Wow! some really big cuts there J and indeed fingers crossed something else will pop up in the right spot! 🤞😊 Plus awesome "cuttings" they've really taken off good, looking forward to their process 👍😊💖
Now that's a pruning! It should look good this summer. Looks like your bonsai are doing well over the winter and before we know it, spring will be here!
Hi Raine, I'm sure it would if it's not under stress. You could try keeping it in darkness, with just a few hours of daylight and about half the amount of water you would normally give it for a few weeks. When you see flower buds starting to form you can bring it back out with your other plants for regular periods of light and waterings. A poinsettia is very similar for flowering.
The pruning process is so therapeutic. Even just watching you do it is very cool. I've always wondered how you make a good canopy on a bonsai. The amazing part about the bonsai culture is how you can change the shape and feel of the tree. Glad I got connected with you. I gave your channel a shout out on my most recent video. Appreciate you brother.
That you so much Titus, you are one kind genuine guy and I appreciate you too ! Yes it is very therapeutic even for myself to work on the trees or even just sitting around them and studying them. It relaxes me in a similar way fishing does for me.
Just found your channel today! I am interested in what you will do with the lemon cypress! I am very new to bonsai keeping and was given a small lemon cypress bush in December. I am also glad to find another Canadian - how do you keep your bonsai alive in winter? I don’t think the -30°C last week here in Calgary is going to work! LOL! Do you have a good year-round indoor bonsai recommendation (ficus, jade, this kalanchoe, something flowering)?
Hello and welcome ! Yes your lemon cypress will not like -30 lol. I keep mine inside under fluorescent lights, well draining soil and dont let the soil get dry for too long. I usually water as soon as the surface is dry, right now with being inside it's usually every second - 3rd day. In the summertime I found it best to keep them out of the hot afternoon sun, so a bright place where it's going to get morning sun or late afternoon / evening sun. In the summer I usually water everyday. Yes you are right, a ficus, jade, Kalanchoe or Fukien Tea plants / trees are great to start with and very forgiving. I hope this helps and I hope you update me sometime of how they are doing!
bonsai J Thank you for the reply and encouragement! I have a very good outdoor spot in mind come summer for the lemon cypress thanks to your tips! I also have a commercially grown Chinese juniper that I didn’t realize was an outdoor plant 😖 because it was sold as an indoor one. 🙄 I have to figure out how to keep it alive in the winter without killing it - maybe bury the pot and burlap the plant? I haven’t posted about my bonsai adventure on my Instagram yet, but I will be if you’d like to see progress - it’s the same username as here. Next will be locating a bonsai seller (there don’t seem to be any here) to find an actual indoor plant (Fukien Tea maybe 🤷🏼♀️).
You could over winter your hardy trees in an unheated garage or shed, just checking them once in a while to make sure they're not drying out. If you can't find a nursery you could keep your eye out in Walmart as that's where I found my fukien tea 3 years ago or in other box stores with outdoor centers. Just make sure to repot them after you purchase as the potting media is usually not great.
bonsai J Walmart!? I will definitely be checking there! Who knew!? 😆 I am currently waiting for a few things to come in the mail including some bonsai soil, three new “not-quite-intermediate-but-better-than-beginner” tools, and some wire. Once these arrive I’ll look more earnestly for an indoor plant. Thanks again!
Hello, It is popular as a house plant here but wouldn't survive our winters outside. Does this plant grow in nature there in any area's do you know ? I did cut it back hard but it is already starting some new growth thankfully.
