lay the rug over top
Thank you 🎉
Enjoy all your videos
How about some photos of the dogs!!
That's coming! 😃
The dogs in front of the fireplace
The dogs in the snowy forest
Thank you so much for again such an amazing and inspiring video! Sorry about the floor.. As a suggestion for the store, maybe the dogs as a print.. or other animals around the cabin?
Bravo! Enjoy your meal! This little house in the woods that you are building - do you need permission from an architect for it? Do you need to make a project for this property? And how much does it cost in Sweden? Or do you not need documents for a new building on your site and you can build as you want? Thanks for your answer. Good luck. Hi Kristin.🍩
❤❤❤
Definitely want to buy a print, but can't afford one at the moment.
Could you fill that hole with rocks and expanding foam for now, and put a rug over the flooring?
Then you should keep you money, the prints are not going anywhere 😊
Yes I think I have to do something like that for now!
Dear Kalle, so sorry about the kitchen floor, I can totally sympathise, must have been a shock to discover this.
But .... no matter what you record and what your intentions are for your videos your editing is again such a treat!
Your works have a very special calming and soothing quality to them.
Thank you ⚘️
Oh bless you maybe you can caulk in between the slates until the spring when you can sort it properly or get a very big rug or carpet it. Xxx. Xxx
