  • Since its inception in the mid 80’s, the Toyota 4Runner has become a staple in the offroad community. Its combination of reliability and capability both on and off road has amassed a large following through the years from weekend warriors to hardcore offroaders. In this episode, we take an in-depth look at Kelly Lund’s 2017 4Runner, better known as the 5th Gen. Kelly is an avid offroader, and probably spends more time in the driver's seat or rooftop tent than he does at his home. Kelly has already racked up 100,000 miles on the rig in just 3 years, traveling all over the western United States and even down in Baja. The rig was also featured at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas back in 2018. Kelly has built the 4Runner to be able to camp just about anywhere, setup quickly, and be a home away from home for him and his co-pilot Loki.

    Thank you thank you thank you to this guy for not saying I’m running this I’m running that before every single piece of gear he talks about like every other overlander doing a rig rundown. This 4runner is beautiful! What a beast of an overlanding rig. 4runners are truely one of if not the best platform for overlanding. Big enough to deck it out with a bunch of storage and cargo options yet small and nimble enough to fit through the tightest trails and sketchy narrow mountainside shelf roads, all the aftermarket mod options, and of course the bulletproof reliability which is the main best selling point for me personally. After all these years my 4runner has had zero problems and it’s taken me all across and all over this beautiful country numerous times and also being a great comfortable daily driver compared to other off road style suvs and trucks. It’s the most versatile and a great balance of everything.

    Great build! Kudos to the owner, well thought out with everything having a purpose all while trying to be as minimalist as possible.

    I really like that style of roof-top tent and it is very rarely talked about but you can point your rig into the wind so that the material on the side of the tent doesn't flap as much.

    Really liked this vid. The host asked meaningful & interesting questions. The T4R owner has a purpose for each mod and uses all of them. Not just on there for the “cool factor”. Fav T4R video I’ve seen in quite some time!

    🙋🏻‍♂️ been running a Magnuson supercharger for over 80,000 miles. ZERO issues. I live in the mountains and all and can pass even on the uphill pass roads at 75-80 on 33s with no regear and really minimal effort. Magnuson doesn’t change the reliability of the engine at all….. I will say that.

    Great to see more on Kelly’s truck! 👍🏻 I’m slowly getting there, slowly. Do you know what size his Pro Eagle Jack is? The 1.5? Great video, can’t wait to see more.

    Just out of curiosity what kind of rear hatch hydraulics does he use? I also have a C4 ladder on my 5th gen (also Red FTW!) and the stocks always fall down a little. I can see his opened with ease and I would totally love that too. I use a bar to keep my trunk open to prevent the hatch from falling. I also run x2 2-gallon Rota Pax attached using C4's attachment to the ladder and boy when they are filled it's a work out lifting up the trunk. I would just like to know what after market hatch hydraulics on his his rig. Beautiful though!

    A newbie here...How can I inquire with Kelly if his C4 rock sliders are painted or powder coated (I think painted?) and where did he get the "TRD" text cutout done? C4's website states they don't paint or powder coat their unit when it ships, hence the question. Thanks!

    • @ocn_eats
      @ocn_eats  3 года назад

      Thanks for watching. I reached out to Kelly on this, he had them powder coated out here in the Denver area after they shipped. The TRD plates were also done by C4 as well.

    What’s the info on the PRO EAGLE jack carrier?

    • @ocn_eats
      @ocn_eats  3 года назад

      Hey John, the Pro Eagle is mounted to the bumper by a Pro Eagle mount, then bolted straight through. Kelly had to remove the C4 jerry can holder and bought a single jerry can holder from a company called AT Overland. Really nice jack, does add quite a bit of weight.

    • @ocn_eats

      Hey Peter, always a bit tough to get near an exact cost, but this one is probably north of 25k.

    At 11:30 how’s that RAM holding up off roading?

    • @ocn_eats
      @ocn_eats  3 года назад

      Hey Carl, he's racked up quite a few miles on it already, and most of those are pretty hard miles. That being said, I'd say the RAM is holding up pretty well. Not the first guy we've featured on here to have one, so they're a pretty durable product.

    You never see this much gear on a jeep or a ford...thats because the owners deep down inside know those cars only last for 100k. ONLY toyota owners invest this much time and money knowing their rig will last 500,000k. This is why we pay for the quality and dont care about 5 speed and MPG!
