Recommend not investing in this almost at all early game, It’s nice to get a free player to train a bit and sell, but that random element really does one no favours in terms of building the squad, That is Until you get (and should prioritise) the manager skill which lets you choose between two (and three when upgraded again) potentials. At this point, you should funnel as much available cash and glory here (and remember to activate the perk). From here, it’s a dirt cheap backup player at worse, that you can sell in 12 months time, or at best, someone who can fill a team hole and be a long term investment.
The requirement for glory points to improve is the biggest hindrance in the game. If you aren't winning you can't gain glory, if you don't have glory you can't buy better players or get better coaches to improve your team
