You're getting close to having a place to sit and make airplane noises! I feel pretty lucky now that I got delayed in my build by house renovations and backordered parts. I haven't set a single rivet yet so I can replace parts as required with only redoing the prep work. I can't even imagine all the feels of looking at all the red 'REPLACE' boxes on the part updates and then looking over at the completed tail and wings...I really feel for those of you who are in this situation.
At 10:01 he’s doing precise engineering drawings for exact measurements, at 10:10 he’s firing up the grinder. Something just cracked me up about that! Looking great Ryan. Loving the videos!
@@RyanFlysPDX Great oped about the laser cut parts. My empennage kit is being crated right now. I may have a chance to push back. Fingers crossed for you!
Ryan, you’re proving to be the “gold standard” amongst YT build videos. Love how you switch from time lapse to real time with appropriate narrations overlaid where necessary. Your attention to detail, not only with the build, but with your video editing makes it exceptionally useful. I’ll be starting a -14A soon (awaiting crating, but likely delayed while they work through the laser issue), and these videos motivate and inspire. I can’t wait to get started! Keep up the AWESOME work!!
It’s a labor of love, for sure, but we’ll worth it when I get fantastic feedback like this. Thank you! And how exciting, a 14 on the way. It’s such a terrific experience. Van’s promised frustration, and they don’t disappoint (😉), but what an amazing project this is! Keep in touch and up to date on the 14.
I'm just one video behind you. keep it up Ryan. my garage is at 106 deg and losing weight at the same time I'm working on my RV7. thanks for your videos.
I wish I was loosing weight!! Though 106 is no joke. I’m at a tepid 95 today, with the garage likely staying well below that. Stay hydrated! I’m sure folks have noticed my reliance on La Croix, Liquid Death, and Polar to keep me moving!
Another awesome video Ryan! Good call on the crotch strap brackets too. I went with the Crow harnesses with cam locks and they are sweet. I would not recommend Crow’s latching type because they are super confusing to first-time passengers. My friend has this type in his RV7A. The cam lock system is just intuitively simple. Also, if you plan to install an auto pilot which I HIGHLY recommend don’t waste your time and money installing the Vans manual aileron trim (bias springs and safety wire). Unfortunately, I wasn’t smart enough to figure out I would never touch that manual trim while flying. I’m at 60 hours now on my 7 and loving it! I like watching your videos because I just can’t believe I actually did all that too! You will be there in no time.
Thanks for the compliment!! I’ve heard to stay away from the latch style for that same reason! Aesthetically and functionally, I’m definitely looking at the camlock. Autopilot will be installed, but I went with electronic trim. Perhaps this is unneeded? Sounds like I have yet more research to do!
If you are referring to the electric elevator trim, it’s awesome! I really don’t remember if there was an electric aileron trim option. But, with an auto pilot servo connected to your aileron push rods, separate aileron trim may not be necessary. Definitely do some research on that. The manual aileron trim for me wasn’t necessary at all (in hind sight) and took a lot of time to install.
Ryan, love your videos. I’m hoping you aren’t affected by the laser cut part issue. Just wanted you and your viewers to be aware of the censorship on vansairforce. People with photos and real concerns are being blocked. Many polite posts with personal experiences are also censored.
I'm certainly affected-we will see to what degree. Very eager to start putting together a plan on what is required to-above all else-ensure the safety and integrity of my airframe, but also retain resale and prevent unnecessary future maintenance. I've heard of the censorship. I won't wade too far into those waters. I myself haven't had anything removed, and there is certainly an abundance of conversation on the forum. I would hope that those with legitimate concerns are being allowed to be heard. I do also appreciate the need of a moderator to keep conversations civil.
Love the video. Your work and methodology are tru A and P. As to the parts issues any time aluminum parts are laser cut it must be performed in a T-0 or annealed state and then re annealed prior to forming. Laser cutting tempered aluminum sends the T rating on the edges and around the holes through the roof so when any forming is performed after WILL introduce micro fractures. I really hope the issue is properly addressed and everyone who may have this issue can be properly compensated
Thank you for the high compliment! The road ahead is rough, for sure. I’m anticipating a lot of rework. I’m sadly expecting to pay dearly when it comes time to sell my plane too. Calling the issues devastating isn’t an overstatement, I don’t believe.
Keep your chin up. All is not lost. Just be very careful. Structural issues in aviation can be deadly. I’m an old A and P, if you have any questions feel free to ask
Thank you for the offer! There’s rarely a “partial” structure failure in an aircraft isn’t there. Seems the word “failure” is most often found next to “catastrophic.” We’ll make sure this thing is airworthy and not going to provide a (shortened) lifetime of issues.
I wish, man. I couldn’t make it this year. I’m already trying to put a plan together for next year. See if I can secure either a plane, a ride, or fly commercial and then get accommodations accordingly.
No! Vans has addressed the known kit issues and is shipping kits that won’t required waiting on solutions or exchanging parts. There will always be a chance of service bulletins in the future, but from what we know currently, all kits being shipped are ready to build and fly. 🙂
Could you please write what the dimensions of the table that you use are and if there is a any construction manual for building the table? My brother and I are at the beginning of the building process.
I can do one better! The EAA has plans for these tables, and I’ve build mine both to these exact specifications. www.eaa.org/eaa/aircraft-building/builderresources/while-youre-building/building-articles/tools-and-workshop/worktables And on that note, if you are just getting started I highly recommend digging into everything the EAA has to offer if you haven’t already. They’re one of the most important tools in the box!
@@RyanFlysPDX Thank you! Will do, its frustrating when you just want to start and you can not rely on the quality of the parts and you don't know, if the parts must be replaced later in the building process. Its not only the additional labor, but also the expensive transportation costs and customs (at least 19%), which I have to pay for every package they send me.
Boy, I hear you. I’m very fortunate to be a short drive from the factory. Plenty of practice kits and asking questions can hopefully keep those replacement parts to a minimum!
This is when the build starts getting fun and it really starts looking like an airplane. I enjoy the videos. It keeps me building.
Thanks man, I enjoy the feedback!
It is starting to take shape, and it is wonderful to look at!

Yeah, I purchased the electric option in both elevator and aileron. Add it to the list of things to look into… ☺️
