This was such a great submarine warfare simulation. I used to try to dive as deeply as possible when attacked by destroyers. Then I saw on an episode of "War and Remembrance (1988)" that, if the destroyers were on to your depth, a valid tactic to throw them off-target was to actually go to a lower depth, like periscope depth (without putting the periscope up of course) because then the destroyers, thinking you'd still be a much deeper, would waste their depth charges, them going off much deeper below you. It didn't always work but you could always try.
The games by MicroProse were pure quality back then. So many classics: Silent Service, Pirates!, Gunship, Airborne Ranger and so on... . And they also were great later on the Amiga an PC. They even developed the great UFO - Enemy Unknown. I miss a company like MicroProse, or other companies which created simulations like Aces Of The Deep or SWOTL and so on. The good simulations and strategy games back then always were complex but not too complicated. Today you almost always only have simulations which are too complicated or superficial games that are purely action-orientated. Good old days.
Agreed, they were one of the greatest back then. Also loved the copy protection, which was always in-character: in Gunship you had to answer with the correct counter call-signs after returning from a mission and trying to land on a friendly base. In Project: Stealth Fighter it was easier because you just had to identify the correct type of craft or vehicle. After playing it countless times, I had learned all the craft and vehicles by heart. Who says you can't learn from videogames? I wondered what would happen if you got the password wrong when returning to base in Gunship. Got insta-killed or rather shot down but at least they were kind enough to award me the Purple Heart (plus I survived). In Pirates! getting the Silver Train or Treasure Fleet data wrong, insured you ended up as a beggar or rogue upon retiring, which you were forced to do pretty soon because of bad health. And you ended up a sad and bitter man...
@@AudieHolland In Airborne Ranger, you had to know American medals of honor In Pirates, you had to know when Treasure Fleets/Silver Trains were going to be at specific locations. Not knowing made all countries sending bounty hunters after you, and very few people wanting to join your party.
Not exactly the most elegant submarine tactics, but thanks so much anyway for this longplay. Most videos about this awesome game are just showing the stupid training mission where you sink 4 immobile ships off Midway.
as much as i honor your other videos, i can't even watch you play silent service. running surface full speed into a japanese destroyer letting him damage you (for nothing), wasting how much torpedoes on him? i used to dive, let the destroyer circle around me and shoot him while doing so. Usually this cost me 1 torpedo only. W.G.S.C.
I played this game for ages... and I think you wasted far too many torpedoes and played with rather easy rules with low difficulty. 😉 I preferred areas with a higher likelihood for tankers and transport ships. 😉
One of the first C64 games I played as a young kid. It's incredible to look at this today.

Used to stay up til dawn playing this.
I played this A LOT as a kid... even without manual managed somehow. Fun memories.
This and Questron were the first games I played as a kid. Been gaming since. 44 y/o
always destroyed the destroyers with torpedos. Than surfaced and attacked cargo ships with the deck gun, to save torpedos.

Used to love this when I was little. Had no idea it was a Sid Meier game, though!
Very good sub-simulation. Excellent work done on graphics and the game keeps you busy for a long while.
Wow. This has been one of my favorites since the NES version, but I never knew that this was yet another Sid Meier project!! :-)
i miss those years the variety of games that came out of that time from people like microprose was incredible
oh man wie bin ich darin versunken und hab katz und maus mit den zerstörern gespielt . das hat so nen spass gemacht
“The Computer Warrior” had a comic strip based around this.
I loved this game...
Where part where have hide from destroyer , and the depth charges. That's what always killed me..

Please play Up Periscope! I couldn't find single video about it on RUclips.
I remember this game being much better than this, somehow.
