- Mixing FOH for THE ROSE at Lollapalooza festival BRAZIL 2023
POV video of mixing live FOH for The Rose at Lollapalooza Festival Brazil 2023. Explaining each of the mix moves I'm making as I go through the song. I thought id share this one as a few things go wrong during the song/mix so it was pretty interesting to share and show how I dealt with those.
Mixing on an Allen & Heath D-live system. The console is a Cti-1500 and the stage box was a CDM32 which I was travelling with the whole tour and flying between each show.

If you can keep up that way of mixing for an entire show, you are the hardest working F.O.H. engineer I have seen in 30 years.
This is one of the easier songs in the set… haha
There’s some where I’m constantly moving and pushing stuff.
Thanks for the kind words 🙏
Tbh I feel that a console is an instrument too, I'm tired the standard those days is laziness. This is great
@@RattlinBonesClub On second thought, I might do as many things as you while mixing, but I don‘t have to do it on such a tiny desk, so I don‘t have to jump around on different layers all the time and so it looks less impressive 😎😜
Nah man that’s just how you’re supposed to mix a show🎉
This person is obv a good engineer but you must know some bad engineers if they're not doing this sort of stuff.
It's almost like your FOH mixing is an art form. Fading in and out and emphasizing what's
important.
Thanks 🙏
almost???? that is a insult, Live mixing is a serious art form, essentially the guy on the board is trying to recreate studio session on the fly with only 1 take and custom tailored sound for maxiuim impact to the venue all in 1 take and little to no room for errors. ., . . unfortontetly for most people they have no idea the ammount work , skill and talent that goes into it,
Spoken like somebody who has no clue of what they're talkin about.
@@mikeriverajr4447Unfortontet indeed
Funny seeing you here ;)
It would be such a luxury to have an FOH like this paying such close attention to your live sound to the point he's basically mixing live. Our gigs usually involve a guy watching his phone while we play!
I feel your pain. We're lucky if the engineer even notices that the bassist has a problem, or the vocal reverb is missing, luckier still if he does something about it!
Jaded house techs vs band FOH mixers or upstart house techs. I've been both, I won't lie.
The machine moving the knobs automatically is so satisfying
amazing work, and well done on the recovery of both the mute and the bass issues. I love it when the mix is 'active' and not just hanging around monitoring!
Thanks! yeah always gotta be involved in the mix and keeping the energy moving with the songs!
I always cry a little inside thinking about the fact that probably less than 1% in the audience actually hears these 'mistakes'.
and here I thought I was overworking myself, what a great performance, it was literally a performance.
🙏
The first thing I realized when I started doing FOH 5 years ago is to never, ever listen to the people who say "just make it ok and don't ever touch it" - no. It's *live*. If you want to do a really good job you have to constantly adjust. Yes it can be scary, of course. This is exactly how to do it!!!
Thanks! Yeah you’ve gotta keep the mix alive!
that's what my bosses always tell me. and the people around me that have never touched a foh mixer
nice work! This is the way. Constant realization then adjust then listen then adjust then realization then mild panic then adjust. It’s constant controlled chaos!! ❤🎉
Thanks 🙏
Certainly a performance in itself. Wow!
Thanks 🙏
When I became familiar with live mixing 20 years ago and realized how much it takes, I've ALWAYS if at all possible thanked the sound guys and the mixing engineer for great show as well.
Many don't realize how much these guys do for the sound of the band.
I love how the audience react to this instrumentalist behind them
Wow, as an artist it would be an absolute honour to work with a F.O.H Engineer like you. Unfortunately this kind of skill and work ethic during mixes is very very rare to find. Thank you for doing a great job! (:
Thank you very much!
As someone running a venue these days and doing live sound for over a decade, it's extremely rare that i get a FOH engineer in that doesn't have this kind of involvement. If you pay no attention to your artist on stage, don't do vocal fx on a track to track basis or don't know the song, it's very hard to compete with the myriad of techs that do. They exist, the no effort guys, but they are usually tied to a band (friends/family) or working a job while edging on a burn out, mixing an external band that doesn't value paying their own FOH.
It's not rare at all. It's pretty Standard today.
Its not rare, its expensive!
finally some down to earth live mixing, as a sound engineer who dabbles in F.o.h mixing aswell its great to see!
Thanks 🙏
When I first saw the thumbnail I thought you were doing an entire festival show on the A&H SQ-5, and I was very confused. Then I saw the D-Live badge and everything made sense! 😂
haha yeah Dlive C1500, easy to fly around the world!
I’ve mixed festivals on an SQ-5 and it’s worked great lol
Great job! Well executed and articulated. Im fucking loving these positive comments. Go on man!
This is such a great reminder of how much fun mixing can be. Nice job!
this is FASCINATING
Thanks for watching 🙏🙏
I can see that you mix like an actual artist, and has an amazing comunication with the band! Nice job man
Thank you!
It is very good to see how you do them live.
Thanks a lot.
Thanks for watching!
As a musician who has played on stage many times.....I can tell you the best thing to see (or know is happening)from stage is the sound guy riding the console throughout the show and actively engaged and immersed in the set. Bravo to you sir! A band can be amazing but they will not translate to a crowd with a bad sound guy. They are the unsung heroes for these venues. When you leave a show completely blown away.....the sound guy should be partially credited for that. Cheers!!
🙏
As a current music performance and production student at college, it’s amazing to see this and how people mix live from behind the desk, as when I’m playing shows I know there’s mixing going on and I know how it’s done, but it’s awesome to see a perspective from the mixing foh engineer themselves. Great video - I learned that you can tap a tempo for a delay live, I thought some are pre recorded but nice to see you do it manually
This is fascinating, I’ve been to tons of shows and never knew this was happening like this - thanks for posting!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow! 😍
Love this hell yah
A FOH engineer that actually mixes! Refreshing. Not just relying on 87 waves plugins for a 32 input band.
I typically produce Hip Hop and R&B, but I've toured with Metal and Rock bands and have always held high respect for FOH and lighting mixers who put in hard work.
Really appreciate what you're doing here! Never know that Live Music can be such complex and crucial things especially for FOH the artist really depends on you. Great vids keep it up!
This is one of the most amazing videos I've ever watched!!! I seriously could watch these for hours, and the amount of education content like this provides is amazing! Keep up the good work boss! This is one sub here you can know is going to keep coming back!
This looks so much fun (and intense--hence it is fun)!
Looks like so much fun. I highly respect that!
Fantastic work, reall attention to detail and cool as a breeze, well done mate!
Thank you 🙏
Very interesting to see. Thanks!
Such a cool breakdown
loved it thx buddy
Thanks 🙏
just wow - thank you for this POV video explanation!
That's cool, Never knew there was so much in it.
nice, thanks for the inside view
Love it! Magic!
If I ever get in a band big enough, you bet you're the guy I'm calling to do the mix. That's some level of professionalism and art, absolute art that makes a musician wanna work with you. Keep up the good work brother
🙏
Thanks for sharing
Wow, nice to see you in some serious live action! I already love your bthelick channel, but this is really something! 😊
So cool, thank you!
Thanks 🙏
Awesome video and content. Cheers!
Woww nice!! like this content so much
God bless you working on that postage stamp of a console. I feel like i’m out of faders on the s7000 surface.
just wow...
Very good job, I've seen too many sound guys either just set the levels and sit there or go for a smoke. But you really actively work the song and bring out the best of it.
Thanks 🙏
That dLive system is an absolute beast of a bang-for-the-buck fly rig.
It’s great!
As a band i GREATLY appreciate this and this is definitely an art form in itself. Thanks for all your hard work you guys do. Keep it UP!
What?? Such a big festival and such a small board? wow! Kudos.
I fly this one with me everywhere so I have the same mix. Once you get the file set up over the layers it’s pretty easy to work around the limited faders
This board is worth like 5x X32s...With CDM32 stagebox you can buy 10 X32 mixers
This is absolutely awesome, welcome to the world of a live audio engineer, if the sitting back chilling behind the mix, then YOU are doing it wrong :-) Great video. Thank you
Thanks 🙏
Ive stood next to the sound booth at so many shows, sounds awful and the sound guy just be chilling like it sounds great. Nice to see someone who actually wants the sound to be good!
Thanks 🙏
Crazy such a small mixer for the full mix!! I remember until very recently it was 3 times that size
Great video. Loved this.
Thanks for watching 🙏
great worrk!
Fantastic video, learned a lot and love the honesty - as others have said seeing that the pros make the odd mistake is very reassuring, and I learned a lot from how you dealt with them!
Thanks! 🙏
Would be interested seeing your vocal chain on the dLive!
Sure, ill try and film a video of this when im back on the dlive in a few weeks!
This is crazy to see, because you never notice all of this happening when you're in the audience, but it makes a lot of sense that it's happening. Impressive stuff!
Thanks!
This makes me feel better about that one time I got a corporate gig doing the sound for a talk and got some funny looks for riding the faders cutting mics in and out when people stopped speaking. It was only a 3x3mtr room and I was sat at the back on a table. I was impressed the gov managed to sell a sound rig hire for the thing. xD
This is insane. I had no idea the amount of work that goes into FOH
You should not have to work this hard. This is neither cool nor a style to emulate. Extremely amateur approach.
@@ParkerEdwardsParties Parker has done some great weddings, he knows what he's talking about.
@@Steven_Williams_ lmao nailed it
@@Steven_Williams_ The fact that your response to someone saying that this is amateur is to call them amateur tells me everything I need to know about your experience in the field.
@@examplewastaken For sure, the fact that his response to someone saying that this is amateur is to call them amateur tells me everything I need to know about his experience in the field.
This is such a cool perspective! Hell yeah!
Thanks 🙏
good job! pleasant to have another member of the team play with its instruments ot make an even greater experience. keep it up
Wow! Just stumbled on here from music production videos in the studio. I never realised that this amount of work went into live show but from what I'm reading in the comments you seem to be very good at what you do! You really do have probably the most intense job in the show, one slip and you're in the sh*t as they say!
Thanks 🙏 yeah it’s intense but it’s very fast moving and any mistakes can quickly be recovered and forgotten haha
Wow
Mesmerizing work! Congrats!
Thanks for watching! 🙏
Best in the biz James! ❤
Pete Daynesssss the best of the best and my favourite of all. 😘
neat! love the walkthrough
Thanks mate 🙏
Great video!
Thanks 🙏
I wasn't expecting such a small board :)
It comes in at 23kg in the case so I can fly it everywhere on planes as a regular luggage bag. And is still the same processing power as the bigger versions, you just have to get the layout of the layers arranged in a way that works well for the small size
This is so awesome! Big ups to u sir an I appreciate the vids. Keep em coming!
Thanks! Will do! 🙏
This is badass! Glad this popped up on my feed. I love the camera angle and narration. Definitely gonna check out more videos. I think live audio is way more challenging than people assume. What camera are you using?
This is filmed with a go pro hero 11
It's a field I'm interested in. Thank you for your kind explanation
It's an interesting video
Please explain about this song
The song is good
As a DJ/Producer. Thank you for your service. o7
🔥
This is a lot of work on a small unit . Brilliant work friend. . Work with what you have. Note that you learnt the music so you could mix
Thanks a lot! I’m loving the little unit!
This feels like doing a theater show, jeez!
Is that the guys from "The Rose" u mixing for? Great job putting out videos like this to educate people on the amount of work we sound guys put in behind the scenes that has a huge contribution towards the success of any show.
Indeed it is a band called the Rose, Korean rock group.
Thanks!
Nice, very good. I'm from Brasil
Great show
Unreal!
Thanks 🙏
Wauw 👏👏👏
More content like this 👏
So this is what watching someone who's a master of their craft is like
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
great job
Thanks!
Whoa…whoa…whoa….buddy. Listen, this already has my blood pressure boiling because you’re too damn good. So, you’re def out-classing me out the box. But you know what irks me? What picks at me? Your complete and utter regard for throwing correctly timed FX out there? Now you’re playing with 🔥 my friend. No band deserves this much good fortune! 😂😂😂 Awesome job dude
😅😅😅 haha thanks 🙏
I’m confused by the tap? Can the band hear the tap? Is that distracting?
@@robskifun1110 No it’s just used by the mixer as a metronome so it can figure out the BPM’s tempo of the song, so the FX delay and reverb echo goes out in proper time/tempo. Otherwise your FX timing will clash all over the place like galloping horses or shoes in a dryer *sorry that’s how I learned the terms as a young kid DJ* 😂
"yup nailed it" haha
Incredible 😮🔥
Thanks! 🙏
FOH engineer is the unseen final member of the band/act
I've done a bit of live sound engineering at pubs and tiny venues, but the way you work the desk as a constant performance is mind blowing. You really have to know the songs inside-out. Don't you wish you had everything laid out on a separate channel though instead of having to switch through different layouts?
Yeah it would be easier on a bigger version of the console but for these fly in and out shows this is perfect. And once I’ve got the layers laid out how I want then it works really well
@@RattlinBonesClub Yeah you're certainly fast and those modern consoles are so compact and powerful.
Fuck me. I play in a pub band (4 piece). We just plug in, get a decent monitor sound, then leave the rest up to the venue. Must be great for the fans to have someone dedicated to fixing the live mix for the audience.
🤘
MORE POV MIX LIKE THIS!
Coming soon!
I've seen you use your desk more in this 3 minutes than I've seen some do in a day and that is great! That is what mixing should be! Or it means your a bad engineer or it is a bad band. Don't know, I am a lighttech. But I think it is good what you are doing
hahaha
This is so true he put more into that one song than I’ve seen any in an entire night! Great job. What an art form and skill
❤supercool
Inspiring
Thanks 🙏
I’d love doing this as a job! One day!
a joy to see the real pro!
Tip of the hat for the unknown heros.
I do recording engineering but one of my buddies does front of house and it seems like such a stressful job. Learning the x32 board doesn’t seem to be that hard, but keeping up with it live and being able to trust your ears the whole time is something I’m not confident enough to do. Would stress me out to no end.
Live is an entirely different beast to studio work. The pressure is really on...
I’m not sure where all these people work but in my experience you will never be a foh unless you work this hard.
