Excellent, I could hear the difference very well and liked the better clarity with the MixCubes. I can only imagine how much you'll learn and get better over time using this little box.

Hi Todd, let me be straight forward, your mix to my ears sounds nearly equal with / without the mixcube. I think it is more a matter of further developing your ears and mixing experience over time to fully unfold the potential of a single-woofer monitor. I also had good experiences with regularly changing the volume from super low to "normal" listening volume and back and applying the 600-3700 Hz midband filter (12 Hz slope) from time to time. Those are the most directional frequencies where the money of your track lies. So yes, even with a true mono speaker it makes sense to further narrow your listening frequencies from time to time. Another choice would be the 338 Hz low pass (12 Hz slope) filter to assess the weight of bass vs kick and also to produce bass and kick. It is often easier to find a baseline that locks in with the kick and I more often than not end up with a baseline that is simpler than before as there is only so much space in the low end. With this lowpass filter trick the mix cube really gives you confidence in the low end without having to add a sub. This filter setting also helps to find the best high pass frequency and slope for midrange instruments like piano, guitars, strings and synths. A sub would give you the frequencies that you would not hear but feel. But those frequencies you can time-control nicely with cableguys timeshaper, kickstarter 2 and multiband dynamics like the Softube Weiss dynamic plugins or Farbfilter Pro MB (remember to prefer linear phase MB). With this speaker you can mix a mastering-ready track. Thank you for the video and the effort !

It sounds totally different from my Adams.

My well broken-in BX5's could not discern an appreciable difference between the mixes, or more likely my ears are well past the ability to pick up finer nuances but Todd, "Should Have Stayed" is a mesmerizing song. One of your best! Happy mixing my friend.

It is most obvious in the first part before the vocals. I actually mixed it more aggressively with the equalization at first but the next morning I decided to ease into it. Not having used the MixCube before, I wasn't sure if I was overcompensating or not, so I still trusted my instincts listening back with the HS80Ms. I will have more time to experiment in the future.
I'm glad you liked the song! I think I will make a couple changes in the arrangement, maybe changing the chords a bit for the verse and varying the drums some. It's been a fun song to work on and also one of my favorite projects in awhile.
I like the BX5's a lot! Great choice!

I could hear the difference with my MacBook speakers. Train your brain to hear for certain things, there’s lots of ear training software out there now

Almost like your mix became louder and had more clarity with the mix cube

Agreed! And with this being my first mix on it, I was leaning on the side of being more mild with my adjustments so I wasn't risking going overboard. At first, I actually made the mix with the mixcube a little louder than it is here, with a little more emphasis on some of the mid-high and mid-low frequencies, but the next morning I felt it might be risky sharing as a first mix without yet hearing how it will translate on other speakers. Once I have some time away from this song and more experience with the mix cube, I will do another mix to see how it compares.

Hello, it sounded much better with the mixcubes! What did you change on your mix more exactly?

How did you connect with your Apollo? Can you link the cable please?

I have an external monitor controller that I connected to. Without the controller, I would connected it to the Apollo with a balanced 1/4 input cable into one of the 6 line outputs on the Apollo. Then you need to go into audio preferences in your DAW software and make sure the output you chose is enabled and set to mono in the output configuration. Once that is set up, you can use the master output in your DAW to toggle between your main monitor outputs and the mono channel you set up for the MixCube.

@@ToddAudio Thanks Todd. Therefore you would use a stereo stereo balanced cable; on the one hand you connect it to the Avantone and on the other to one of the mono outputs of the Apollo. The problem is that the Apollo outputs are mono. Using a stereo cable doesn't seem the best, despite the fact that there is a Mono button in the Console. There would be the possibility of using a Y: 2 mono + 1 mono cable. In all cases, could you link the address of the cable you are talking about, for further confirmation? thank you

@Luca D'Orazio A balanced cable is not always used for stereo outputs and inputs, but it is the same type of cable. As long as your Apollo has balanced outputs, using a balanced cable is best to help prevent ground noise, since the MixCube also has a balanced input. (I think all Apollo models have balanced outputs, but if yours is a different model you might want to check the specs to confirm.) My preference is balanced TRS to XLR, but balanced TRS to TRS (1/4 double ring on both sides) will also work.
