As an Alaskan who watches the salmon migrate every year, I'm telling y'all do NOT want to eat those salmon. The only time you want to eat a salmon after they've changed colors is when they just start heading up the rivers, unless the migration to the spawning beds is really long and they can endure for a long time. The reason is that these fish start to deteriorate while they're alive because their immune system actually shuts down, so they become more susceptible to diseases and start to rot. Not only that, but they lose most of the good fats and other major nutritional value that makes them good eating due to the strenuous journey, to the point where bears will only catch them just to eat their eggs and brains since it's the only bits that are still nutritious. I also won't forget to mention that those are chum salmon, which many say is the least tasty of the pacific salmon and most people just smoke them or give them to their dogs to eat, which is where they get their other name from, "dog salmon", and they're especially popular amongst dog mushers way up North in Alaska. They're still edible, just not as good as the other four, although their eggs make for a popular caviar over in Japan called "Ikura". If you ever come to Alaska or can go anywhere else with salmon spawning streams, you can witness for yourself how gross the salmon get when they're about ready to spawn. Edit: for corrections

Even in their dying form? They don't have any fat/flavor. Plus their Bodies are releasing nutrients into the environment for nature in general as well as their eventual offspring.
@@ShenpaiWasTaken I do not disagree with that. Growing up on the Skagit river we fished all the time, if they had recently spawned go for it, it they are belly up & sideways let nature take its course. Stupide , do not take fish from a river that near of the road +as you can see they are in reverse of the flow it mean that those are old males salmon , in bad shape, and unhealthy .
Yes thank you I am Native from the Chinook tribe and we worship salmon. These are chum salmon and alot of people say they arent important because they dont taste as good as sockeye or king but they are extremely important to the ecosystem. My grandpa would give me lots of smoked chum he caught in the ocean. Very delicious.
I’ve seen this before actually up in Washington state. We actually went on a trail from Lake Washington, a small Creek as we went out but we found that salmon going. My sister thought the salmon or just put there on purpose, but the truth is now they lay their eggs in these little streams, and they die there. I also do you remember up in Alaska we have this creek that would connect from the lake and the sockeye salmon weed go either down or up the creek. It was a perfect fishing ground I’ll say.
Uhh.. they’ve always laid their eggs upstream. And being that’s the case it makes it a TERRIBLE fishing spot. They’re literally on a journey up river to spawn where they originally came from. Once they do that they die. If you went “fishing” at this spot, not only would you be subject to major fines and jail time but you’d be helping to decimate the salmon population.
I wouldn't be eating salmon toward the end of their spawnjng journey, but that's just me I guess. I was next-door neighbors with a tiny creek like this one where tons of salmon would spawn every year. They're exhausted and essentially torn to shreds by that point. Gross. Also, if you've lived near their spawning sites, youd know the smell is rank for ages after. If neither of those things are enough to put you off from eating them at that point, more power to you, I guess lol.

That’s the life cycle of a salmon. They die after laying eggs. These dying ones are not good for consumption, unless you are a bear. If you take care of nature, it will give back in abundance. There lots of conservation efforts and projects going on to give this kind of result. People need discipline and just can not keep taking from nature. I wish people in the world stops overfishing and learn a sustainable way.

@@paulcoenen7918 that's a stream of moving water, a small one, but still a stream. @@serfranklin6022 They die because salmon die after they spawn, genius. I used to live near a small creek where hundreds would pile up every year and die. That's what happens. Most people here don't understand that by the time they're at their spawning site, they're not usually fit for human consumption since they've worked themselves to death, literally. Go crack a book, maybe.
@David Munir Lol by the tike they make it that far they've gone through changes that makes them not very good for eating. That's why the bears aren't there feasting. They get them earlier in the journey when the meat and fat is still good.

@@benjaminjames9712 as an Alaskan who witnesses this every year, this is not false. They are spawning. Salmon die after they lay their eggs
Most likely they already spawned and are not moving for a reason, they die after they spawn. They are dying unfortunately. But for real, grab all you can, clean them and carefully wrap for the freezer or you can smoke them to, that’s SO delicious!!!
Even in their dying form? They don't have any fat/flavor.
Plus their Bodies are releasing nutrients into the environment for nature in general as well as their eventual offspring.

I do not disagree with that. Growing up on the Skagit river we fished all the time, if they had recently spawned go for it, it they are belly up & sideways let nature take its course. In person you can tell a good fish from one that’s starting it’s dying process.

Stop stop telling lies 😭😭😭
I wouldn't be eating salmon toward the end of their spawnjng journey, but that's just me I guess. I was next-door neighbors with a tiny creek like this one where tons of salmon would spawn every year. They're exhausted and essentially torn to shreds by that point. Gross.
Also, if you've lived near their spawning sites, youd know the smell is rank for ages after. If neither of those things are enough to put you off from eating them at that point, more power to you, I guess lol.

They are going to die . Better catch them and give them to people who can prepare and eat.

@@serfranklin6022
They die because salmon die after they spawn, genius. I used to live near a small creek where hundreds would pile up every year and die. That's what happens. Most people here don't understand that by the time they're at their spawning site, they're not usually fit for human consumption since they've worked themselves to death, literally. Go crack a book, maybe.
Dinner! What a great find!
@David Munir Lol by the tike they make it that far they've gone through changes that makes them not very good for eating. That's why the bears aren't there feasting. They get them earlier in the journey when the meat and fat is still good.
@@kinte1870that is false.
@David Munir You take one bite and get sick, these salmon are literally zombies and their flesh is decaying. You should look it up, its kinda scary honestly, they lose all sense of self and their only goal is to swim until they die
That wont taste good bro they dying
@@benjaminjames9712 as an Alaskan who witnesses this every year, this is not false. At most the only things the bears would be eating is the brains and eggs of those salmon, but once they get that far up the creek there's barely any nutritional value left in the flesh of the fish itself. This is common knowledge in my area amongst the fishermen and fish biologists.
