To fake them out. The hitter assumes it’s gonna be a fastball, but for the pitcher it’s usually a easy strikeout because you can catch them off guard

@@ogcorpse in the case where they are losing a lot sometimes teams will bring in position players, like a first baseman or something to pitch, to save their bullpen pitchers arms for a more competitive game, the position players having no experience pitching will pitch slowly. Although saw said sometimes pitchers will do it to fake the batter out
