I think the best advice i got before I started uni (I’m a second year now) is that it is VERY NORMAL for it to take weeks or even months to make close friends. There is nothing wrong with just having nice acquaintances and spending time by yourself. Enjoy nice little chats and hang outs and with the time the close friends will come. Don’t expect it to happen straight away. Be patient
Thank you for this! I'm in my first week of college and I always find it hard to make new friends. I already talked to a few people but I don't push myself to constantly meet new people and feel unconfortable while doing that. So I'm taking my time and taking it easy so I don't feel stressed about it but that I'm also not isolated from the rest.
Completely agree. I’m second year now too. I commute to Uni so I knew making friends would be difficult anyway, but it wasn’t until after Christmas that i actually had a solid group of friends. It does take time and effort, but it definitely gets better.
Yes, I agree! I’m a second year too and I’m still making new friends till this day :) I’d say like really put yourself out there and make loads of acquaintances and then you can meet up with them more and see which people you vibe with the most and put a little more effort into those friendships :)
*You look so happy and excited Ruby! I'm glad you are having such joyful and exciting days. Also, I wish you to recover quickly and get a nice rest in order to keep enjoying this university adventure* 🎓✨ take care
I completely feel you. On my very first day it seemed that everyone else had formed their friend groups instantly, and I really hadn’t. I talked to some people but we never really followed up throughout the week. I was really worried because for some reason I thought it would happen pretty quickly and naturally. But now I’ve made some friends after reaching out and trying my best to be brave.
Ruby we are so proud of you, you are doing great. To all of you: it is okay to struggle, especially in the first few weeks. Everything is new, you have to live up to expectations and you may be away from your family for the first time. But there lies an adventure ahead and you are all ready to embark on it, I am sure of it!
When I started uni back in 2009 I was also very nervous and not sure whether I'd be able to make friends, especially as I didn't really get along well with many people back at school. But I found the first weeks of uni to be the time when it is easiest to make friends. It's not weird at all to walk up to someone and say "Hey, who are you?" or "What are you studying?" or "Where are you from?" because there are a whole bunch of strangers who don't know each other. You'll soon find yourself sitting next to certain people during lectures etc. and that way groups of friends will just form naturally. I found some of my very best friends during that time and even now, 5 years after graduation, we keep in touch and try to meet regularly :)
Hiya, I am a graduate student from Oxford and I was so sad to hear you didn't get into Oxford but very happy that you seem to be enjoying Exeter! So good that you shared your thoughts about making friends at uni, not so easy for everyone! Hope you will have an awesome time in Exeter and perhaps you'll come to Oxford for masters/DPhil! Good luck!
My friend group at the end of freshers week has stuck for the past year! I’m so so lucky in that respect, but a lot of people I know weren’t in stuck friend groups until the end of 3rd term, don’t worry about not making the best friends in freshers week as you will find your friends eventually!
I wrote a comment on the previous vid but you probably didn't see it but ty for being an inspiration to all of us I literally just stumbled across one of your vids and I'm so glad I did bc now I actually try to be productive instead of procrastinating all the time so thank you ❤
I am a junior and I would like to share some of my experience & tips on making friends , I think your mindset on this topic is absolutely fantastic. I was living abroad and moved back to my home country to join university so it was really difficult to make friends (since i didn’t know anyone), I was meeting a lot of people through classes, clubs, & a program for freshmen but what really helped me make friends was trying to find something common between me and the people I was meeting whether the fact that they also lived abroad or just common interests and the KEY is to stay in touch with the people you feel comfortable around , try to hangout with them or study with them and if you take a course or join the same club as them it will also be great , the most important thing is to never give up because meeting a lot of people means you will inevitably lose touch with most of them( workload/ busy schedule etc.) but the few who stick around are the REAL DEAL and after all friends are not about quantity it’s all about quality ( I just realized that this a super long comment but hopefully it might help someone who is going through freshman year❤️)
I heard a girl in my news writing class say something about Marvel/The Avengers (which I am interested in). I was nervous at first because I don’t do things like this, but I approached her after class and talked to her about it! Now we’re pretty good friends :)
That’s so cool :D I’m happy for you. I wish I could get a best friend for life but that’s a bit unrealistic... cause like nowadays people have hundreds of ‘friends’ but which one of them will be there for you in tough times? Maybe that’s what family is for Idk but I’d really love to have a friend as close as family
You have no idea how much I enjoy these! Also, I just wanted to let you know that you don’t have to feel like you have to tell us when your hair is frizzy because it really is not noticeable at all, and everyone gets frizzy hair sometimes. That’s absolutely nothing to “apologize” for!!! ❤️❤️ Also, feel better soon! Oh, and I’m so glad that you’ve found your friend group! I only have around one friend in high school now, and I’m hoping that eventually when I go to university, I’ll be able to find a group of friends. :) I’m just really bad at socializing and get all awkward.
*you are My biggest inspiration and role model, thank you so much. Today I told my dad what I wanted to study and where, I have always loved studying but I love it even more because of you, I’m so glad Ruby. You are my favourite studying buddy^^. Ilysm*
University is the ground of starting your future life, you slowly make friends through clubs/organizations or projects or even classes you take, you learn things on your own, you start to make connections and that is key because after uni you either go onto more school (such as grad.) or work and you want a lot of background on yourself in applying into future things as that. Also, it makes a person more well-rounded instead of how people protray uni as just being buried under books and studying. Enjoy every step of uni because time will fly fast.
My own university days are long since gone, but I just wanted to let you know how much I've been enjoying seeing the experience through your eyes. I'm glad you're meeting so many lovely people and I hope your classes will be everything you hope for!
For the Harry Potter society, do you get sorted into houses? Do you get to choose which house you want to be in? I wish there had been one when I went to university.
I'm really glad you're settling in and enjoying university, you seem to be making friends quite easily which is fab! You also seem really relaxed! I'm really enjoying your uni vlogs, nice of you to share the next stage of your life with your viewers!
Thank you so so so much for vlogging your first week at uni, Ruby!! I´m about to start my course next week and am already wayyy too excited. I really don´t know what I´d do without your videos, they are helping me a lot! You seem to be so happy with your new life :)
I honestly feel like I'm reliving my university experience through your vlogs! 😂 I was part of VegSoc last year and also loved Harry Potter society- I miss the firehouse (and their vegan pizzas!) so much!!
I'm absolutely loving your university series! Thank you for talking about making friends, because honestly, that's one of the things I'm afraid of finding difficult once I get to uni. Lots of love from Maltaaaaa!
Ruby, i am literally loving your university blogs, thanks so much for taking the time every day to upload for us! its something i always look forward too. Just wondering how your videos will be after these first 2 weeks and what sort of stuff you will be posting when you are more busy? (p.s I've been loving ur thumbnail styles recently)
Ruby - Did you get your meningitis vaccine? It's so important to protect yourself when attending University. I work at a University and students have been in scary situations with falling ill xxx
friendship groups change a lot in your first year of university! honestly its surprising if you're still friends with the people you met in your first week by the end of that year! but I'm still best friends with my group but a lot of people left the group over the first year! (im ending my third year in 2 months)
Ruby, I think you make some great points! Especially if you have a small number of people in a course you are in, you can really connect through discussions. The biggest effort is the after class, trying to push the conversation beyond class time!
I'm loving these videos so much!! I just moved to a student accommodation in Liverpool, not to study sadly, just for an internship, and it's so interesting to see how you get on in your dorm and to be able to relate to you so much. Looking forward to the rest of the vlogs
Dear Ruby, I just wanted to thank you for making videos. I don’t think you know how much of an impact you’re making on a fellow Hermione-Granger-obsessed, study fanatic, organization freak book worm, as myself. I never comment, but I’ve been watching your videos almost every single day, and I’m extremely grateful for that! And I just though to let you know, thank you!
hi ruby, I loved this video so much, vlogs are my favourite videos you do, I hope you feel better soon. it's so good you're having an amazing time in university and that you've made so many kind friends. have an amazing time in university!!! :)
*Ruby, I’m commuting to University everyday and I’m finding it so hard to make friends! I feel like I will literally have no friends in a few weeks :(*
I am sure that you will find friends eventually and that they will be the very best! Some things take time, and finding like-minded people may be one of them! Just don’t give up too quickly! Continue with your effort in finding friends and you will succeed! There are lots of other people desperate to find friends themselves, so you just have to find each other:)
I really love how you did your hair! I also decided a few months ago to listen to some Matilda songs because I heard you mention it in one of your videos and it's really good! The pinboard looks amazing.
Love you so much Ruby👑 Thanks to you I have had the nerve to join a club, Club Maximus✨ We basically learn Latin and I’ve already made 4 new friends ✨💕🍁
Dear Ruby, Seeing the part were you put up the pictures on the board made me tear up. I sincerely wish you the best of luck with everything. It's also a pleaser to accompany you through your uni journey! Can't wait for your next videos xo
i'm finishing my masters program and i can honestly say uni was the best part of my life, i'm sure you'll have a blast at yours too, just take your own advice and try not to worry too much about things^^
After uni starts it will be a phase where it seems perfect and you can find friends but probably after a semester it change but that is totally normal. Cause you will find friends and getting to the point where you enjoy it really :)
Love your pin board and your bed! Literally my dream 😍 I’m a junior and I do find it quite hard to make friends at uni. At first people ‘warmed up’ so quickly that I couldn’t catch up, so I started isolating myself from them to avoid awkwardness, and eventually I have no good friends 😞 I have a lot of classes with people from my department, so it’s not like I can always meet new people in new classes. I really regret being so introverted and shy in the beginning, rather than being more open. Now everyone has their own clique and it’s nearly impossible to fit in.
Oh I remember my frist day at uni last year. I couldn't find anything, had lunch all by myself and thought it would be like that all the time. Now I have a great group of freinds and we hang out a lot :)
Ruby, I would love to see how you take your reading notes! I'm taking an awfully hard history course, and realizing I basically need to re-vamp my whole note-taking system.
I know a lot of people say your friendship group changes loads from freshers and for a lot of people that is the case, but my friendship group was fully formed by the Thursday of freshers and tomorrow I will start living with them for the second year in a row! So just go with it Ruby, you'll be fine!! x x
I LOVED how you said mail and then were like "oops post..... American." lol I'm American but I love your videos! I graduated from Uni a while ago but I hope you make the most of it! It looks like your off to a great start, getting involved in different clubs/societies is the best way to make friends! Also, feel better soon!
Yes, please do an extra video about how to make friends. I am not a student, but anything about this topic would help. I am pretty alone since about 10 years, and would love to have some friends. Because of mental illness it´s still very hard for me. But you inspire me a lot, and I would love to hear your thoughts about it, and how you do it. Thank you for making so much kind, honest and posivie videos. You are helping a lot.
Hi Ruby! I've been following you for at least a year now, and I'm actually the same age and experiencing my first weeks in university too (sorry, college :) - I live in the US, and when you corrected yourself to say "post" that made me laugh)! It's so fun to watch someone who I admire going through the same experiences, which are surprisingly quite similar even though you live so far away from me. College is so exciting and new and sometimes scary, but we've got this!
I'm sooo jealous because I don't live on campus (my uni is only a 30 minute drive away from home, so it's just not worth it right now). It must be so nice to live independently from your parents.
I love how involved you’re getting! Definitely the right attitude although i understand why people find it hard. Would be good if you came back to the friends topic in a few weeks! Things will change as you get to know people more
When making friends at uni, this is what I’ve learned: It’s actually really easy to meet new people and make friends, deceptively so. The first time you work this out is absolutely terrifying but once you’ve done it and hopefully have a new friend it’s like you’ve unlocked “The Secret”
hi ruby! I would love a video on what you eat! I always struggle with making my own food and bringing lunch instead of going out and getting fast food cause most of the time I just end up getting fast food.
Actually the friends I made at "freshers week", are still some of my best friends 15 years later 😁 so sometimes, the group of friends do not change that much 😊
Ruby!!! I LOVE MATILDA THE MUSICAL. This is the only musical I was able to see on West End. And I know that it's my favourite. Seeing it was one of the best experiences in my life and then a year later I was so fortunate to see it again! My Matildas were Lara McDonnell and Emily-May Stephenson :D I hope I can see it once again... :)
I think the best advice i got before I started uni (I’m a second year now) is that it is VERY NORMAL for it to take weeks or even months to make close friends. Thank you for reuploading I was watching the video and it just cut off 😩😂❤️
I'm in the middle of a long and difficult school day and this video was the PERFECT break. Thank you, Ruby!
Ruby you look so happy in this video which makes me happy! So glad you're enjoying your first few weeks at uni!

Good work for overcoming that worry! Now you can train your mind to realize there is nothing to worry about and they can lead to great things!
That’s so cool :D I’m happy for you. Hey can you do an updated note taking system!! 4:18
Of course :)
I don’t think I’ll ever get over how adorable she is

For the Harry Potter society, do you get sorted into houses? Do you get to choose which house you want to be in? I wish there had been one when I went to university.
I'm so glad you're meeting people! (And that there was a Harry Potter event, just for you!)

I started Exeter this year and am struggling with friends and finding people. This video was very much needed - Thankyou 💖
Lovely to see how much you enjoy your time there. Now I can't wait to go to university. 😍

I’m with you on food typically for babies haha - Farley’s rusks are beauuutiful!
The HP banquet looks absolutely perrrfect!!!
I am glad you are doing so well!
I'm sooo jealous because I don't live on campus (my uni is only a 30 minute drive away from home, so it's just not worth it right now). It must be so nice to live independently from your parents.
I always enjoy your video. Your always productive in everything you do
I love the university vlogs so much! 💜💖💚
AHHH I wish we had Harry Potter society at my university!!! that would be so fun, I'm jealous! So glad to see you're having quite a good time
I love how involved you’re getting! Definitely the right attitude although i understand why people find it hard. Would be good if you came back to the friends topic in a few weeks! Things will change as you get to know people more
That's so cool they have a Harry Potter thing there. I'd be nice to have something beatle-related at whatever college I end up going to lol.
Is anyone else obsessed with her intro ❤️❤️❤️
When making friends at uni, this is what I’ve learned:
It’s actually really easy to meet new people and make friends, deceptively so.
I was not emotionally prepared for Hedwig's Theme to start playing 😂💛
Could you please do a video on how you take your notes! 💛
You should try out The Cauldron Inn in Gandy Street, it's Harry Potter themed and it's really interesting! X
Thank you for the recommendation :) x
The Rabbit Vegan Cafe is amazing too, and quite affordable :)
Ruby: How can anyone not like Harry Potter !
Me: I KNOW RIGHT!!
So glad you've made friends already! Also, don't worry about being ill in the first week. Fresher's flu gets everyone!
Actually the friends I made at "freshers week", are still some of my best friends 15 years later 😁 so sometimes, the group of friends do not change that much 😊
God I just got finished with a real firey debate and it’s left me sooooo wound up.
This video was just what I needed to chill me out. Thank you.
Ruby!!! I LOVE MATILDA THE MUSICAL. This is the only musical I was able to see on West End. And I know that it's my favourite. Seeing it was one of the best experiences in my life and then a year later I was so fortunate to see it again! My Matildas were Lara McDonnell and Emily-May Stephenson :D
I hope I can see it once again... :)
I love your room at university!! Can you upload a note take with me? I think that would be a great video, I enjoy watching you while doing homework!❤️
