Curved Front End Table 4 - Fitting Doors, Curved & Veneered Drawer

  • In this episode, I cut the curved door panels to size using the bending form I used to create them. Then I cut the veneer for the edge banding, and install it on the doors to give the illusion that they are a solid bent panel. Then install the hinges and hang them.
    After the doors are hung, I can start working on the curved drawer front. I cut the face of the curve on a large blank and them create the half blind dovetails for the sides. I then veneer the face of the drawer front so that the grain flows though the doors in to the drawer, then finish making the drawer
    As always, I welcome your questions and comments!

    Guy - beautiful fit on the door panels. There are so many great builders on you tube, but your projects stand " Head and Shoulders above the Rest" what I consider Fine Furniture. Another great example is coming together nicely. Thanks as always for sharing your incredible skills.

    Enjoyable episode Guy. Your veneer work is very nice, and that's a great touch wrapping the grain along the top of the doors.
    Love the furnace ;-) Or how about when your wife enters the workshop as you're filming - I now lock the door when the camera is running.

    • @GuysShop
      @GuysShop  8 лет назад

      +Marty Backe Thanks Marty! Yeah, wrapping the grain came out pretty well, but the veneer was so weak, it did crack when the iron hit it and dried it out. I had to cut a little sliver and glue it in.
      The darn furnace and air handler are within 6-8 ft of wherever I set the camera, and it always turns on as soon as I get the shot setup and start taping. My wife know now to poke her head in first. I wish I had a dedicated shop. Oh well, you make do with what you have, right?

I am selling books and donating as much as I can to Hospice and using some to live on. I am also building a website devoted to selling books and tools so when I am able to I will be converting sandhill woodworks to do that. When it gets warmer I want to start looking for the wood to build a new Moravian Style work bench and see where it goes from there.

    The connection between the back and the sides of the drawer should be made with through dovetails.

  • @jeremieasselin5453
    @jeremieasselin5453 8 лет назад

    Good job Guy, I like the way you work, it's very meticulous and it looks like it gives some nice accurate result. Have you thought about the movement relationship between the solid wood drawer and the veneer ? Do you think the drawer is narrow enough that it won't affect the veneer ? Cheers !

    • @GuysShop
      @GuysShop  8 лет назад +1

      +Jérémie Asselin Thanks Jeremie. Yes, I gave a lot of thought to it. I have added veneer faces to drawers many times in the past, although they have been much thicker at 1/8" or thicker. This veneer is 1/42", so there is a chance it will crack as the wood expands into the summer months. I am counting on the fact that is is going to be in a climate controlled room in my house, and the seasonal movement will not be to great. Only time will tell really. Great question, and thanks for watching!

    Hi Guy, thanks for posting these videos. I'm learning so much from your posts.
    When I'm making things (which I need to do as time allows) I often feel a bit rushed and make mistakes because of that. How long (roughly) did you take to build this ? Thank you and all the best

  • @reforzar
    @reforzar 8 лет назад

    Great job, it's looking great. Any particular reason you didn't dovetail the back of the drawer too?

    • @GuysShop
      @GuysShop  8 лет назад

      +Brian Prusa Thanks Brian! Over the years I have made hundreds of drawers. And not one of them has a dovetailed back. Why? I can't really answer that. I just find it easier and probably just as strong using the dado in the sides. Just the way I have always done it. Thanks for watching!

  • @dennydebner3278
    @dennydebner3278 7 лет назад

    Your work is wonderfully professional! I was watching how you made the drawer, to see if you use metal sliders. You placed wood pieces as guides in the base area of the drawer. Was the bottom panel of the drawer notched to allow for the guides to fit the bottom panel? Thank you for your reply.

    • @GuysShop
      @GuysShop  7 лет назад

      Thanks Denny! Nope, there are no use of metal sliders on this project. Just wooden runners.

    • @dennydebner3278
      @dennydebner3278 7 лет назад

      How did you make the runner guides so there was alignment as the drawer moves in and out? Thank you.

  • @markme4441
    @markme4441 8 лет назад

    very nice attention to detail Guy, one question can you cross grain veneer on the drawer front to thick solid like that ? I've heard max thickness of veneer should be 1/16 assuming that is to be completely saturated and a part of the glue. I was wondering about stave core with 1/4" solid/veneer running in same direction (of course it would move to much in your application )

    • @GuysShop
      @GuysShop  8 лет назад

      +Mark Me Thanks Mark. I don't think there is an issue with the cross grain of the veneer. The veneer is only 1/42" of an inch thick, and the cold press glue does not suffer from the creep that regular PVA glue would have. The shape of the drawer front and the fact that is a lamination should help prevent warping. There is a chance that the front will expand. Based on the other pieces in my house (controlled environment) which I have carefully monitored the expansion/contraction of for many years, my confidence is very high that there will not be an issue.

  • @stevecollins9450
    @stevecollins9450 8 лет назад

    Fantastic video, Guy. Does the veneer saw eliminate all the tear out? If you would have made the doors out of a solid piece like the drawer front, what would you say the % chance that they would warp?

    • @GuysShop
      @GuysShop  8 лет назад

      +Steve Collins Thanks Steve. The veneer acts exactly like, well, wood. So the saw can tear out during a crosscut since it's very fragile. Ripping is not really an issue. I actually toyed with the idea of coopering the door at one point (like staves in a barrel) and decided this was the way I would go.
